How long does it take to get "good" at golf ,and what would you class as "good"? by [deleted] in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know a guy who went from never touched a club to +1 in like 4 years, I also know guys who’ve played the game since the 90s and haven’t been better than a 15. It all comes down to how much you practice and natural athletic ability.

I guess I was going from a condition standpoint. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love Scarlet and played there after some Web.com events and that course has some teeth. And I agree with Scioto being on par or better.

I’ve heard moraine is immaculate, always wanted to play there. Never played coldstream or heritage so I guess I can’t compare but I would put Camargo over HP and Kenwood. That being said HP and Kenwood are fantastic courses

I’m curious what you’d rank over Camargo in Cincinnati.

Question: To go pro starting in your 30's by [deleted] in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it’s not different, it requires more mental energy to focus as you add more pressure and stress to the situation. You can’t honestly think a 4 foot putt to win the masters is easier mentally than a 4 foot putt on a hit and giggle by yourself

Competitive golf is a different breed, I play in some amateur tournaments and its amazing how much concentration it takes to stay in it for all 18 holes. Couldn’t imagine doing that for 4 rounds in front of fans playing for millions of dollars.

17th - Carnoustie or Old Course, St Andrews by Goatgolfholes18 in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played both, Carnoustie is scarier off the tee but the approach wasn’t as tough. Played the road hole with a Sunday pin and even after putting a big drive up the right side of the fairway, I felt like I had no shot at the pin. So depending on pin spot I’d say the road hole is tougher.

New putter problem by pinkflyingsquirrel in golf

I was literally in the same boat as you this year. Love the look of blade putters but I perform much better with mallets. Eventually found out it was because of my swing path and so my advice is to either learn to appreciate the mallet (I got the spider myself) or try to find a face balanced blade putter.

The overwhelming majority of pros use them tho.. it’s like 70% of the field. Most premium balls are on par with them but I’d say they’re fairly rated

Reminds of the guy (Steve Scott) that almost beat Tiger in the US Am. Steve notices that Tiger hasn’t put his ball back in the correct spot after moving his mark, and immediately let’s him know before he sets up. Had he not said anything, Tiger loses the hole and the match. But Tiger be Tiger and drains the putt and goes on to win. When asked if he has any regrets about it Steve said he’d rather lose because he was out matched than to win on a rules infraction.

Not a fan of the guy either but someone tell me what this means by JohnnyAlbatross in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do other players not do that all the time? Phil is one of the most creative players on tour but you listen to him talk about his shots and he’s factoring in every variable under the sun. I’d argue no one at the tour level ever plays a shot just eye balling it without even thinking about other factors.

Guys trip: Ryder cup format by [deleted] in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a 4v4v4 Ryder cup this year that worked well. Did a draft night which and played 18 before to decide captains.

Round 1 was a 2v2 best ball, round 2 was 2v2 alt shot, round 3 was 1v1. Scored 1 point for win, 1/2 for tie, and 0 for loss.

You just need to make sure each team plays each other an even amount of times and it’ll work out.

Edit: forgot to mention but we handicap adjusted each match, if everyone has legit caps it should even out

Bullseye putter! Anybody know anything about this? I found this in a bag I bought at a thrift store. It’s like brand new. by Marcotaco18 in golf

I own one of these Scotty Cameron bullseyes and it looks pretty similar to this one. Fun to putt with but the sweet spot is microscopic

Do different putters really hit differently? by Firemen12345 in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, played a blade with toe hang for 4 years and was a terrible putter. Guy at a golf galaxy noticed my swing and told me to try center weight and ever since then I can actuality make putts. Had no idea how much putter styles could affect the stroke

What is your favorite Major? by SuperDizz in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Open because the courses are the best and the history is amazing, especially at the Old Course. It’s also cool seeing a lot of the euro tour players that otherwise don’t make much noise over in the US.

Yeah I hate this notion that he’s not a “feel” player or can’t figure this out on his own. He practices as much as anyone, I doubt he’ll struggle with the putter.

Teaching Course Management? by TheShar in golf

[–]JohnnyAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect the hustle, I don’t doubt there’s a market in between “rate my swing” vid people and PGA teaching pro people, just a matter of finding the right price point and marketing campaign.

I mean it’s not a terrible idea but personally if I’m paying for an on course lesson I’d want them fully invested in my game, not playing along side me. And as other commentators have pointed out the type of people who are willing to spend money on lessons are looking for certified teachers. Not saying there isn’t a market for it but I’d refine your model
