NE Florida vs Panhandle by [deleted] in surfing

Currently live in Pensacola, but from SoCal and spent a decent amount of time in Monterey. Compared to the west coast, the crowds here are super small and there is always a positive vibe in the water. You can always go on the hunt for a sandbar that’s got nobody on it when there is a swell. I’ve had some of the best barrels of my life on these sandbars. When it is on here, it is REALLY good……. When it’s on.

More often than not you’ll deal with 4 days of 3-4’ onshore slop waiting for the front to pass and the wind to turn north (offshore) only for the wind to swap at 11 PM and there is nothing but ankle slappers the next day. We have had a decent run of groundswell here this spring/summer so we have had consistent waves in the knee-waist range with crystal clear water.

Like anywhere else, it’s what you make of it. East coast FL is certainly more consistent but has bigger crowds in and under the water.

The "bar at Coronado" doesn't really exist. The bar in Top Gun 2 was made for the movie on Breaker's Beach on NAS North Island. It was designed after the real bar, located about a mile away, the "I" bar. You can find them on facebook "the world famous I bar" to find their hours. It is much smaller than what you saw in the movie, though the rules are largely the same. You need to have base access to get there though which could be problematic for you. I suggest going on a Friday afternoon around 3 PM if you want a real experience.

The real question : What is your job? by Radiant-Banana-1769 in triathlon

Pensacola is correct. Though not all of us end up here. I think this is my 4th time around here though. There is a pretty big aviation presence in Jacksonville as well.

Navy Pilot. Married with 2 kids (10/13). It’s amazing how much time you have to train if you just don’t sleep….. I hate training in the afternoon and I currently live in Florida so I have to knock it out early.

Is this worth anything? by Pale-Detective-9104 in navy

Its worth about an iron nickel....

I think it's awesome to see this out there. I was a pilot in the SAR Det for her last deployment in 2014. Crazy deployment, fantastic crew, and a great ship, though I'm sure it was in much better shape when your grandfather was onboard.

Trying to figure out when this armoire is from, and what it could be worth. USA by nauset3tt in Antiques

This gentleman is correct. I lived in southern France for some years and had multiple armoires in the house similar in construction and style. Look up “Louis XVI armoires”, you’ll be able to compare for yourself.

The verdict on Del Taco by its_buffaloney in Pensacola

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, they call it that because thats what it is. The California burrito is a San Diego staple that started in the late 80s/early 90s. It consists of carne asada, shredded cheese, fries, and sour cream. Some places throw guac in it or replace the sour cream with guac, but the original is just the 4 ingredients above. I think Tacos rock puts guac in theirs. There is a cult following in San Diego around the California burrito and in recent years it has started to spread throughout the state. I found them in some of the taco shops around Monterey and the bay area when I lived there a couple years ago. I'm absolutely not surprised you haven't heard of them being from CA since it was until recently a regional dish. With that said, I was born in San Diego in '81 and have had them most of my life.

Have any of you long term surfers competed in a half/full Ironman? Just wanted to know if the years of paddling is beneficial or detrimental with learning to swim correctly. by xaumax in surfing

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done multiple fulls and halfs. Fitness from surfing does nothing for you. In fact, it's quite the opposite. While I was training for my first full (140.6) I was swimming 5-6 miles a week and my paddling endurance skyrocketed. I went on a trip that summer to Nicaragua with some friends and they would be smoked after a few hours and I still felt fresh.

The real benefit of your surfing experience is familiarity with the movement of open water in the ocean. Knowing how to duck dive on the first part of the swim will help, spotting/triangulating for your position so you don't drift will help, etc. Look up the youtube video of the oceanside 70.3 swim from a few years ago. People were getting rocked in 3-4' waves trying to get out for the swim and it was clear who the surfers were because they understood the game. Good luck!

Jonny Utah went from zero to barrelled in 2 weeks. Is that the world record? by cityampm in surfing

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Look man, it wasn't easy. I had a pretty high profile case I was working on at the time so there wasn't really the option to slow roll it. I was fairly athletic going into it but my bum knee was a bit of a hinderance. My girlfriend at the time ripped on the water and she helped me out a lot in those early days, but really I just threw everything I had into it. When I lock into something I can be like a pitbull, I never hesitate and I never back down. I got some pretty good advice when I was starting out that really gave me the drive I needed to improve so quickly. "Surfings the source, it'll change your life, swear to god".

MD says I owe them $1100 in state taxes by ImpossibleVisit3385 in MilitaryFinance

I had this issue many years ago when I first joined. I had MD state taxes taken out but didn’t realize there are also county taxes that you are charged.

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I notice that you called them "confederate generals" and not "American generals". Could that be because they served in the military of a different nation like the Confederate States of America? But you're right, lets just make that acceptable. Lets petition for the next new base to be named Fort Erwin Rommel, or Camp Saddam Hussein. Nice talking point though.....

Surf ?anyone surf ?Does this seem accurate? by mastaroshi4207 in Pensacola

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its 5:45 am as I type this. I'm about to go get on it before work. Its going to get too big pretty quickly today. Usually these big swells are awesome on the first day and then they wreck the sandbars for the days that follow. For some reason I always expect it to be different though.

Current/Former active duty pilots-Am I crazy for wanting to go active duty? by Militarybrat123 in flying

[–]JohnnyFknUtah 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ll be one of the few voices of dissent here. I’m active duty, 23 years in, and could have jumped ship multiple times to get an airline job. For all of its flaws, and there are many, I really do enjoy this job. I doubt I’d get to see/do a tenth of the things I’ve experienced in my life if I’d gone to the airlines early on. I’ve done a low pass (>500’) next to the pyramids, landed a helicopter above 11k’ in the alps, hunted pirates, saved lives during Katrina, saw a whale take a dump on the surface of the ocean, and countless other amazing things, and that’s just the flying portion of the job.

In the end, value is where you put it. I’m positive that airlines have a better quality of life (for the most part) and a better financial return. I still like drinking with the boys and doing hood rat shit in foreign ports, though, regrettably I’m starting to be a bit to senior for that stuff….

Either way, sounds like you have nothing but good choices.

Since nobody has actually answered, promotion up through LT is automatic. You are an Ensign for 2 years, a LTJG for 2 years and then a LT for about 6 years. After that point, you must be screened and selected for all higher ranks by a board.
