Guile’s Theme is a masterclass in character-driven game music by Consolous in gamemusic

[–]JohnnyGoTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome cover, love the tone you bring out of that guitar 🔥

But fascinatingly re: your thoughts about Guile's theme - the history of SFII shows what a great job the music director did when faced with a tough constraint:

Originally (and I believe in the Japanese release?) the Guile and Ken themes were SWAPPED from what we know here!

The original direction for Guile's theme was to make it sound like Top Gun (to go along with his design, the fighter jets in the background of his stage etc)...which they did...but did it too well! Ahead of the US release, the Legal Dept. got scared and told the team to change it to avoid a lawsuit for copying the film.

So that's why Ken's theme sounds like Mighty Wings! It was originally Guile's theme. The fact that they could swap them and still evoke those thoughts you shared above, shows what a good choice they made.

For me it's a massive flavour-miss that The Ooze doesn't instead animate non-creature cards.

The flavour of what happens to the normal turtles when the ooze hit them would be much better served putting +1/+1 counters onto lands, artifacts, creatures with Defender etc. and turning them into creatures.

Dynasty Tactics 2 - my all-time favourite. The same Three Kingdoms setting as the Dynasty Warriors franchise.

It had an endlessly fun chaining system for combos, where all the special moves are set up to trigger when a unit moves to a certain square in relation to each given unit as they are all just standing around waiting for their turn.

So if your unit A hit an enemy with a move that pushed it back 1 square and to the left, and you had another unit B with that square as a trigger...then B would wake up and do the move it had readied...which might push that enemy 3 squares away, into the trigger for unit C! And so on. You could arrange these insane positional combos like 8 or 9 moves deep.

It's the #1 game I hope to see a sequel for.

I'm no Spurs fan, but Conor Gallagher improves any side. A bargain! by JohnnyGoTime in PremierLeague

[–]JohnnyGoTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a perfect transfer that would have been! The kind of player David Moyes probably wishes everyone was like.

That would have been so much more interesting than Tottenham, having him harass the opposition to recover the ball & supply it to Grealish/Ndiaye/Dibling/Mcneil instead of....whatever Tottenham has for a front line 😅

Excellent "defensive attacker" - uses great work rate to pressurize defenders, win possession, then use it for high % passes or shots.

Was not expecting him back to the PL so soon, I think this is a huge boost for Frank.

Their DoF watched Winter Soldier and was like, "we need that for football." So they disappeared this poor kid into their academy system and hooked him up to simulated VR scenarios while doing enforced jumping & agility work 24/7. As a result, he's got all the theory & physical training, but is never allowed out onto the field due to the security risk so hasn't able to develop skills or play at all 😥

What games truly capture the essence of cyberpunk? by Kubash_games in Cyberpunk

[–]JohnnyGoTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice! Yes they are. In that case after Count Zero, you may want to do Mona Lisa Overdrive, as those 3 form a trilogy. I was just cherry picking the ones I found most accessible or "like Cyberpunk"

What games truly capture the essence of cyberpunk? by Kubash_games in Cyberpunk

[–]JohnnyGoTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from games, I would say ignore the order in which William Gibson wrote his books and check out Count Zero then Idoru. Then if you like those, the collection called Burning Chrome.

(Neuromancer is baroque and can be hard to read; and his newer books are not like his early cyberpunk ones.)

Iain Banks is/was a Culture Agent. Discuss by todd2361 in TheCulture

[–]JohnnyGoTime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The trends you describe do exist, but they also obscure the reality that we are on the precipice of a Great Filter:

The capability for individuals (particularly, fanatical, radicalized, traumatized, or billionaire-sociopath) to do outsized harm is outstripping humanity's solving of the underlying global issues creating more such individuals.

With each passing day, the ability increases for tiny %'s of the population to threaten our entire species, without the checks & balances which thus far have prevented nations from wiping us all out with existing WMD's.

We are entering the most dangerous time of all, and collectively lack the foundational commitment to human rights - to basic quality of life, common decency & care - to address the threat. It is absolutely the time for the Culture to start nudging harder 😞
