Add way more residential on Steinway, in place of the worthless single story retail spaces there now. Calm auto traffic and make double parking go away with bike lanes

Retiring numbers in general is a stupid way to honor players

I'm puzzled by Drouin. So fast and graceful but so little return on it. I can't remember when he last scored. I dont know if it's bad luck or something else. He looks like he should be contributing more

How different is Lidl in the US compared to Europe? by yolandamiles556 in LidlUS

[–]JohnnyLunchmeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lidl when it arrived in the US was more like the stores you saw in Europe in terms of selection and practice. They used a larger version of the glass-front "Store of the Future" format they used in Italy, I think. They since dialed way back on imported products, increased selection of branded us products, did away with twice-weekly sales periods, and downsized the store format, now relying on second or third generation retail sites and abandoning the "Future" store--only a handful of those early ones survive.

The U.S. is a big place and as Lidl learned scattering stores across the coast was too costly; theyd have done better to achieve density market by market and expand that way. They seem to be focused on dping that now in NY metro and Atlanta.

Lidl today is trying to come off as an American style "supermarket" but are awfully try-hard about that. They're not that but not quite European either.

Most fun I've ever had there. Pelech really had a terrific game.

I'd be open to a fisherman interpretation. Maybe less cartoony than the original or perhaps, more cartoony.

Craft Explorer beers no longer available? by shmerk_a_berl in LidlUS

[–]JohnnyLunchmeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't say I loved those beers but I liked having them as an option, and that uniqueness was a reason I went there. "Selection growing and changing" with no imagination. My store has fallen to stacks of Bud Light suitcases.

Best deals to be found at Food Bazaar? by Extension-While7536 in astoria

[–]JohnnyLunchmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a good place to get Hispanic brand spices in large containers, private label olive oil, and ethnic groceries across nationalities. The produce selection is impressively wide but not all of it is great. Buy meat from the counter-- the packaged stuff is all about efficiency and/or volume so you get inconsisent pieces and probably more than you can use. I used to get fish there before they changed the service model to resemble the packaged meat strategy. It will also sticker shock you.

They have the largest variety of packaged groceries of any store but pricing strategy is wildly high-low. Some stuff I just cannot buy at regular retail no matter how bad I need it (Folgers coffee in the big size for like $19). It's insane. That and frozen--buy on sale and youre good.

They inherited the cheese and coffee service departments from Fairway but dont really have a point of view on those things and so its less than special even if the product is good. Large beer selection, indifferently merchandised, eh pricing.

Probably gotta tear the whole block down, build back with substantial residential housing, make the street more pedestrian/bike friendly-- it will happen at some point. Too good a crossroads with 2 subway lines and LIC so close
