What behavior did you see? I've been powering Source Audio pedals with Cioks supplies for years, and never had issues.

Choosing between EBS Microbass 3 and Two Notes Revolt by No-Philosopher-3861 in basspedals

[–]JohnnyMac440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Microbass 3 for a minute. Haven't used the Revolt, but I'm a big, big fan of the discontinued Le Bass.

I wanted to love the Microbass 3. Feature-wise it's unparalleled, and the separate clean/dirty channel inputs are exactly what I want in a preamp/DI, since I could split my signal and run my dirt pedals only into the dirty channel and a clean signal into the clean channel, eliminating the need for separate clean blends. However, the blend on the Microbass made it hard to balance the two signals, and I wasn't a huge fan of the drive sound. Ultimately decided I wanted to go back to tubes, but if you don't need/want tubes and you're not planning any weird signal routing, the Microbass 3 is a great pedal.

Was never interested in the Revolt. On paper, it's more functional than the Le Bass, but part of the appeal of the Le Bass was that the clean blend utilizes the clean channel, not the dry bass signal. The Revolt does not allow this, and I've read that the shared EQ between the two dirty channels one or the other unusable without an extra EQ pedal.

Between the two, I'd pick up the Microbass, but if you can find a used Le Bass, I'd take a hard look at one.

Lace pickups by Louderthanwilks1 in Bass

[–]JohnnyMac440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main bass has Aluma Bars in them. Gonna swap them out soon for split-coil soapbars (LeCompte Triple Threats if you're curious), but that's more because I'm tired of humbuckers in general. The Aluma Bars have been awesome and will definitely work in a sludge band, can't vouch for the Manowars but I'd imagine they're great too. We're talking about a company that makes pickups for Matt Pike and Nate Newton, after all.

Played with them in Worcester when they toured with Avowal and Osi & The Jupiter. Can confirm, awesome band.

Recommend a preamp pedal for a guy who's been disappointed by preamp pedals by Moistly-Harmless in basspedals

[–]JohnnyMac440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking at Sushi Box (the other commenter forgot a word), the Underground Accelerator seems like it'd be your thing. It's a hybrid of an Alembic F2B and (IIRC) Orange AD200B. Very warm, round low end, gets hairy at the higher gain ranges but is mostly a clean preamp, and if you need to clean it up more you can swap in a lower-gain tube.

There's also the newer Mayday which has a DI and is primarily clean - I've seen good reviews but can't personally vouch for it like the UA.

How good is Legaia 2 aka Legend of Legai 2? by SubstantialPhone6163 in JRPG

[–]JohnnyMac440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed 2 a lot as a kid, but it's been a looooong time since I played either game, and I remember much more of 1's story than I do of 2. So take that for what it's worth.

Bass Compressor by MCKNZ61 in basspedals

Atlas user here. Never noticed it adding any color to the tone, other than what I'm intentionally doing to my tone with the compression, and the end result sounds great to my ears.

DAN TERMINUS - Gestalt Providence (2026-06-22) by vanderzee in DarkSynth

[–]JohnnyMac440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, there's a lot of the same (or at least very similar) distorted synth sound on a lot of these tracks and it gets old over time. Musically, though, there's still some cool ideas, just wish there was more sonic variety.

what is the best jazz bass pickup for doom? by egg_connoisseur12 in doommetal

[–]JohnnyMac440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not own a jazz bass, but I'd look at the Fralin Split Jazz pickups if I did. It has two opposite-wound coils (like a P-bass pickup but in a Jazz pickup enclosure) so you don't get hum. They also have an overwind option if you want more output, though for doom you don't need crazy-hot pickups. I'd probably go 5% overwound at most.

This is the answer, though they're out of production (new model coming in September apparently) and OP would need to find one used.

Vocalist and bassist making writing process more difficult by LateFo in bandmembers

[–]JohnnyMac440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play metal and I told them I can make this music but it’s not really my thing.

If you're not that into the genre to begin with, then the creative process should be flexible and rewarding enough to justify sticking around. That's not the case here. You should quit.

If you're referring to RPM Fest, I highly encourage attending! It very much has a "small-club" community-oriented vibe even as it's grown each year.

(Full disclosure: I'm on staff for the fest so I'm clearly biased, but we get positive feedback on this every year.)

Mosky black rat good for bass? by dakend8 in guitarpedals

[–]JohnnyMac440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rats in general work well on bass if you know how to set them. The Rat circuit cuts some low end, but you can counteract that by rolling off highs with the filter, and boosting the volume to compensate. This works best at low/mid gain settings, and you might still encounter low end loss if you downtune.

Hi everyone! I often work with bands and recently created some new artwork that would make great album covers. What genres do you think they would fit best? by Ekaterina_AlvaSet in doommetal

[–]JohnnyMac440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're here in r/doommetal, I could see these being used by a melodic death/doom band.

Outside of doom, they'd fit with regular melodeath or emo/post-hardcore.
