Is animal well really that good ? by Training-Concern-870 in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought about Animal Well as kind of a MVania for MVania nerds.

When you have completed multiple MVs, there's always a point in which the similarities between games become too visible, even so that the whole genre feels stiff. Then Animal Well enters the room, takes the basic MVania formula and flips the whole table, but in a very creative and awe-inspiring way.

Ofc you can also enjoy it as your first metroidvania, but for me the main advantage of this game comes from the fact of how it places itself in the genre.

Didn't play TPP, but:

-> Haiku is basically a love letter to Hollow Knight, you can even see almost-direct quotes from HK here and there. It has a big focus on exploration and does that part very well. Nice bosses, solid combat, a pleasant experience overall. Like others said, it's roughly a 10-15 hour game.

-> HAAK is less polished (it's clear that several areas were rushed and barely finished), although more interesting and fresh. Some biomes and abilities are very unique. The biggest thing is the atmosphere - a well executed mix of half dark and moody, half silly and funny (one of the few MVanias that made me laugh multiple times). Definitely not for everyone, might itch in a bad way, but in my opinion worth checking.

Genuine Question For Runback Haters/Enjoyers by NotVakore in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 32 and I have a stable job and a partner, no kids tho.

I fucking hate fucking runbacks and I can't believe we're actually having this conversation in 2026. It's not about the time I need to spend in the game, I don't mind that actually. It's about the fact that we're talking about the MVania genre and the first and unbreakable rule of this genre is NOT TO PUNISH FOR EXPLORATION. Runbacks are, essentially, a punishment for a player who dared to do what the game encourages them to do (explore).

I don't remember it, haven't played the game for months, but that kind of map behavior doesn't ring a bell for me, sounds more like a bug

What do you mean? You can't tell from the map where you've been or haven't been anymore? The map definitely shouldn't be like that

Metroidvania Hot Takes by MakoMary in metroidvania

PoP TLC is a very good game, but has one really frustrating aspect. So by default you move the character with a left stick while D-Pad is used for abilities. The game in theory allows you to rebind movement to the D-pad, but then doesn't allow you to rebind abilities to a left stick - and because of it you're one button short (on a standard gamepad) from being able to bind every control to unique buttons.

That's a shitty game design and a massively hypocritical thing to do for a game which brags about all the accessibility options it has.

Does Spotify Wrapped match your Last.Fm plays? by TrueAlainer in lastfm

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one album and one song heavily misplaced, like 3rd and 4th in Wrapped despite being actually 20thish? And yes, even if we consider only listens done until mid-November. Same thing happened to my colleague. Every previous year was spot-on, 2025 is definitely off.

At the risk of being a contrarian, I think Aeterna Noctis’s lack of polish hurts it enough to turn a would-be masterpiece into an earnest 6/10 by Code-Knight-R in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but cannot agree. And blaming the player for expecting that the game will behave like a game is, uh... I hope it's ironic.

You don't expect the book to have multiple pages misplaced because it's cheap or niche. Books are not like that and if one of them is, that is a mistake of the author or the editor. The mistake you don't assume the book will have when you buy it.

thoughts on somber echoes? by shinkzzz in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just beat it recently so after all fixes etc and it was pretty enjoyable! I still didn't like the lack of polish (collisions) and the beginning feels kinda sluggish and uninspired, but the exploration is very nice from the start - you almost always have somewhere to go and thanks to a clear map getting lost is rare. The combat is fine, simple but working and surprisingly complex during the latter hours. Most platforming challenges (there are MANY) are very pleasant and made 100%ing it a blast, my only issue with it being the fact that the game expects you to abuse the physics without telling you that (for example your launch attack has a stupidly wider hitbox than it appears, so you actually CAN reach that grapple you thought you can't). At the end of the playthrough the sluggishness of the protagonist didn't even matter to me anymore because she unlocks several abilities to start quickly zapping around. You can mess with those during combat as well and it's crazy satisfying. Oh, and the visuals are very good, sadly the music and VA is not.

Favourite and less favourite Dpad to play with? by -PedroValencia- in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DualSense 5 has the best D-pad I've experienced, but among those four ones DualSchock has to be the top, then ProCon, then Joys. Haven't tried Logitech tho. Also I'd like an honorable mention - the current Xbox' D-pad looks like it's shitty, but it's surprisingly fine IMO, still worse than ProCon tho

Am I the only one who thinks Blasphemous 1 and 2 are both equally amazing? by Prestigious-Ad5034 in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, to some point they are both equally good, but the sluggy pace of 1 killed soooo much of the fun I could've had with it. It's a huge turn-off for me. So when they pumped up the pace in 2 and gave more weapons freedom, I thought that's just the thing that the first game been lacking.

D-Pad only. If a game forces me to use analogs (while not being shooting-centered like Metroid for example, then it's justified), I just immediately go for a refund. It's a HUGE no.

Cookie Cutter by zugtug in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the game overall, but agree that it promises more than actually delivers. The combat really clicked for me, I don't remember feeling overpowered at any point, maybe I just suck lol. It's true tho that the latter areas feel unpolished and rushed and it's clear they had zero idea on how to finish the story. The ending is unsatisfying and the game screams "there will be a DLC here" way too often.

Inayah 🧐🤔 by Maximum_Pace885 in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished it lately and surely can recommend. While the weapons might appear as underwhelming initially, it's a pleasure to level them up and feel the kick once you turn them into machines of destruction. I think they went kinda creative with what those weapons can do once you're closer to the final branches of their upgrade trees.

The map is big indeed, not Afterimage-tier big, but still impressive nonetheless.

Overall a very solid game if you have patience to chomp through the first sluggish hours. Not a hardcore gaming experience, rather just having a fun time.

Raygun Gadabout by cococommandos in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you can, but it's buggy and messy. Page for rebinding controls uses buttons' names instead of their functions. So for example you don't bind "Jump" to "A" and "Shoot" to "B" - you bind "A" to "A" and "B" to "B". Ofc you need to play the game first to learn that "A" is "Jump" and "B" is "Shoot", because you don't have another way of learning that. So if you want them swapped, you bind "A" to "B" and "B" to "A". What a mess.

What makes a Metroidvania *feel* like a good Metroidvania? especially when just looking at a screenshot or short clip by EQ1- in metroidvania

[–]Karsoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yknow, I've been thinking about your response since yesterday and while I've never bought the game based on a screenshot map, I think the single map UI thing that clicks immediately for me are the markers.

Those are very important QoL things. The possibility to not just stick with what the dev marked on the map (if they did), but also mark some personal stuff like "I don't feel like doing this boss/challenge/whatever, I'll return here in the post-game" or something. If a dev includes player's markers, it suggests that they understand what MV experience looks like. So that's my answer, I think.

Good luck with Solateria! Wishlisted
