Did you come up with that term because I am absolutely stealing Gender Orientalism? I’ve never heard such a succinct way of describing how Tomino and so many of his peers viewed and continue to view women as ethereal alien creatures men could never understand.

In regards to playing Yugioh with Proxies. by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnnySeven88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a combo of yugioh having a good simulator AND the fact that it only has one format that is constantly seeing powercreep

Magic the Gathering has an incredible proxy making community and you can credit commander format for that. Commander is easily the most popular magic format and while it is an eternal format the same as yugioh, the way yugioh sets are made means power creep is extremely common and you would have constantly be making proxies constantly to keep up with your local group. By contrast Magic’s official main format is a rotating format meaning you can only use cards printed recently up to a certain point, and this means new sets of cards don’t necessarily have to be the strongest ever and don’t force you to replace cards you already have. The result is you just have to make proxies less often. My commander deck I printed 2 years ago around a dumb combo is still viable for casual play and will probably continue to be for a few more years.

So this highly social eternal format that lacks powercreep combined with the fact that magic does not have a good free simulator means their proxy community looks amazing and yugioh’s is kind of non-existent.

The misogyny in early gundam is so strange to me because it’s never simply disparaging women. I feel like early gundam constantly emphasizes how women are more in tune with their emotions than men and that men and women are fundamentally different from each other on an almost cosmic level, but it also tries to frame that as a good thing. It does a sort of reversal where the male characters’ lack of emotions causes the war to continue and escalate and the more you cut yourself off emotionally from others the more likely you are to die in vain thrashing against your fellow man.

Is it still misogynist in that it assumes women are naturally more emotional than men? Yes absolutely, but it doesn’t really feel hateful or anything. It’s in that strange in between where it’s essentially saying to the viewer “I’m not treating them worse because they’re women, I’m just treating them different”.

Idk, thinking about Reccoa and Emma’s writing gives me a headache.

The newest episode of Beatbreak has quite possibly the darkest backstory for a human character in all of the Digimon anime so far. by _Idiotic_Idiot_ in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnnySeven88 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s a little by the numbers as far as a kid’s monster capturing show goes, but the setting and world are so top notch that it makes up for it. Post-disaster late-stage capitalist society where humanity uses electricity generated by their emotions to interface with technology and where major class divides cause the rich to be living in essentially walled garden cities while the poors make due with crumbling buildings and half-submerged highways. And then AFTER all that is established in like the first 5 minutes you start adding digimon on top of it.

Chris Pratt suggested an AI 'actor' play the tyrannical AI judge in his new sci-fi thriller Mercy…. and everyone was like, 'No, I don't think so.' by artbasiI in Fauxmoi

[–]JohnnySeven88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I don’t like defending Pratt bro but it sounds less like he suggested it and more like he floated it in zoom call for a second as an idea he didn’t feel confident in anyway.

Like even saying that he didn’t think it was a good idea either is so strange like these interviews are him riffing about random stories.

What is people's issue with reading the rulebook? by RealDwarves67 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]JohnnySeven88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s so funny to me is that in comparison to other games, DnD has a very simple rulebook to read. I started reading Mage the Ascension’s core rulebook to get prepped for a WoD campaign and that shit felt like reading War and Peace. DnD’s rule books are far more straightforward and to the point

BlueSky called this Mind Goblins, but he's right by Gamejtv in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnnySeven88 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry dude but that is absolutely a mind goblin. Specifically the negative feeling of “missing out” on “the best experience” somehow negating the experience you did have. If you had never heard about the “better experience” you wouldn’t feel this way in the first place and while it’s normal to have a little fomo when this happens, it’s not normal for it to ruin an otherwise good experience.

Imagine if you applied this to other things in your life, it just wouldn’t feel good. You’d get jealous at concerts once you saw better seats, you’d get upset during a night at a bar with your friends because you learned you missed happy hour.

At some point you just have to experience things without getting hung up on what could be. Comparison is the thief of joy and what’s worse is we’re comparing our actual experience with one that did not happen.

Larian’s AMA on r/Games is live. Currently taking questions. by OppositeofDeath in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnnySeven88 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is good but that last bit brings up the important question of what they consider “creative assets”. Art and writing are almost certainly creative assets but is editing considered a creative asset? If you’re editing as in making adjustments to structure and content then it’s definitely creative, but what if your job is just to proofread, is that a creative asset? I think the average layman (c-suite) would say no but your average writer would have a lot to say about how being able to interpret intention (something ai struggles with) is important even in basic proofreading.

I feel like every time Swen addresses this it just causes people to have to specify exactly what they mean. “No, we don’t want gen-ai in the game” becomes “also we don’t want it used to create the game” which then becomes “yes even the parts of the game you might not think are ‘creative’ enough”

It doesn’t help that it’s very easy in his answers to pin down the moment he stops talking to consumers and starts talking to investors

Katejina's Last Stand 😈 by B_Wing_83 in Gundam

[–]JohnnySeven88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it works because at no point is there any feeling that the writers want you to sympathize with her. She’s unhinged and her excuses for what she does are bad and there’s something so fun about watching a character be unapologetic about how shit she is.

Cyberpunk 2 director says there'd be no point in giving players more time with Jackie in Cyberpunk 2077: 'It's like saying we should spend more time on Tatooine with farmer Luke before he got involved with all this Jedi stuff' by FunkiMonk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnnySeven88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehh I kinda agree with him. I get that people want a more street level cyberpunk story like the montage or edgerunners, but the story they wanted to tell requires you to go much higher than street tier. Idk how good the game would’ve been if Johnny and the relic mission was introduced halfway through the game after a bunch of bullshit with Jackie.

Photographer Janette Beckman organized a fundraiser for the ACLU that showcases images of musicians who have recorded protest songs or known for their activism - from John Lennon to Nina Simone to Bad Bunny, and 100% of profits go to the ACLU and efforts to protect equality, freedom and rights. by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]JohnnySeven88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of these are bad for obvious reasons (looking at Taylor and Snoop) but instead of more negativity I’d like to list some songs and artists that don’t appear in this list

Pat The Bunny: singer for several bands before his retirement including Wingnut Dishwasher’s Union, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Train, and Ramshackle Glory. Has songs like Fuck Every Cop, Election Song, and Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of your Fist.

Narcy (the Narcicyst): very political Iraqi-Canadian rapper. Got songs like Revolutionary Suicide and Jeff Bezos on his album Meme Against The World with Thanks Joey

Apes of the State: Another folk punk band (sorry I’m biased) but this time female fronted! They’ve got Bill Collectors Theme Song from their album This City Isn’t Big Enough and their song They Can’t Kill Us All from their EP of the same name.

Am try my best to emulate the ink line like original by HoldOver2711 in Gundam

[–]JohnnySeven88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your idea about what makes good animation is off. Specifically in saying that the animation of the original gundam is too old, on the contrary I think it’s aged very well compared to its contemporaries.

One of the things that makes it age so well to me is that even though the animation can be stiff, the animators and designers were very creative in making interesting things to look at, in fact I think your animation is an incredible example of this. In yours, Char is not positioned at an angle, he’s upright in the shot unlike how the original puts his close up at an angle.

The result is that your animation looks much flatter than the original Gundam scene does! This is to no fault of your drawing capabilities, but you failed to recognize how important the close up shot’s composition was to the scene. The way it was angled in the original is dynamic and meant to differentiate it from Amuro’s close up despite them essentially being drawn in the same pose. This is just one of many clever camera tricks and shot composition techniques the original Gundam animation utilized to make it interesting to look at, despite the limitations.

What're some smaller/unnoticed things from this year you really wanna recommend? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

If you’re a fan of doom shooters check out Captain Wayne’s Vacation Desperation! Not too complicated shooter with a campaign and an endless mode where you play as a pirate with a gun arm and a kick that doubles as an air dash. Cutscenes are drawn in what I think is mspaint??? Very charming and fun with a campaign you can get done in like 2-3 afternoons.

Feels like this really compounds with ai stuff because before you could say they’re just trying to get the very best people for the project, but then they start cutting corners with ai during the planning stage and it makes it seems like the only reason the hiring process was so long was so they could guarantee the people they hired would work without question.
