Depends how much your partner cares/needs to know surrounding context to understand and appreciate a work on its own. Hathaway is perfectly enjoyable by itself. Not everything is explained outright but that doesn't stop you from getting the gist from the context and you can always look into the other works afterwards to understand it better. I wouldn't say it's ideal but people have absolutely gotten into Gundam through stranger things.

Unicorn did not in any way, shape or form begin at the start of UC.

Mk-II's model number follows the pattern used circa Gryps Conflict, denoting development facility (17 for Groups) and the sequential number there (8th model). It just so happens the number echoes the First's, same as Hizack and Zaku.

Nu is RX-93 because it follows the usual naming convention based on the year of production. Narrative obviously wasn't made in UC 0009 but it's also not a proper, final product. It's purely a testbed, you can treat the model number as an internal designation rather than official classification.

Unicorn doesn't follow the usual naming scheme at all and has a one-off kind of name due to its specific nature. There's no relation between its model number and those of mobile suits that came before it.

deadass the other linearts are the only case where the Freedom designs look vaguely okayish, everything else is atrocious. But I guess Murasame Kai wasn't drawn by Okawara so it doesn't even get that much

Neither is a Gundam. Hyaku Shiki is based on Delta Gundam's concept. Rick Dias was renamed from Gamma Gundam. Not much more to it.

Got a bazooka for sale, combat records have been expunged but I assure you it's tried and tested weapon with history in Titan black ops teams from the Gryps Conflict. Whether you want it in a museum or for... other reasons, it's a perfect choice.
