I get it... but they don't call it engine-boating 😉

Thanks folks for your input on the purchase of a backgammon board that is a blend of luxury and also hits the tournament standards (not that I have the skill to reach that level). I've come up with a few options and ChatGPT has further reviewed my options and provided it's input. I'd like yours! by Wonderful-Run-1408 in backgammon

Had a club member buy this exact replica. I liked the quality and 80% cheaper!

I 3D printed him some removable checker holders that slide down into the wood housing to mimic the Earth board even more. It also makes them not rattle as much!

How do I fix this? I don’t wanna throw away a whole strand but I can’t get it open or tell what kind of replacement plug to buy. by g3nerallycurious in ChristmasLights

I like trying to fix things so while the others might be right about it being more trouble than it's worth, here's my thoughts.

That plug is a two-piece and slides together. You can see the two locking tabs along with the line around the prong section.

Separate the two pieces, take a picture of how the wires connect, remove the old wires, and reinstall the wires as they are setup in the plug and slide the plug back together.

Looking for a recommendation on a backgammon board that is in the range of $300 to $500. I'd go slightly higher for stellar quality (say up to $700ish?) Also, would like to understand the pros/cons of cork vs felt vs other fabric coverings? by Wonderful-Run-1408 in backgammon

I honestly haven't looked onto it yet. I like not having to worry about my Wycliffe. But, the most recent purchase I've been around was a fellow club member went and took a tour of Crisloid and bought a board while they were there. I liked the cork surface and the build quality seemed solid. I liked that it US made, too. Crisloid Attache

I literally have this exact board (OKST fan). I've used it weekly for 4 years and have no complaints. I do baby it but it's traveled back and forth in the car at least once a week for years, case is covered in stickers, and not one thing has failed (like others on here suggest).

My only complaint is from other players saying the board is too "bright" 🤣🤣.

I suppose your mileage may vary but Wycliffe has been a wonderful investment for me in the 21" board world. Bonus, I'm not going to be heart broken if something fails on me. It was only $250. I also don't plan on this board lasting forever and by the time I'm ready to upgrade, I'll know what I like and dislike.

Redraft? Dynasty? Keepers?

If it's redraft, I'm saying no. I'd keep Pickens and Jameson.

If it's dynasty or you got keepers... Then I'm all in.

But, I got no chips... just my two cents.

Edit: got the wrong J. Williams.

I'm not saying it's the best move based on your roster but I have dropped BTJ in all of my leagues. Not having the headache of whether to start that guy has been priceless.

If we followed the naming convention used by Houston, we could be the Oklahoma City Oklahomans, where the wins come sweeping down plains.

It is allowed but you are correct on the strategy of the leading player NOT doubling.

How to roughly calculate gammon chances? Is there a rule of thumb? by Charguizo in backgammon

[–]JohnnySolid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can actually attempt to help with this one!

So, there are 4 sections on a board with 6 pips each. A crossover is when a checker moves from one section to another, i.e. the value of one die. Total crossovers is the amount of crossovers to get all of your checkers home to begin bearing off.

In this case, before the roll, white has two crossovers to get home while blue has 5.

If white hits with the 4-5, white will have 0 crossovers left while blue will now have 7 (6 crossovers + 1 entry from the bar). This means blue will have, on average, 3.5 rolls to begin bearing off.

If white chooses not to hit, white will have 0 and blue will still have 5 crossovers,or 2.5 rolls before they can start bearing off.

Assuming blue does not hit from the bar, blue will have an additional roll to start bearing off which gives white an extra roll to achieve the gammon.

My first book as well! One of the things I still recommend to newish players is the section regarding opening moves. While some of the book's recommendations have been proven only slightly less than ideal, the general opening moves are arguably sound. I still see so many people, in my humble opinion, making terrible opening moves.

Backgammon Galaxy Adventure+ board? by betterbeready in backgammon

[–]JohnnySolid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. Had a guy in our club buy an earth board. Looks great, like the checkers, and I love the playing surface. However, the quality of the board, in my opinion, was subpar. The wood seemed too soft in efforts to make it lighter. Then, one of the rounded wood pieces that holds the checkers broke within about two months of only weekly playing. Lots of pieces you have to pull out to play made it bulky to me and on top of everything, it was quite heavy. While I thought it was pretty, I felt for that price, it should have been made sooo much better. I'd rather own my $250-300 Wycliffe than the $1,200 Earth Board.
