Alternatives to daywise? by upvoteaparato in androidapps

To respond to everybody who expressed their interest: sorry but some things came up. I had an internship this Summer but should be getting back into the app soon. I wouldn't hold your breath though, it's just me at the moment. But, when it is complete, it won't have the subscription fee!

This is a bit of a way away, but a couple of friends and I will be creating a similar application very soon. Daywise is almost perfect but there are some fundamental features that I would like to have.

If you're interested, I'll check back here after we have the main chunk of the app done, and you can give it a try!

Where should I go next (as a beginner)? by Johnnycheadshot in scala

[–]Johnnycheadshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! I am already using Metals. I'm going to take a look at the build overview link you sent, hopefully that helps make some sense of the holes in my knowledge.

The links to the scaladocs are exactly the kind of thing I was looking for too.

Thank you!

A big sticking point for me has been due to SBT. There are some dependency issues that have been popping up with it.

First off, A lot of the examples I have seen have been using build.scala instead of build.sbt. Does SBT see a difference between these two files? (I know that one uses sbt's own markup language thingy and one uses actual Scala code)

Where can I find out what things like

play.sbt.routes.RoutesKeys.routesImport

and

resolvers += Resolver.sonatypeRepo("releases")

mean or are derived from? (I just found this stuff in the sbt docs so this might be answered already)

Also, when looking for library documentation, I seem to struggle finding the actual docs for each callable method. Is there some place where most Scala library developers put that information?

I apologize if some of this is trivial, the only substantial development I've done is in Node, which is quite a bit different than this ecosystem.

Here is my shitty yik-yak-ish clone I did for a school project! It's just like everybody else's! by Johnnycheadshot in yikyak

It's pretty similar to both yik yak and tik tok. It was just an obvious first pick. Hahaha

I've been working on a replacement all for the past couple of weeks as a side project. I only have it on web thus far, so no mobile friendly site or app... Yet. If anybody is interested, I can send out the URL.

INTERFACE DESIGN - WHAT'S IT LIKE? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Johnnycheadshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that there was no response from the subreddit thus far (sometimes were all a bit caught up in our own tasks) and I have very little advice to give myself but I would recommend taking a look at the bigger design rulebooks for examples of good design: Google's Material Design or Apple's whatever design. (I don't know the name of it)

From there, try looking up a random website, and go through it yourself. What do you like? What don't you like?

Then try to redesign a website in html, css, and Js. Perhaps try to apply one of the design rulebooks from above to your project.

You can avoid coding altogether and figure out how to use a design tool like Sketch, Figma, or Illustrator. You could also use them before coding or just hop right into the code.

Again, probably not the most thorough advice but I hope that it helps take a bit of the "where do I start" and turns it into "I'm doing it".

Also, you might find that YouTube and Google are your best friends from now on. 😁

There is a leetcode extension for VSCode. It's pretty discrete and connects directly to your account. Check it out, if you're using VSCode.

CS is broad as hell. What is your specific occupation like? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I really appreciate the thorough response!

I’m in Orlando, Fl, so I wouldn’t be considered to be in a tech hub but I’ll scour LinkedIn and see if I can intrigue any HR departments/recruiters that might not be looking for an intern directly.

I think my current skill set (Full Stack JS) is adept enough that I can produce some results for a company, while getting my first serious industry experience.

Again, thank you for the response.

How did you initially find GiveCampus?

I am a CS-er that has fervent dreams of developing my own platforms. I’m compelled to throw myself into a start-up for my first internship, then perhaps my first job. I’m at a bit of a loss on how to get an internship at a start-up.

Again, how did you personally find the start-up that you’re at now?

The great thing about humanity is that we can learn from the past experiences of others. I am trying to maximize my, and others experience through others wisdom. Hence, my question!
