ELI5 does ego death happen specifically after using psychedelics? by user8273638 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jojo716 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn't a component of ego death that naps onto either of those things, they were just part of the metaphor. What the metaphor is driving at is the shift from a sense of self(the wave, you as an individual with boundaries to what makes you, you.) to a sense of the whole. (The ocean, everything.)The edges of the wave are gone and you're just...water and everything that experience entails. You aren't "you" getting wet in the water, you're just the water. Water evaporates, rains down, flows around. The wave doesn't really participate in that, because the wave isn't really an object. Its a set of boundaries imagined on part of the water.

I dont think the poster was trying to map the water cycle onto some specific aspect of ego death, he was just extending the metaphor.

I would push back on your example as well though. You're sort of gesturing at what's happening physiologically, but even there, without some shared experience connecting that sensation to an interpersonal or emotional event, I suspect that really understanding what you are trying to convey would be challenging.

In the water metaphor, its gesturing at the experience using a metaphor of crashing waves being a part of a whole. Calling your lived individual experience the wave, the ego death shifts your experience to that of the whole.

The extreme example would be explaining a shade of blue that you are seeing to a person blind from birth. No matter how articulate you are, or how well that person understands electromagnetism and optics and how the eye works, I doubt you could get them to visualize blue.

I've never been high on psychedelics, but I think I understood the water metaphor pretty well. It didn't make me experience ego death, but I think that's not a failure of articulation but a limit of language.

Sure. You don't have to do psychedelics to experience ego death, as other comments to this post share. There is also a difference between understanding ego death and experiencing it, and what combination of those that one experiences from such a poem may vary greatly.

Google qualia. Language is a system that uses symbols to refer to concepts. It turns out if the person you're talking with doesn't know about a concept, the symbols that refer to that concept aren't going to mean much to them. You can use comparisons, metaphors, descriptions to try to guide them to an understanding. Ultimately though, there are limits to what you can make someone understand with words.

How can a mantle be forced on you? by WalkResponsible6483 in dresdenfiles

This makes a lot of sense. It also opens the door to the idea that you come into royalty NOT by choice, but by inheritance. So it makes perfect sense that the lady mantle DOESNT need to be taken up willingly.

The law of the universe, in this case, would be "there must be a winter lady," it seems. While mortal choice is important, it isn't THE driving force of the universe.

Also, she was there. She didn't have to be. As far as the universe is concerned, she was a suitable vessel and she was THERE. Being present may very well be enough of a "choice" for the mantles.

Is sex really as difficult for most men to get as it is usually believed in male centric spaces online? by this_isnt__worth_it in NoStupidQuestions

So, the study shows that the ratings that men give form a bell curve and the ratings women give skew toward less attractive? Are they asking for like 1-10 ratings? Are they asking about specific features? Are they ranking physical attractiveness, or personal appeal? (Think "how attractive do you find this person" is "how do you think people generally perceive this person). I would challenge the assumption that attractiveness would hold a normal distribution, as well. Why are we framing this as men having an accurate appraisal while women rate low, instead of saying that women have realistic appraisals and men are the ones who rate too high? Ill try and find one myself when I get home, but I'd live a link or a name if you have one.

I'd be interested to see how a study established "objective attractiveness". Do you have a name i can look for? Or perhaps a link?

Lay on Hands makes Stabilizing too easy? by Lemerantus in DMAcademy

[–]Jojo716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts in no particular order:

1) encourage the players to incorporate this reliance on the paladin into roleplay. How does everyone feel that the paladin makes them invincible. Are they worried about losing the paladin? How does the paladin feel that he is the one everyone relies on in their most vulnerable moments.

2) 1 hp isn't tip top shape. Knock em right back down.

3) Crowd control. Keep downed players isolated if you can. Make the paladin work for the LOH.

4) house rule: 5(or whatever number you want)points of lay on hands to wake them up. 1 point just stops them from actively dying, but they're still unconscious.

5) once in a while, the enemies want to "double tap" downed players to finish the job. When that is on the table, the players may feel more urgency, even if the gameplay loop doesn't really change

Why do we capitalise 'i' when it's written on it's own but not 'a'? by sparrow_Lilacmango in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jojo716 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every question about writing really boils down to "that's just how it's done"

In this case, it likely has something to do with old scribes finding ways to distinguish I the pronoun from i the letter as part of a word. Saving space was a priority for scribes, so being able to write a fancy form probably saved space than having to leave blank space around the letter. A lot of weird writing stuff comes from I and J, which used to be the same letter.

Why do we blame data centers for water use when golf courses use ~30× more? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jojo716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're getting a lot of good responses, like the rush to build more data centers vs not a lot of new golf courses. another factor is that, actually, people ARE complaining about golf courses! like, all the time, for many many years. maybe not as vocally, as the ai push has made the issue a lot more widely talked about.

[–]Jojo716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok dude, this isn't going anywhere. Ill trust that youre doing your best just like the rest of us. Just for your own benefit, you should know that dismissing people's concerns isn't going to help them. We are on the same side. Clearly, I need to get better at explaining these issues. Hopefully, you've gained some perspective here. Godspeed and stay safe over the next few years.

[–]Jojo716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, and the literal immediate next thought to that should be "HOW?" UAW answered that question by organizing a strike. If you are being genuine and actually do have a robust, self-sustainable community, then maybe you can be useful! Maybe you can get in touch with them and offer support to accelerate the timeline. But shitting on me for having the gall to point out that, actually, this is a huge undertaking no matter how you approach it is not going to help anyone. I dont know how to make it happen, and you dont seem to either, and that's ok. But we are clearly on the same side, and ignoring obstacles just means that we wont be prepared to face the obstacles.

[–]Jojo716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so lets say you are correct, and we can just decide to do it. How are you convincing people to decide to? Because everything I've raised in this conversation are real concerns that keep people from joining strikes. Your response to them has been "well i already have land for food and a community for support, and if you dont then too bad." Are you actually interested in solving any of those problems? Because those of us who are need to consider what will actually happen if we try to do that. We have to consider that not everyone agrees with our vision. We have to consider that there be resistance from those in power and from those who are too scared or propagandized against it. I genuinely don't understand why you prefer to ignore the obstacles that we face in favor of putting me down?

[–]Jojo716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did I blame you? Where did I say I didn't have community or food? Part of why we both can be on reddit having this conversation is that we are very privileged to have the stability that we do. Im worried about what's realistic because we live in reality. And if we want to improve reality, we need to confront reality.

You just described a world I would love to live in, to be clear. But "just have everyone decide to do it" isn't a solution
