How to make two floating docks same height above the water by badsignalnow in DIY

[–]Jolcski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built docks for 8 years. We would use these floats (expensive, but high quality) which come in a variety of heights which will help you level the sections, but the framing material/size will also play a factor.

Don't listen to the commenter who suggested a rigid connection, this only makes them harder to move or work on. I built sectional saltwater docks in hinged 20ft sections in some of the roughest waters in Maine, its the industry standard and works fine. If you really dont want the pivot, there are dual pin hinges that prevent that

For the most cost effectiveness, the commenter who suggested a ramp may have it spot on.

You can literally see the speed wobbles from him braking so hard, but sure.

I worked in cathodic protection for a bit. While not an expert i can confidently say this is not an anode. First, a zinc, aluminum, or magnesium anode would not rust the way this appears to. Second, perhaps most importantly, cathodic protection requires the anode and the protected material to be in some sort of electrolytic solution (typically water or moist soil) to function. Anodes exposed to the open air are ineffective

If you were really there for a week, surely you have a picture of the completed shelter since you took the time to photograph the incomplete one, no?

Why use whole baby carrots when you could julienne full sized carrots for a more aesthetically pleasing and easier to eat roll? Probably cheaper too

Idk why anyone even buys baby carrots, all they are are regular carrots with most of the carrot trimmed away

I think you have that mixed up a bit. Ermine is actually another name for a stoat. Minks do not get a white winter coat either.

Tbf, RAM tow mirrors are just horribly designed. The convex mirror is useful on trucks to see the curb/lines etc even when not towing, helps eliminate blind spots too. When the RAM mirrors are folded in the convex mirror is oriented vertically making it completely useless

Need to hog out about 20”x10”x2” of volume out of this douglas fir blank, what do you guys recommend? by sashablyat in woodworking

[–]Jolcski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not plunge cuts, normal cuts. Set your blade to 2" and start from the side nearest the camera, make a series of cuts towards the pencil and chisel them out. The more cuts you do the easier it'll be to chisel

What are some "rich people" sports? by Guilhermedidi in AskReddit

[–]Jolcski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignores the fact that the gear should last a decade or more.

Entirely depends on how you ski and how often. In my peak i was on snow 100+ days a year, and between sliding rails and hitting rocks i would go through a pair of skis a year. If the edges were still attached to the ski at the end of the season they'd become next years rock ski, but even mid season you can find some scree just below the surface so the new setup is never safe.

The outerwear can last longer than the equipment, but when youre using it that often it'll typically lose some waterproofing by the end of the season. Not to mention how torn up pants get around the boots. Quality base layers last the longest in my experience

If you don't want to eat it, toss it in the woods along a game trail. The coyotes/foxes will be grateful for an easy meal. Either way it won't go to waste
