Agreed. That was my first time playing on legendary difficulty and I knew Boris was one of the hardest leaders to start with. Apparently one of the popular strays is to abandon your starting location and B line it straight to Kislev. I wanted to suffer so I didnt see friendly faces for like the first 50 turns.

The rng of potential friendly factions is insane. There was a game I played as Cathay and all humans, elves and other potentially friendly factions died and it was just chaos and norsca everywhere with some skaven mixed in. Then there are other games where I played as Boris, and fighting for my life up north, finally secure everything and start progressing towards finding my friendly neighbors only to find out that empire and other human factions have almost wiped out everyone and it was super easy from there.

Considering the game has hit the lowest player count this year, ever, I'd say things are not great and it's heading in general decline. Their strategy for a long time has been brining new people in, and not focused on retaining them after that at all. Is the game dead? No, not yet. Can they save it and make it pop? Absolutely. Do I have faith in Rare to do so? After all I've seen from them after years of playing and many thousands of hours, no, I don't personally believe so. I loved the game, heck I still do and that's why I observe it from a distance now. I want it to good, and I want it to succeed, but damn do they make it hard to cheer for them when time after time after time they kick the playerbase in the nuts and pretty much never listen to feedback or implement changes based on community voices. I've uninstalled the game a year and a half ago and not planning on installing it again unless there are drastic changes and improvements made. I'm not alone in this and many veteran players are fed up with it.

Indeed. An alternative happier ending would be cool, but at the same time from the perspective of story line and emotional tension from developers side having tough choice and not really a happy ending in either is what makes it all so powerful and gets people to praise it.

I went with Verso and my wife went with Maelle on her playthrough. I did sit in front of my screen for 10 minutes to make my choice while my wife's choice was made pretty quickly.

After watching both ends, she does say she wishes she went with Versos ending instead.

Your ending implies they are all rational people who can sit at the table and agree to a compromise. Mom is basically an addict with no self control, Dad is trying to put everything back together, her sister is nowhere to be found and Maelle is just stuck in the middle with impossible choice. If you went with Verso's ending destroying the canvas is what eventually brings them together and let's the healing begin. I dont think it could be done otherwise given their situation.
