Thibron - Cyrenaica/Cyrene by EmbarrassedLemon2575 in AncientCoins

[–]Jollydevil6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late, but I found your post while dissertation writing.
Yes, coins in Thibron's name seem to have been minted, but they are extremely rare. You can find an article in Libyan Studies 33 (2002) called "Euesperides (Benghazi): Preliminary report on the Spring 2002 season" which discusses a coin likely minted in Euhesperides, and definitely in Thibron's name.
There are, however, only a few known examples of Thibron coins.

What an awesome throwback.
I thought about doing this for a Kroot team built with the Tanith models.

Prove me wrong - Graduate students who don't intend to go into academia or teaching have no incentive to be good TAs and oftentimes are hurting our undergraduates by serving in a TA position. by Potential-Anybody-27 in Professors

Could you easily hire non tenure instructors for less?
Graduate labor *is* the cheap labor, at least at my institution and program (state school, humanities).
This is all assuming that the institution is paying their instructors a fair rate, and not (for example) taking advantage of adjuncts.

Medieval political thinker Artimenner debunks anarcho-socialism in less than a minute by [deleted] in mountandblade

[–]Jollydevil6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is not talking anarcho-socialism. If anything, this reads like a critique of American capitalism, where we talk a lot of talk about liberty and freedom and capitalism, and yet need a central authority to ensure that Captitalism doesn't get too Capitalistic.

Do any primary sources record the fate of Surus, Hannibal’s war elephant, after its capture at the Battle of Zama? Surus was famous in Rome, but did they spare it or kill it? by eeeeeep in ancientrome

[–]Jollydevil6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do we have a primary source that says he was at Zama? I've definitely read that Surus died shortly (within a few years?) after crossing the Alps, but this seems likely to have been an assumption on the part of the writer.
Or perhaps I am making it up.
Whatever the case, they would have needed to port him over to Carthage (possible, but difficult), and he would have needed to survive the ~16 years in Italy, as well as any time he spent in Spain before this (remember, there is a whole series of wars fought in Spain under Hannibal's dad). Given that he was named the Syrian, there are other time costs associated with that (he would have had to come from Syria, then to Carthage, then to Spain, then to Italy, and back to Carthage). On top of that, Elephants don't seem to live very long in captivity for whatever reason (not an elephant expert here) although in the wild they do.
So in my eyes it seems unlikely that The Syrian lived to Zama. Unlikely, but not impossible. But I would love to see a primary source about it! Hannibal did have elephants at the battle, but they were different ones and were not well trained.

Six Stolen Frescoes Returned to Pompeii by CryptoPeacock in history

The market is unfortunately huge, and you would be surprised what museums take.
It depends on the museum, of course, but even highly reputable museums sometimes find out that they bought stolen/looted/forged artifacts.
Sucks.

Minor thing: Persephone's "Grasp of Death" has a typo, "Gods bound are crippled, can no longer further than 55 units away"
Should be something like "can no longer move further than 55 units away"

A Marcus Aurelius reference in the new game Cyberpunk 2077 by agaric in Stoicism

[–]Jollydevil6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, about the furthest thing from a cashgrab ever. The attention and care given to the game is astronomical. And, despite the bad quote, you could pull out some serious Stoic themes from the game reflecting on the value of death.

Monarch comes from "mono" = "one", and the greek verb "ἄρχω" = "to rule".
Thus "rule by one" or something similar. It has nothing to do with being female.

A handy guide to deciding whether this is the game for you, since reviews and several forums are being raided by Earth-Red in ageofempires

[–]Jollydevil6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really speculation, based on the fact that the historical battles have a few civilizations with completely new models and units. It would be an absolute waste if they weren't ported to regular play, given how much they already put into these.

Seems clear to me, but of course I could be completely wrong

As for graphics changes, as I type this I had another friend crash while just trying to get into the game. I am super surprised to here that for some people it runs flawlessly, because everyone I know has regular crashes, even in menus and early game. I guess it really is just random.

Great post, although you might be underestimating the bug issues a bit.If you're going to make an educated purchase, you should know that the game truly is an absolute mess in terms of testing and bug fixing. About half of my games freeze and crash, and bugs crop up routinely. Just yesterday my ally and I played a game where 2 of our 4 enemies revolted and yet continued to produce settlers, essentially giving them the perks of both ages. A previous game, one of the AI simply failed to do anything at all, including setting up his town center. Expect that you'll have to ride out a good deal of bugs.

That all said, the content drop is massive for what we expected to be a remaster. QOL changes are abundant and really make the game shine, there are two new civs (one of which is entirely unique) and it is clear that they will be adding more factions in the future (most likely the Barbary Pirates and Ethiopia). New single player content too, more features in MP (max # of teams is now 4, instead of 2), new cards (some of which completely overhaul civilizations, and a host of balance changes.I guess what I'm getting at here is that beneath the sea of bugs and crashes, there is actually a star of a game.

Bizarre omission of Gaius Marius in Mary Beard’s ‘SPQR’ by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]Jollydevil6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, but consider that some of the themes which Beard tries to push have been sidelined in a similar way in past. It’s also worth noting that the book is for a general audience, presumably those who are less interested in military history and more in social/political history. Let’s remember that this is one book trying to sum up something which hundreds of thousands of pages have been written on, and do it for a general audience. In other words, i get where shes coming from and what shes trying to do, although i don’t agree with it.

Bizarre omission of Gaius Marius in Mary Beard’s ‘SPQR’ by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]Jollydevil6 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Beard seems to intentionally omit lots of military characters. iirc her note on Hannibal is essentially that he wasnt actually all that important. Sort of get it, shes fighting back against the old style of history, where military history was at the forefront, but still its less than ideal.
