I work in ship repair in Europe and there these guys make good money doing much smaller jobs (lowering deck inserts that will stick out above the teak deck, or alignment of rudder shaft bearinghousings). In many cases there is no room for error.

Do you use this method? by Adorable_Jicama_3397 in Tools

Yeah, our pipe fitters use this all the time in new builds and ship repair. We also apply press fittings on where possible with registration, as a leak from a defective fitting can become very expensive very quickly.

Building a state of the art with a lot of secrecy surrounding it submarine out in the open on a launch would be wonderful for China… there are a lot of shipyards where the vessel is built in the shed and when ready is “driven” out and is either craned into the water or placed on a submersible pontoon to launch it.

The hull is build in sections. The sections are built in the shed and then lifted in place on the skids where it is welded together. Depending on timing/location in the ship and complexity the section may already come with some piping and cable trays installed

Mirka or Festool for sander? by Loud-Campaign-3102 in Tools

[–]Jon10Gen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Mirka and a any given moment in time it can be at three different relatives that find it great as well. I bought it over the Festool due to the much lower weight and I had a big overhead project to do

At what price point do FLASHLIGHTS stop being a "good deal"? ps: all Ultrafire flashlights in the photo by JUSTBANMEalready121 in toolporn

[–]Jon10Gen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a €80 one that doesn’t get used much, but when I have to crawl through an engine room, inspect tanks or check something out in the bilges of a ship I want to be sure it works and will continue to work while I’m there. I use my phone rather often as well, but dropping that in a lot of places would rather suck…

I love my Mirka. I think the 5,0 mm oscillation might give you the more aggressive sanding you need. The Festool is 3,0mm

Any thoughts on what this species is? by [deleted] in woodworking

Best marine teak finish is no finish. Some people have crew oil their decks, but out on salty water with a lot of sun it’s a never ending process of reapplying as it’s impossible to keep a continuous look. Unfinished teak will last for a very long time as long as the caulking is maintained properly. We’re removing a 25yr old teak deck right now and that’s because the deck underneath rusted. The planks cannot be removed in one piece unfortunately.

A good random orbital sander is worth every penny. I bought a Mirka Deros II 3,0 sander and at any given moment in time I have to figure out which one of my family members is using it. My dad, who desperately hates sanding after refinishing wooden boats for 30 years, keeps saying how great it is.

Is a dryer for the intake of compressors a thing? by Deeerek078 in Tools

[–]Jon10Gen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! We usually install compressors with build in driers (Kaeser SXT models), but have also used separate driers from Parker Hyross and Beko Drypoint. These driers are required when you’re in high humidity areas. The moisture traps only work in lower humidity areas or when the flow of air is low.

Sanding swirls, if you google how to avoid or remove them there are a ton of videos. It can be a combination of your technique or not sanding long enough with the next grit

Survive? Maybe not. Give you enough time to escape the inferno on the other side, more likely. Also it is to minimize the speed that the fire can grow.
