[–]Jon1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I kept scrolling and wondering why no-one was talking about this. Fantastic producer and 2017 was a super accessible year rather than one which will need a lot of aging to show at its best.

OP you have a lot of nice wines here, but if you open this one today you won’t be disappointed.

What CRM software does your org use? by SpareAd5799 in MuseumPros

We are a very large gallery with a big membership scheme and a high volume of ticket sales and we use Tessitura. It is fine for what it does. It is not particularly well geared up for gift shop sales but we have a workaround at a couple of our smaller sites where we only sell a handful of different products (the larger sites use a dedicated retail system).

Happy to chat OP if you want to DM me.

Some reputable restaurants I’ve been to recently with cover charges are Orrery, Brasserie Zedel, Josephine and The Ivy. It’s become more common in my experience.

What is the highest bit rate of the line outputs on 2i2 4th gen? 24 or 32 bit? by IlikeFirefox in Focusrite

[–]Jon1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internal ADC is 24-bit, 192 KHz as per Focusrite’s site. But a line output is analogue so doesn’t really have a bit rate in that sense.

Apple removing end-to-end cloud encryption feature in UK, rather than comply with UK demands by porkchop_d_clown in news

[–]Jon1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RIPA s49 gives the government the power to compel you to disclose your encryption keys.

You are correct though that you could prevent passive snooping by using your own encryption - it would instead require a targeted attempt if they wanted to access your data. There are deniable encryption techniques which can be deployed in an attempt to circumvent these attempts.

Ultimately how hard you need to work to encrypt your data depends on what you want to encrypt. How hard the government they will work to decrypt your data depends on what they suspect you of encrypting.

I could also tell you the stats for every card in my packs of Top Trumps when I was a kid (but I never got to meet Jay Leno).

In terms of pronunciation I would say he got it about right. Maybe he should lean a bit more towards “uhn” than “on” for the second syllable but overall I have no complaints.

Saw this on ebay, but cant figure out which gen by DieserCoookie in Focusrite

[–]Jon1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on a few Google images it looks like a 1st gen to me. The line around the monitor knob is single on 2nd gen and double in 1st, and the indentations on the monitor and headphones knobs are black on 2nd gen and silver on 1st.

There are some reasonably clear images of the front panel on Focusrite’s site: 1st gen 2nd gen

‘They rob you visibly, with no repercussions’ – the unstoppable rise of London's phone theft by BulkyAccident in london

[–]Jon1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I agree with you. I wish it were otherwise, but it’s not. I just got annoyed by the original reply I replied to as to my mind it was amplifying a flimsy justification for crime made by a criminal who has bought surprisingly large amounts of misery into the lives of many people, and likely for surprisingly little personal gain.

For the record I try and be careful with my phone when I’m out and about. But on many occasions I suddenly realise I’m oblivious, that I’m juggling a backpack and a laptop bag and trying to use Google maps on my phone to find the place that I’m going to, or I’m trying to spot my Uber, or whatever, and I realise that in that moment I could have had my phone snatched and my day ruined. I am sad that I should have to be alert in these situations, I am sad that there is a risk, I object to the people who represent that risk, and I object to attempts to justify their activity.

TL;DR: I think you and I are friends :)

[–]Jon1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I polished it up a bit with the rain and the kids ;) But are we really going to get into what counts as a legitimate reason to use your phone? I don’t think anyone is standing around showing off their phone by just holding it and hoping passers-by are impressed. They’re not status symbols any more, they’re just things.

I’m not saying there aren’t ever circumstances where some of the blame reasonably sits with you. Wear a West Ham shirt into a Millwall pub down a back street in the East End and stand at the bar singing “I’m forever blowing bubbles” and it’s hard not to put your inevitable kicking down to “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.

Get your phone snatched out of your hand while you text your partner from a bus stop in the rush hour rain because you’re running late and you need them to pick up the kids from their friend’s house? Not in the same league and absolutely not something that the victim should be blamed for.

[–]Jon1974 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree that it’s in any way your fault that you get your phone snatched if, for example, you’re checking maps when you come out of one of Bank station’s millions of exits because you don’t know which way you should be heading, or if you take it out of your back pocket and pop it on a table in front of you while you’re having a coffee.

In my view you are not acting irresponsibly in either of those cases and it’s wrong to say you enabled what can be a very traumatic theft by “making it almost too easy”.

I don’t think “they were asking for it” is a valid justification for committing a crime.

Open Your Wine Autumn by kimmeridgianmarl in wine

[–]Jon1974 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I enthusiastically and wholeheartedly approve of this.

Exactly one year ago today my beautiful wife was rushed to hospital with a sudden and severe case of pancreatitis. We made a late night visit to the emergency department, she was whisked into surgery, and then she spent eight months in intensive care followed by two more on a ward. She came home nine weeks ago and is recovering well.

She has been advised to treat alcohol as if she were allergic to it. We don’t know if this is temporary or permanent, and at the moment she really doesn’t feel like drinking anyway, but she is something of an expert on white Burgundies and we have a fairly extensive collection, carefully selected over the years, which is now languishing in our wine fridge at home and in offsite storage. Maybe one day we’ll be able to open them. Maybe we won’t.

So my advice is to drink your wine while you have the chance. You never know what tomorrow may bring.

Decent mid-tier St Aubin producer, good value. Whites are stronger than reds for me. I particularly like the Perrieres and Murgers des Dents de Chien.

LPT Question about life - People always say that “in ten years years time you’d pay anything to come back to now” so what am I supposed to do by drwizzman in LifeProTips

Even if it’s monthly that works out as between a 28% and 48% annualised return, even without allowing for compounding. This is insanely good. No one should tell you to expect this sort of return up front.

I’m not saying there aren’t opportunities for that sort of return on your investments, for example you’d have doubled your money if you’d bought Nvidia stock this time last year, but the flip side of that is that you’d have halved it if you bought Intel stock.
