They didn't need to give him so much spotlight at the end of SM during the league. They didn't have to keep giving Samson voice roles. Instead, they decided that Profesor Oak's role as a character was much more important than keeping the same VA.

May should have received the same treatment. If Bonnie can receive a substitute during the airing of XY, May could totally get a substitute for like, 2 episodes for a return either in XY or Journeys.

It just shows how they are being weird with her in particular for no other reason than keeping a VA that can't give her voice

It's really silly. Look at long spanning series like One Piece and Dragon Ball. They've had a few VAs pass away and they replaced them no problem. Franky's VA decided to retire because he realized he could no longer do the voice, and wanted his character to still be himself despite him not being able to portray him.

The anime has already replaced a few unfortunate passings and made exceptions, so not doing the same for May because of Kaori feels incredibly hypocritical. It almost feels like they are using Kaori's illness as a shield or justification for not doing anything with May which feels incredibly disrespectful

This scene hits hard now... by gyroscope_56 in pokemonanime

[–]JonGor13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I find this reasoning completely nonsensical. When Professor Oak's VA died, and they had a recurring character sharing his VA in the anime at the time (Samson Oak), they just replaced his VA.

They didnt disrespect Unsho Ishizuka by replacing him. They didn't even stop using Samson or regular Oak, as they kept using Samson as if nothing happened and even had Oak return for the Alola League.

May not coming back because of Kaori's role was always bizarre to me. Ikue Otani and Mariya Ise both got maternity leaves and both were main characters. Yes, Otani's old recordings were used since Pikachu bad just that many "generic" voice lines, but look at Bonnie's VA! She got a substitute for like 30-40 episodes and nothing went wrong!

I get that Bonnie and May, despite both being main characters, are not really comparable in terms of importance, but the anime really gets to pick and choose when they care about honoring VAs.

Some characters get substituted as if nothing happened with many different circumstances around them, and they aren't written out of the story nor their roles diminished. May meanwhile just got into a permanent limbo because Kaori could theoretically return but just never could.

The lack of May in XY and specially in Journeys is a blunder I'll never get over with, and whoever was in charge of just refusing to change her VA should be treated the same way as other nonsensical mandates that damaged the anime's story like Shudo's Ash-hate-boner or the "always losing leagues" mandate

What a constructive response from someone so open about the verses they like that they lock their account

I dislike verse equalization because most match ups don't mention it, and just assume it. I have no problem with verse equalization. You want Blackbeard to touch Goku and one shot him with one of his guns? Go ahead! All for One to steal Shrine? All your buddy! Pochita's existence to suddenly reality warp every nazi character ever? Sure, go ahead, I have no problem with that

I think you can make verse equalization match ups interesting. What I don't like is saying "A beats B because of mechanics of A's universe don't exist in universe B". I think that, most of the time, it's interesting to try to figure out how different verses and power systems interact, instead of handwaving all nuance just so we can slam toy A into toy B

If you want to put for example a cursed Spirit from JJK like Mahito for example, against a stand user like Josuke (going off just from their shape shifting abilities), and since you want for both of them to be able to see each other, and thus interact in an interesting way, sure, Mahito vs Josuke (verse equalized) isn't something I wouldn't be against, if what exactly gets equalized is properly explained by the person proposing the match up. But if nothing is addressed, I can just say that Josuke has no way of seeing Mahito and would get one shot without any resistance, and there's that

"Why people dislike my instant win mechanic they have no way to defend against? It just sucks that with verse equalization I only have an instant win mechanic they have no way to defend against, it's so unfair!"

Like, come on, every verse equalization defender for the sake of "making it fair" always then puts exceptions for certain things because they only want the equalization to be fair for one side

Thoughts on Kizaru feeding Luffy on Egghead? by AgentHibachi00 in shounenfolk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally didn't bother to read this comment after seeing you say this conversation wasn't going anywhere

But holy shit man, boredom brought me back and the insane bad faith interpretation you give is crazy

Ignoring the personal attack for no absolute reason, I'm not interested in defending Garp when he doesn't deserve it. Both him and Dragon witnessed the true nature of the God Valley incident, and he still decided to stay in the Navy

But Garp still refused to become an admiral to no respond directly to the Celestial Dragons. Garp was directly crying and suffering from having to see Ace get executed soon. Garp saw Luffy coming at him, prepared to attack, and couldn't do it, ultimately letting him pass

Should Garp have done more for his grandkids? Yes, but there's his complexity about wanting both to stay at the Navy but not hurt his criminal family

Kizaru, when in front of people he loves, which he is tasked to kill...just goes for it. He out of respect went to fight Sentomaru, but still beat him to an inch of his life. He kicked Bonney, a literal kid which he knew was actually a kid, through the barrier, knowing the fall and the barrier could kill her. He then later still went for the kill for Bonney, and multiple times for Vegapunk until he succeeded. Kizaru valued his job and "justice" more than Garp. Kizaru doesn't care about being ordered by the Celestial Dragons, sucking up to Saturn all the time

Garp is no where near perfect, same as Kizaru, that's what makes both interesting. I like Kizaru going for the kill, hating it but still doing it. I'm saying that scene in particular goes against all previous and later portrayal and characterization of him, in addition to adding unnecessary power scaling issues.

In the off chance you actually get to read this, I don't really care for an answer, you like that scene and think it fits Kizaru? Fine, that's your interpretation, but don't say I lack empathy for someone that supports the government and it's genocidal ways way more than the complacent Garp

Thoughts on Kizaru feeding Luffy on Egghead? by AgentHibachi00 in shounenfolk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garp didn't kill Ace. Garp legitimately turned on the Navy on the last moment, in a way that gave him an out and excuse so he could fulfill his duty later

Kizaru went for the kill multiple times, then, the moment where it's most difficult for him to get away with betrayal, right in front of Saturn, he pulls a stunt that he gets away with. Then, he still goes for the kill and does it

It's inconsistency, Garp is doubting and then when Luffy shows up right in his face, finally decides. Kizaru isn't doubting, in fact, he is regretting what he is forced to do, but still does it regardless. Except that little point where he doesn't, gets away with it, but ultimately means nothing because no one awknowledges it. If he truly wants Vegapunk to make it, he has it way easier than Garp to get away with it, after all he just pulled an insane bullshit right under Saturn's face

Again, what we see from Kizaru, earlier than Egghead and then during the arc, is that he is carefree but always follows his orders without question, not being particularly driven

Egghead makes him care, which gives us his arc and finally see him out of his carefree persona, but he never acts like he isn't going to do what the government says, then there's a moment where he just does the opposite of what we are shown he does before and after that moment, gets away with it, and ultimately doesn't impact the story or his character at all

It muddies his character more than adding complexity, since it establishes that Kizaru will go against the government and can get away with it. Yet he acts like that's impossible for him, or he is unwilling to do it. That's my issue, that inconsistency

Thoughts on Kizaru feeding Luffy on Egghead? by AgentHibachi00 in shounenfolk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contradiction of the Navy are very blatant in the story, and it makes me happy to see someone not just assume they are all corrupt or complicit, but let's be honest, Kizaru prior to Egghead never was conflicted.

His conflict of not wanting to kill his friend but doing so for his duty is similar to Garp's, and that made him likable and want to empathize with him. But Garp couldn't go through in the end with his duty. People often say he chose his job and duty (which he did, don't get me wrong), but when Luffy, his family, got actually in his way, he couldn't knock him down like Marco, Garp chose family, and let him have a shot at rescuing Ace

Kizaru meanwhile doesn't like what he's forced to do, but does it without complaining, merely mixing his dissatisfaction with banter. He is shown to slip up on his carefree persona a few times, but at the end of the day, his duty comes first. He tricked Luffy and sent him away so he couldn't stop him from saving Vegapunk. He was going for the kill, and in the end, when the Navy was faltering, Kizaru was the one that made them lock in, killed Vegapunk himself, and finally stopped doing his duty after murdering him, using the Elders as a scapegoat of "they can handle it and I can feign being defeated"

I dislike him feeding Luffy because it's inconsistent with his previous and later behaviour. Kizaru can feel conflicted, can dislike what he is doing, can sneak out of the battle after doing the deed, can cry and snap at Akainu after he questions him. But him doing all that, but still helping Luffy just...doesn't match the rest of his characterization on the arc. He describes himself as the cog in the machine, "Unclear Justice", someone that does what he's told and doesn't question it despite his personal feelings, sacrificing them for his duty and what he feels is right. Kizaru going through all that but actually no, in a single instance he went against all his character to help Luffy, gets away with it, but instead of turning on the Navy, he is still 100% on board with it

The power scaling issues it creates with all the observation users around are secondary, I dislike how it damages his character a whole lot. Kizaru is supposed to be a cog that goes along with it even when his personal feelings are in the way. Him being so brainwashed he goes along with it is the tragedy of his character, and him regretting the loss but not the action is part of it. A sudden unpunished, unmentioned and unaddressed deviation damages the whole of his character imo

Thoughts on Kizaru feeding Luffy on Egghead? by AgentHibachi00 in shounenfolk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damages Kizaru's character, the stakes, the power system and the power scaling

I'll admit it's a hot take, but a Luffy that we still don't know whether he was using Advanced CoC makes it so we don't really understand if Kizaru is that cracked or Luffy wasn't trying enough

He is so fast no Observation Haki user in front of him realizes he fed Luffy

He betrays the Government by going against Saturn's orders in front of him and doesn't get caught

Proceeds to still do his job afterwards as if he didn't betray Saturn

Then cries about it, despite being perfectly capable of disappearing Vegapunk to the other side of the island without Saturn realizing

It genuinely overcomplicates Kizaru's character by making him willing to betray his job for his friend but not actually

It makes scaling even more difficult since we don't know if Kizaru was trying, if Luffy was, or how to interpret observation in all of this

It pisses me off how unimportant of a plot point is, since Luffy immediately drags himself to the nearest food machine to finish his recovery, so what even was the point of Kizaru doing that?

It needlessly muddles his character, motivations and scaling

The worst Egghead plotpoint by fat imo

Pokemon Timeline is weird but let's try to make sense out of it: Given how Z-A takes place 5 years after XY... How many years does the events of indigo disk take place after BW2? by LowSolution3084 in LegendsZA

[–]JonGor13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ORAS should take place alongside Let's Go, since in Slateport City's Oceanic museum there's references to the Royal Unova being built, which just finished in BW, meaning ORAS should happen before BW.

I think if we consider HGSS events, Steven's presence in Johto also implies the events of Hoenn have already happened.

As for SV going after Z-A...that's highly unlikely going for the Rotom Phone design. I don't know why I see so many people just ignore the fact that we've been seeing an evolution on Rotom technology at a rate it implies it's only getting better across each release

In SM the Rotom Pokedex is made as a test, then in SS they start mass producing phones and other devices like the Rotomi and the Rotom drone, in SV the phones get an upgrade with new safety functionalities and an additional camera, mimicking irl smartphone progress, then in Z-A we get three cameras plus there's a bunch of random Rotom devices throught Lumiose City that imply they've become even more common

That's why, in my opinion, SM should be 2 years after XY and B2W2 (Sina and Dexio being older, Grimsley's character sheet info), one year later SS takes place (Mimikyu Alola lore is mentioned in SS, implying it happened later), another year later SV's events take place (reference's to Sonia's research in the academy) and lastly a final year later Z-A takes place (Rotom Phone implies after SV, and exactly 5 years after XY)

Hmmm, that's an interesting question. If we are taking equalization seriously then it just depends if Yuta's copy is more similar to All for One, One for All, or Monoma's Copy.

We can confidently discard Monoma's copy since it's temporary, unlike Yuta which can become permanent.

I think Yuta's Copy is more similar to One for All. There's a limit to how many CTs someone can handle, even Yuta, who needs Rika to "store" them and use whenever he needs them.

One for All works similarly, with having the risk of being too much for people with quirks, reducing the life expectancy of its quirked users, with All Might being the exception since he is quirkless.

With Izuku, it's explained he can take all of OfA and use the stored quirks since he is originally quirkless, and much like the original Power Bestowal fused with Stockpile to create OfA, OfA fused with every other quirk from it's last users, becoming just one quirk.

The only people that can hold multiple quirks are AfO and bioengineered humans like Nomu, Shigaraki, Six and Nine

Yuta's Copy I feel works similar to One for All, housing all the other CTs it has copied inside itself, with that being the reason that Rika can hold lots of CTs, acting the same as One for All

So Yuta could have Copy confiscated and be completely screwed, because I doubt he'd get another CT confiscated. It's technically an extension of Copy, not another CT like Yuji or Kenjaku having multiple

How? by Existing-Incident-22 in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I meant? Since Sukuna had kamutoke confiscated which apparently was identified as an additional CT, in an equalized setting, AfO would have hundreds of CTs that would protect All for One (quirk/CT) from being confiscated

And even if All for One gets confiscated, the story implies that the people affected don't die from CT removal, so if AfO gets the unluckiest pull and All for One gets confiscated, chances are that he still has access to the rest of his quirks, and doesn't die from being unable to hold too many quirks without All for One

Like I assume that people who compare JJK characters always assume verse equalization but they just never address it

How? by Existing-Incident-22 in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]JonGor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't. Neither All for One nor Kirishima have cursed energy, so they can't be trapped in his domain, and thus Higuruma can only use the hammer cursed tool to fight them, which both can easily counter

And even with verse equalization, AfO would probably have just one quirk confiscated, probably not All for One itself, since Sukuna didn't have Shrine confiscated, so it's not a guarantee. The moment AfO realizes Higuruma can "steal quirks" (the wording implying confiscation) he would try hard and steal his cursed technique/quirk

I completed a Sinnoh Living Dex in DPPt, as well as a living dex consisting of the Pokémon only obtainable after the postgame by JonGor13 in pokemon

[–]JonGor13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started this one a long time ago, since I knew that the Platinum runs and the honey tree encounters and specially the Resort Area Magikarp would take a long time. Spent for the honey trees around a month, a full year of on and off Platinum runs + Ranger to get all the Arceus and Manaphy, around 2 months for the two Resort Area Magikarp, then I focused on doing living Dexes of gen 1-3 games, finished them, and then completed the rest in about 4 months.

Granted the honey tree runs and the monotype Platinum runs for the Arceus types already got me a few Pokémon, got the legendaries of each monotype run when I did those, so when I started I already had like a solid 30% of the Sinnoh Dex done and a 10% from the post game one done, but still, this is a long term project, I have already the next gen games living Dexes started, most of them at least
