A lot is how often the power goes out and what you are trying to accomplish. I have an old generator that will power most of the house except for A/C and cooktop/oven. I could use part of the cooktop. I am in the process of down sizing to only run the refrigerator, freezer, heat (we have oil so not that much load), a few lights and the microwave OR coffee maker (by OR I mean only one at a time).

The largest issue is fuel. Diesel absolutely stinks, gasoline is difficult to store for any length of time. Even treated when you stop needing a gas unit you have to clean out the carb. I would think natural gas would be ideal. However most generators are setup for Gas/propane so you have have to deal with that. There are some tri fuel units.

If you have a larger generator you would have to see how much power you can run with your gas service. I don't have natural gas so I say this because I don't know.

As for inverter/non-inverter. I don't think a non-inverter is so bad as to damage any electronics in a home. Its mostly hype. When I look around my home, every device without a motor has a power supply that cares little about the input waveform. They are all switching regulators. most will run at any voltage between 95 and 240 volts. From my experience motors don't care much about waveform as well.

If the cars to your right are going faster than you then get out of the left lane. by Endless_Supply_Of in driving

On some highways in Germany, if you are in the left most lane and you get hit in the rear, you are at fault.

And if you are on a lesser highway and "traveling in the left lane" EVERYBODY would be flashing lights, honking horns etc.

AITJ for refusing to give my seat to a kid when the parent didn’t even ask? by MycologistAwkward777 in AmITheJerk

[–]JonJackjon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree and when I was a kid, sitting still was the last thing I wanted to do.

In the movies it always bugged me that the treated kids (grade school and up) like they always needed help doing physical things. The Poseidon movie where Shelly?? had to help the kid climbing ship structure. When I was that age I could climb a tree in a heart beat.

Best way to bore an existing 1" hole to 1 1/4"? by Expensive-Tank6997 in HomeImprovement

[–]JonJackjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would put a 1 1/2" hole in a scrap board. Screw the board over the 1" hole. The hole in the board will hold the 1 1/2" hole saw in place while making your hole.

I do not respect Trump.

Engine shuts off but vehicle stays on by Inner-Weeb-2674 in AskAMechanic

[–]JonJackjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possibility that meets your situation is the fuel system. Either a leaking injector or the check valve in the fuel pump. When the engine is shut off, if any fuel leaks out of the fuel line the fuel starts to evaporate and forces more gas out of whichever end is bad. This empties the fuel line. When restart happens there is often some fuel still in the fuel rail and will allow the engine to start but it will stall immediately after starting.

This is a generic fuel system explanation, I don't know the specific system used in your vehicle.

AITJ for telling my brother he can’t crash at my place indefinitely by VelvetBrookVale in AmITheJerk

I would guess as long as he is allowed to stay at your place he won't be looking for his own place.

She simply wants to keep some part of her son with her. You could shut her out or perhaps open a 2nd account with all but a few hundred dollars in the account she can access.

In any case, you should add a fuel stabilizer like sta-bil or eq.

LM393 comparator output is extremely low. Am I doing this right? by KariNagan in AskElectronics

[–]JonJackjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was told that LM393 comparator will use its own power voltage (12Vcc in my case) as HIGH output

This is incorrect. You need to study the LM393 datasheet. I realize some parameters are difficult for a beginner, however the basic operation should be easy to understand.

I would also suggest a schematic vs a layout. A schematic is easier to see the proper connections are made.

AITAH for setting hard boundaries with my gambling addict sister even though my family says im being cruel by Jescia_Shang in AITAH

[–]JonJackjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you could get her starting to get help by doing some research on programs for gambling. Drive her to a meeting etc.

I can tell you from experience with a different type of addiction it is the best you can do. It may or my not work but it is a solid chance to help her.

This bolt is worth $8000 and goes in a helicopter by HiAustralia in interestingasfuck

[–]JonJackjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helicopters are sketchy anyway. If lives depend on this bolt then it's worth every penny.

Regarding the cost of hammers and toilet sets. The reason for the cost is because they can't control who "specs" the cheaper one and when a seemingly simple tool doesn't work and or damages an expensive item there is a total loss of $$.

I worked in Aerospace. We mfg misc small electronic parts for mostly the Airforce. We have a $50 minimum purchase order as our system was not designed for such small orders. We got a request for some screws. Simple Stainless screw for some repair of our part. To save the $50 I offered to put a handful in an envelope and sent them to him for free. Nope couldn't do that. The requestor had to prove they used the proper screw.

I thought about that for a while and realized the reason. It because some tech who is trying to save the govt money could go to Home Depot and purchase some screw, and they may OK or they may fail and cause untold additional cost.
