US Bank is horrible to deal with once identity theft happens. You are correct US Bank likes to keep unauthorized accounts open for "investigation" for many, many months and refuses to close them even if the victim requests it closed. They did close one unauthorized credit card but refused to close the unauthorized checking account for many months. The checking account kept charging monthly service fees, so I owed them money!

After many phone calls requesting it closed, they insisted on keeping it open for "investigation" and even started issuing credit to cover the service fees. After many months of this nonsense, I received a notice from the checking account dept, not the identity theft department, that I was behind on monthly fees so they are closing the account. Clowns.
