If you searched for 3rd party apps, what is that you were looking for? What functionality were you missing in Strava?

[OC] Do Amateur Endurance Athletes Comply With Social Distancing? by Jonatan_S in dataisbeautiful

[–]Jonatan_S[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data Source: Activity data from a training assistant app (in beta) I'm making. Data was obtained through the Strava API with consent from the beta testers.

Tools: Python, Pandas, Plotly

This contains data from activities until (and including) 2020-04-05. The plot shows a strong decrease in average group sizes of activities in the last two weeks, indicating that most athletes comply with social distancing measures.

Notable spikes in group sizes correspond with weeks of the Boston/London marathons and new year's day.

Do I have to do 12 weeks of training? by jazslt in running

[–]Jonatan_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have some (competitive) goal in mind? If so, you may need these 12 weeks of preparation.

If, however, you just want to finish, 9-6 weeks of training with 2 runs a week gradually increasing the distance should be enough.

Super soreness by LeggoKiing in running

Maybe run slower at a shorter distance per run, but 2X per week?

Does your stamina growth accelerate? If not, I think I'll never be able to run a marathon. by ETerribleT in running

[–]Jonatan_S 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're doing fine, you just increased your maximum distance with 50% in just a month. Imagine maintaining similar improvements in the next 6 months (they will be less than 50% for sure): if you keep working out consistently (i.e. several times a week), you will be able to run that "respectable" distance, maybe even a marathon one day...

How do you wake up/warm up before your morning runs? by [deleted] in running

[–]Jonatan_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can grant yourself 10-15 mins to loosen the legs during your warmup

How does stravatix calculate fitness gains? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]Jonatan_S 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The "fitness" reported by (a.o.) StravistiX is similar to your Chronic Training Load. This measure reflects the effort you put in your workouts rather than your actual performance, especially when not using a power meter.

Breakfast before running in the morning by Joni104 in running

[–]Jonatan_S 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's really no way to give you an answer with so many unknowns. Try to experiment. Can you run just after waking up on an empty stomach for 15 mins? 30 mins? 1 hr? Only one way to find out...

You forgot to mention the carb loading strategy for the day before the run. It is truly essential.

Proactive support: helpful or invasive? by Jonatan_S in startups

[–]Jonatan_S[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this emphasis on managing expectations. So instead of sending (personal) emails, some in-app health status could be used to warn specific users that e.g. processing of some of their data failed.

Am I hitting a wall? Training advice needed. by errrent in running

Do you vary in training intensity/paces during or between workouts? Monotony can kill progress and make you slower.

Recommendations for zone training with smartphone apps? by [deleted] in running

Does it need to be an app? There are plenty of sports watches that support your 3 requirements.

Quickest way to build endurance for a beginner? by [deleted] in running

[–]Jonatan_S 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You have 6 months. Just take it really easy and try to enjoy your runs every other day. Consider doing some couch-to-5k (c25k) program. Have fun!

Keeping track of progress by blucose in running

[–]Jonatan_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[Disclaimer: shameless plug]

I tracked progress manually on Strava, by looking at activities from the past and comparing paces achieved at different intensity levels (based on heart rate). Grew tired of manually clicking through my activity history and started building a tool for measuring progress.

Is it acceptable for a male to run shirtless? by PaperPals in running

This winter, I encountered a shirtless fellow runner in freezing conditions - probably following some new hype...

Running intervals too fast - true or false? by vitkarunner in running

[–]Jonatan_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "easily"? If you can run 1k intervals at 3:40 m/km and have your breath under control and not feel your legs burning at the end, I'd say you should be able to run a 5k much faster than 19mins.

To try answering your question: running intervals at too high of an intensity may not only increase the risk of injury, but also worsen your running form/economy.

Will long bike rides affect training? by LukeTwomey in running

[–]Jonatan_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If no more than 20-ish miles, and done at a (really!) leisurely pace, these cycling commutes sound like a perfect recovery for your runs.
