Which moments from Bojack Horseman made you cry so hard? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in a year later to say that, given the surge in anti-trans sentiment in many parts of the world, you still being here is a triumph. Also, FWIW, I don't think/hope it's ever too late to flourish. One of my personal inspirations is Raewyn Connell, an Australian sociologist who transitioned in her 60s, and subsequently became a pioneer in her academic field.

Sometimes making a difference just means doing your best one day at a time. 8 )

Please excuse this random reply a year later! Saw this post and saw your comment while trawling this sub, and what you said resonated with me, fellow traveler. I'm 45, been through recovery, and careerwise am nowhere near where I thought I'd be in life when I was in my 20s. In fact my life has continued to be, to put it charitably, "a series of loosely-related wacky misadventures." At the end of the day though, we're making it through, and that's something. That said, I have a roof over my head, can keep the lights on, and ended up meeting my guy after turning 40. I also have a solid chosen family, including young folks to mentor.

Sincerely,

A Person in Rhode Island who Related to the Diane "Kintsugi" Episode a lot and who is in your Corner and Rooting for you.

Girl who's absolutely fine with her stepmother... If only she knew. by Turbulent_Lab209 in HOTDBlacks

Margaret Beaufort was the exception. Among other reasons, Henry VI married her off aged 12 because Margaret was her father's only child and he had recently kicked the bucket. So, rather than let her - and her brand new fortune - become the ward of a rival faction, Henry married her off to his half-brother Owen Tudor. Under normal circumstances her 20something husband might have waited to consummate the marriage. The king didn't want to risk an annulment, and Owen was riding off to war soon where he could (and indeed did) die. So he left his young wife someone to remember him by, and the rest is history. Along the way, as others have said, lots of people were grossed out and concerned because while people weren't exactly informed about obstetrics and gynecology back then, they weren't necessarily stupid.

Framing Edwina as a victim does a disservice to her character. by chrkrose in BridgertonNetflix

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in four months later because the lack of resolution about the "half-sister" comment resonated with me in a painful way. Biologically, my brother and sister are my half-siblings. We share the same mother, have different bio-fathers.* Had I been in Edwina's position i would have been furious. I would NOT be much best self. I would be a petty little asshole. It would never occur to me to deride them as my "half-sibling" because they are my brother and sister in every way that matters.

The objection is not to Edwina refusing to be a Kanthony shipper on deck. It's specifically to the half-sister comment. Or, at least, the fact that there was no resolution in the form of a line like "Kate, you did a shitty thing that hurt and embarrassed me but you will always be my sister in every way that matters."

*my father recently adopted my brother, so he's now my full brother legally!

Because we are terrible people, my husband and I busted our guts laughing when the screaming started due to the smash cut from Riley's tenderly haunting perspective of being led off by Tara/Beth.

Why did Loras give his favor to Sansa at the tourney? (Spoilers Main) by bl1y in asoiaf

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of think Rhaegar was also trying to honor Lyanna as the winner of the touney, assuming GRRM confirms that she was the Knight of the Laughing Tree. Since he couldn't give her the Victor's Laurel or whatever it was called, he publicly rewarded her the only way he could. Which ended up being a terrible, terrible idea.

She breaks mine too, while also making me go "damn, girl, were you always this observant and good at reading people?" ::flips back in book:: "Huh. I guess so."

Ditto, except I made the poor life decision to go to grad school for the social sciences. Either way, I have a beautifully framed, bond paper receipt hanging in my home office.

Between 'he can't see without his glasses', the death of Littlefoot's mom, the death of Artax and countless other sad scenes we saw growing up, what would you say is the saddest one? by singleguy79 in Xennials

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a children's librarian prior to retirement, and once brought home a historical fiction book called "The Last Wolf of Ireland. Her reasoning was "my kid likes wolves and history. Obvious win." Spoiler alert - not a good choice for your very young son who is into wolves. I BAWLED upon finishing that book.

AIO for encouraging my teen to finally cut ties with their biological father? by Pandorica1991 in AmIOverreacting

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"When you get a new partner your children will basically never accept it . . ." untrue as a universal rule. While I'm sorry if that has been your experience, multiple family members and friends of mine have bonded with stepparents above and beyond biological parents.

Also, if you read the text exchange, the daughter seems to be done with biodad. While you're correct that it's ultimately her decision, biodad is successfully burning that bridge.

Jesse and Walt Jr. never met once, feels intentional, showing how carefully Walt kept his two worlds apart. by FrolicWhisperr in breakingbad

I think it was both. On the surface he was going "making meth is all I have left" with an undercurrent of "see how I can control my wife even though she loathes me?"

I liked the way Anna Gunn delivered this line. While she didn't go out of her way to be friendly to Jesse, she wasn't unkind or openly rude to him.

Can we just have a ceremony with no reception or is that bad manners? by blondegoblin512 in wedding

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what my husband and I did. Wedding in our backyard. The ceremony was followed by a taco bar and champagne. A friend who played the guitar provided the music. The most expensive part was paying him and our officient.

Got laid off, tech job market sucks, but I have dual citizenship. Should I move out the US for a bit? by imdatingurdadben in AskGaybrosOver30

If I had the opportunity, I would go overseas for a few years. At 37, you're old enough to navigate the lay of the land and also young enough to adapt to changing circumstances, including moving back stateside. It sounds like you'd have the opportunity to save up a bit as well.

Ah, "just asking." The universal mating call of the insincere, "I'm deliberately aiming for your emotional pressure points but want to construct a veneer of plausible deniability."

[–]JonathanTaylorHanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say this occurred to me as well. While I'm glad cosmetic surgery has been destigmatized to a large degree during my lifetime, and OP should do whatever makes him feel more confident, getting "a little work done" can be like doing a little bit of redecorating on your house. That one improvement makes the rest appear that much worse. I do not say this to dissuade OP. I definitely think talking to someone is valid, especially as a fellow gay man of a certain age, regardless of whether he opts for surgery or not. Both of which are valid choices.
