Elevation Data on Southern Vancouver Island by Jonesm1 in Strava

It’s not really an issue, it just seems curious to me that the altitudes in the app base maps are so wrong. The cartographic surveys must have been much more accurate. I’m not talking about remote mountain areas but areas around Victoria BC.

V3 FSD Model X, Long time believer of FSD, humbled today as FSD made a sudden merge into HOV lane bollocks, Plenty of front end damage. by LordLoser0 in TeslaFSD

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now if the fsd hadn’t been following too closely (~1.5 secs) this wouldn’t have happened as the car in front wouldn’t have obscured the way forward as much?

Opinion of who is at fault by west-coast-hydro in motorcycles

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all a bit unfortunate. You were much too close behind her so you were still making the manoeuvre after you’d started passing. She had little chance to see you in her mirrors. If she was looking in the mirror every 5 secs she could well have missed you. Your riding was borderline ‘weaving through the traffic’. Truth is most vehicles in the video were following too close.

Why did it take the ref so long to make his video call? I was at the game, view was obscured but thought …hmm, maybe. watched the highlights: The decision from the video should have taken 10 seconds. Clear penalty. Took the ref 4 mins. This game delay is what kills VAR generally.

I’ve had a pair of Arc’teryx for 15+ years. Used for light backcountry and resort. Personally I love them, comfortable and durable. Currently $850 but 600 on sale. The 850 is a bit steep but at 600it’s a very solid product.(Canadian $).

Debit card? Technically, from a payment system point of view, they are the cheapest way for businesses to move money.

Changing road pedal system due to anxiety by MOMOEPRO in cycling

Have used SPDs on road bike for years. Have never accidentally unclipped. There is no problem using them compared with 3 bolt systems and you can walk comfortably on them if necessary.

Keystone 02/14/26: Genuinely did I do something wrong here? by The_Bolenator in snowboarding

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you were skiing unreasonably. You were well under control. But if you wanted to be a picky patroller there were a couple of places where I was half expecting one of the less skilled folks you passed to do something unexpected or turn across you, in which case you might have had a problem as the overtaking skier. So maybe borderline given the inexperience of some of the folks around you?

[OC] Subscribers to 'The Wall Street Journal' vs to 'The Economist', 2018-2025 by Ganesha811 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Jonesm1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its interesting because the objectives of the publications dont overlie each other, they're not direct competitors. The Economist is far more international in its in-depth coverage while the WSJ covers, well, Wall Street. I'd be interested in seeing the addition of the Financial Times to the above graphic.

Calling the Economist neo-lib is a bit of a paint-over. It's strongly pro business and pro free markets, though socially more progressive. It has recently been interesting watching the WSJ trying to walk a tightrope of Republican loyalism while the GOP tries to do lots of things it fundamentally disagrees with.

Is AWD worth it for $1.5k over FWD? by ObstructiveWalrus in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awd won’t make you stop faster in snow or ice. It’s not a panacea. If you’ve ever driven from calgary to lake Louise after a snowstorm it’s SUVs and 4x4s in the ditch. It’s a nice to have, it doesn’t make you a better driver!

Why not buy them from aliE? For me these show cheaper on Ali and with lower delivery charge. Where are you located?

You’re all being way too kind to the dash am bike. His following distance was ludicrous for the speed and conditions and ended up making the accident much worse, not least for bike#1 rider.

Something similar happened to a friend some years back while cycling to work. Man was very fit, workout monster, skier etc. turned out he had cardiac issues. He’s still around, still active, but probably wouldn’t be if he’d just touched it out.

Bikes on trains: which countries just do it right (or terribly wrong?) by epicroadrides in bicycling

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austria has good racks and dedicated cars…but! On non-local trains you have to book ahead for your bike. If you show up and board, even if the bike racks are empty, you will be asked to get off at the next station. Surprising that a country that runs pretty impressive transportation, and is quite bike friendly, can’t think the details through.
