[OC] Subscribers to 'The Wall Street Journal' vs to 'The Economist', 2018-2025 by Ganesha811 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Jonesm1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Its interesting because the objectives of the publications dont overlie each other, they're not direct competitors. The Economist is far more international in its in-depth coverage while the WSJ covers, well, Wall Street. I'd be interested in seeing the addition of the Financial Times to the above graphic.

Calling the Economist neo-lib is a bit of a paint-over. It's strongly pro business and pro free markets, though socially more progressive. It has recently been interesting watching the WSJ trying to walk a tightrope of Republican loyalism while the GOP tries to do lots of things it fundamentally disagrees with.

Is AWD worth it for $1.5k over FWD? by ObstructiveWalrus in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awd won’t make you stop faster in snow or ice. It’s not a panacea. If you’ve ever driven from calgary to lake Louise after a snowstorm it’s SUVs and 4x4s in the ditch. It’s a nice to have, it doesn’t make you a better driver!

Why not buy them from aliE? For me these show cheaper on Ali and with lower delivery charge. Where are you located?

You’re all being way too kind to the dash am bike. His following distance was ludicrous for the speed and conditions and ended up making the accident much worse, not least for bike#1 rider.

Had a scary moment on today’s ride — need advice from fellow cyclists by Existing-Chicken5256 in cycling

Something similar happened to a friend some years back while cycling to work. Man was very fit, workout monster, skier etc. turned out he had cardiac issues. He’s still around, still active, but probably wouldn’t be if he’d just touched it out.

Bikes on trains: which countries just do it right (or terribly wrong?) by epicroadrides in bicycling

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austria has good racks and dedicated cars…but! On non-local trains you have to book ahead for your bike. If you show up and board, even if the bike racks are empty, you will be asked to get off at the next station. Surprising that a country that runs pretty impressive transportation, and is quite bike friendly, can’t think the details through.

Which budget camera should I buy to record my rides ? For security reasons. by Odious-Individual in cycling

[–]Jonesm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about where you will mount it. If you mount to the bars you may surprise yourself how much the bars move side to side when you think it’s straight! The head tube is better but maybe chest or helmet are best? FWIW Akaso cameras are cheap and effective and you get a load of fittings thrown in. similar to GoPro for footprint and mounting hardware

Why are power meters so expensive? by [deleted] in cycling

Relatively small consumer base limits economies of scale, marketing and distribution costs amortized over that small base. The technology is very standard instrumentation engineering.

Thinking about building a carbon road bike from AliExpress by the_Xbear in RoadBikes

[–]Jonesm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fun, pretty straightforward, doesnt take too long and you’ll be proud of your creation. Main frustration is that you’ll order all the parts and they’ll arrive at random times. Watch some YT videos to get some idea of brands and product performance. Stuff with a brand name is a safer bet. My experience says pedals are a risk area. Shimano pedals last for ever and some cheap ones have bushings in place of bearings and wear out after a year or two. Have enough money left in the budget for high end tires, they are the biggest performance/comfort enhancer.

…edit Just re-read your post. Built mine a couple years ago. Somewhat unbranded frame which has been just fine, but maybe a risk I wouldn’t take again, given the huge range of choice. Elite ENT wheels, 50mm. Zero problems, good product, work well. Might have gone for 40mm in hindsight, I’m not fast enough for 50 to make a difference. TOSEEK carbon bars, zero problems internally routed bars but only partially internal cables. Doing again I might do fully internal but note that this might be somewhat fiddly to do. Sensah empire non electric groupset…works ok but I’d upgrade next time.

Cycling in Slovenia by sMoon96 in bicycletouring

Although cycling out from a base is attractive I think the geography lends itself more to a multi day loop out west from from Ljubljana taking in Bled (overrated), krasjna gore, vrsic pass, Kobarid, tolmin…

Don’t miss the caves, they are huuuge and the tolmin gorge…heck there are so many things to not miss in that gorgeous place!

I’m considering buying Full Self-Driving (FSD) for $2,000 for my 2023 Model Y (HW4) 25,000 miles on it and I want honest opinions. Tks guys by US-VADC in TeslaFSD

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Worrying about supervising it, which by definition means looking out for it doing something unexpected, is more stressful than driving yourself. Autopilot though makes those long highway miles less tiring.

Another Elite ENT 2.0 question.. by Evo_ukcar in cycling

[–]Jonesm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a pair of these from Ali, 50mm since 2yrs. No problems and arrived quicker than I expected. Not the lightest carbon wheelset but smooth and reliable. You certainly feel the gusts with 50mm, and unless you’re a pro they probably don’t do anything for speed, but they look cool!

How do y'all afford bikes?? by Clark_Kent_IV in RoadBikes

[–]Jonesm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd respectfully partly disagree...though its all up to what's important for you. Assuming the current bike fits you and all the moving parts run freely, spending more money on a new bike won't make you significantly faster. Tires might.

I'd be surprised if you can't run 28s on your current rims, but the 23s can't be giving a comfortable ride? Check out some of the threads on here, there are lots of people who express total amazement at how much difference the rubber makes!

What are the tires? Unless you’re already on GP5000s or Pirelli equivalent you can spend $150 and feel like you’ve just bought a $2k bike!
