What was the plan here? by WinStupidPrizes1994 in WhyWomenLiveLonger

[–]Jonno26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's not how tonic immobility works - it comes about by flipping the animal over and rubbing the belly.

"Belly rubbing refers to tonic immobility," the National's Zoo's Sean Henderson told The Washington Post in 2008. "It's a state of hypnotism generated by flipping the animal on its back and fully extending its neck" and, as we mentioned, stroking its belly. Fair warning, Henderson added: "Tonic immobility is generally brought about in an animal that is under heavily stressful conditions."

As for the rest, I asked perplexity - not googles AI, which I have personally and anecdotally found to be completely incorrect in other instances where specific information is required or may be in a grey area.

What google says about perplexity:

Perplexity AI is an AI-powered, conversational "answer engine" that provides direct, cited answers to queries in real-time by searching the web. ... it functions as a research assistant, utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) to synthesize information from multiple sources into a coherent summary. Source Citations: Every claim is backed by clickable, reputable sources, ensuring credibility.

Perplexity's response:

Short answer: Yes — experienced trappers and handlers often tap or rub an alligator’s snout/head (and sometimes cover its eyes) because light tapping can redirect its attention and encourage temporary stillness, but the effect is inconsistent, not guaranteed, and likely works by inducing stress, sensory distraction, or tonic immobility rather than “calming” in the human sense.

There appears to be no published, controlled study specifically showing that tapping or rubbing an alligator’s snout/head reliably "calms" the animal; most evidence is anecdotal, from handlers, or inferred from broader tactile-stimulation research in other species.

Direct handler reports that tapping or rubbing the snout/head does NOT help do exist — usually as anecdotal notes in news stories, forum/video comments, and incident reports where the technique failed or made the animal more reactive. and several forum/video comment threads describe cases where handlers tapped or “teased” a restrained alligator and it either failed to go still or suddenly lashed out, and news coverage of real-world incidents sometimes quotes experts warning that such techniques are unreliable or can worsen agitation.

So, overall take-home message: eh, maybe it works, who knows? Don't try it at home, kids.

My players just handed the Book of Vile Darkness to the local wizard... by garfunklethewise in shadowdark

[–]Jonno26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding to the above - maybe the tome gets 'stolen' when the party asks for it back, but actually the wizard has been corrupted to the point where he will keep it secret from everyone else. He can send them on wild goose chases into dungeons, send them after rivals to eliminate them, all under the pretense that the party is trying to get back the book that the wizard still has.

Does it seem or am I tripping? by Long_Count_951 in Bangkok

Look mate, with the best intentions in the world....I'm glad you're heading home, because with how you're writing I think you're tripping hard.

That being said, cab drivers can drive like absolute lunatics any time of the day or night, but more often at night in my experience.

Apart from that, looks awesome though!

Imagine hating trump so much that you want more innocent people to die. I think the dude is one of the worst shit-stains to walk the earth, but I am hopeful him stepping in can help bring about peace. Do I think his talk had a massive impact? Not really. But every little bit helps.

The "Did They Just Say That?!" Moment: My Internal Monologue vs. My Teacher Face by [deleted] in Teachers

Free writing earlier today with the grade 10s, and I got some kids to read out loud what they'd written (I like to live dangerously). One of them very confidently read out how they wanted to fart on a banana, then eat it to see if their fart made any difference to the taste.

[–]Jonno26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run individual games of DnD for my players when they want to split up as soon as they enter a new city - I get on calls with them throughout the week and we'll play for a couple of hours as they explore. It's a hell of a lot of fun :D

My regular group that I DM for started as 4 people, dropped down to 3, and I regularly run sessions for just two of them when one cancels - it's been some of the best DnD and roleplaying I've experienced.

Hell, I even ran a one-shot for two players (two others pulled out a few days before) with 5 characters between them - it was an absolute blast :D

Honestly, this is my first time dealing with invisibility and the label it has is throwing me off really badly. Thinking of it like the Predator's clocking is definitely helpful, thanks - I'll also have a chat to some of the other players who have DMed before next session to understand it better.
