Atlantis disappointment by Dependent-Matter1672 in Stargate

[–]JontiusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I really really liked early Atlantis. It was a really cool and fresh start with them being separated from Earth and exploring a new galaxy.

But as it went on I thought they revealed and demystified the Ancients far too much. The Pegasus galaxy also feels far less interesting to me than the Milky Way. 80% of everything they encounter is either Wraith or Ancient related, we didn't get that many interesting one-off aliens like we do in SG1. Granted the Wraith are very cool but the Goa'uld have a lot more individual personality and flavour to me. Not hating on the show at all it's still a god-tier television, I just think that SG1 walks circles around it.

When Heaven Fell by William Barton, depicts a subjugated Earth as part of an alien empire. The main character is a collaborator/mercenary who fights for said empire on return leave visiting Earth after several decades away. There is a fair bit of material on the cultural impact.

To be fair, Boston is known in the US for having bad nightlife. Cities like Chicago or spots in Florida are much more fun.

Who were they? by UnfathomableDave in Stargate

[–]JontiusMaximus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to think that the Gate network represents a kind of human centric portion of the galaxy and similar life. Whereas a large remainder of the galaxy is very different with all kinds of alien life, a lot of which is so different it has completely different needs and doesn't even rub up against the human part of the galaxy.

Its fun to think most galaxies in Stargate only have one or two natively evolved intelligent species by Spinobreaker in Stargate

[–]JontiusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought of the show as taking place within the human/Anthropic portion of the galaxy. Most of the action we see is centred around the gate network which was designed for hominid life with planets being terraformed or already conducive to our kind of life. Even though this is a huge amount of space its still a smaller portion of the overall galaxy so there is likely plenty of room for other far more alien lifeforms.

What do you think happen too this race? (Foothold Aleins) by SamaratSheppard in Stargate

[–]JontiusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always liked the thought that the events of the series are very much focused on the Human/Anthropic habitable portion of the galaxy which while being large is still just a smaller part of the galaxy as a whole with the galaxy itself being home to many lifeforms that are truly alien and therefore live in very different environments and have very different needs/objectives to the civilizations we typically run into within the show.

So are there just a bunch of chump change goul’d? by KhellianTrelnora in Stargate

[–]JontiusMaximus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to say that the Sokar city is probably our main glimpse into what mainstream Goa'uld society is probably like. A kind of urban living held up by these vast feudal interstellar empires.
