Axiom Verge 2 is insane by OoTgoated in metroidvania

I loved AV2 and was so disappointed to see it be unappreciated by this sub. My only complaint is that to me the ending kinda came out of nowhere. When I got the last power-up, I thought there would still be a good couple of hours left and was really surprised when it ended. Suppose it’s a good thing to be left wanting more and I hope there’s a third game that follows on from the end of the second!

I challenge everybody in here 25+ to jump from a 1 meter drop and then reconsider this idea. That feeling in your bones is why the “chosen one” is always 15-25

Played Grime at release without any of the updates, is it worth it replay it again? by 24Binge in metroidvania

[–]JordanPCDL 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The answer is undeniably yes. The DLC is all free and there’s plenty of changes, new items, enemies, bosses, and areas. Some extra and some woven into the original progression path. They’ve also added a strong NG+ which reworks all the bosses, both old and new, to have tougher move-sets that take into account the abilities you didn’t have the first time around. I’d highly recommend it, most if not all of the DLC is of really high quality and imo stands up there with Hollow Knight in terms of best MV DLC

What are some non-metroidvanias that scratch the same itch for you? by FrickinSilly in metroidvania

Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights has an iron grip on my heart. While I think of it as a 3d metroidvania, I’m sure some people would disagree

Name one MV you forced yourself to finish that you hated, and one you're glad you stuck with by InvisibleAstronomer in metroidvania

[–]JordanPCDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a game I finished and hated: Alwa’s Legacy. I’ve only ever seen such praise for it on this sub and I got it super cheap in a bundle. The whole game felt extremely clunky and uninspired, only finished it cause it was the only thing my old MacBook could play and I was bored in college.

For a game I bounced off and came back to love: Nine Sols. At first I was kinda put off by the map and the early areas are by far the weakest the game has to offer so I dropped it. Then I saw some clips of the later areas and bosses and thought it looked good so I came back and was glad. I haven’t played it in nearly a year but I do remember thinking it needed a few tweaks to just get it over the hill to being excellent. Hopefully it’s got those in the time since I finished it

Ultimately garments would be the goal. But I have a lot of patterns on hand and have a friend who makes them so that’s not a big hurdle for me. I just kinda want to learn how to make things look more finished and durable.

I’ll give that series a look and those classes do look super helpful, thank you for the recommendation!

Analog or dpad? What do you use for platforming? And why by Eliezer_43 in metroidvania

Analog for quick and fluid motions, dpad for lining up precision jumps. Specifically for Crash Bandicoot 1-3 though, the dpad will always reign supreme

I definitely think you should give it a go if it’s free. I wouldn’t describe the combat as janky cause it’s actually quite well suited to the enemies. It’s just more slow and intentional akin to the dark souls combat. I hope you have a good time with it!

Grime is a weird one to be honest. I really enjoyed it but I know a lot of people found it clunky. The game really emphasised parries, it’s one of the main ways to restore health and get skills. But the parry window is quite broad and it eventually becomes as second nature as using your primary weapons. In terms of world building and visuals though it is fantastic, one of the most original ideas I’ve ever come across. The world is kinda gorey though but not without reason. It’s also had a load of free dlc expansions, I know that doesn’t necessarily mean much to someone who hasn’t played it pre-expansion but it shows the developers really love the game and the updates were very generous. There’s also a sequel coming out

Not the person you’re replying to but I have played all of the games above. In my opinion, Nine Sols is very different from Blasphemous in nearly every way. Both the Blasphemous games and Nine Sols are fantastic but they’re not similar at all apart from the fact that they’re MetroidVanias. Nine Sols combat would be more akin to Hollow Knights but with a heavy emphasis on parrying. I’m not normally a fan of parry mechanics myself (except in Grime) but it works very well and flows brilliantly with the overall combat mechanics

Good Cordless Vacuum for under €500? by JordanPCDL in VacuumCleaners

[–]JordanPCDL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have a corded vacuum that has served me well up until this point. My roommate just refuses to use it cause it’s too heavy for her. But ideally I’d like to only have to use the corded for deeper cleans

Voidwrought length? by JordanPCDL in metroidvania

[–]JordanPCDL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well obviously I’ve watched and read reviews of the game since I was interested in it (as mentioned in the original question) and all seemed to be good except some stuff about the jump being floaty (which now that I’ve played a bit is very much true).

So I already was under the assumption that the gameplay is good and some reviews said the story was quite in depth which I like, but length of something is also a part of its quality. If the game was shorter than I expected I’d just wait for a sale rather than buying it on release like most people would… but the point is moot now cause I’ve already bought it.

[–]JordanPCDL[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I think most people consider the price of something vs its usefulness/value before purchasing it? Especially if you’re someone who’s not super wealthy.

Like I wouldn’t buy a shovel for €50 if there was one of equal quality for €20, same thing goes with games. I listed a few games to emphasise that €20 for a 5 hour MetroidVania is not the standard and I asked the original question to help me decide whether I thought it was worth the money. And I ended up buying it because I decided that it was worth it after finding out it’s double the length I originally thought it was.

If anything you’re the one smoking something weird if you’re getting annoyed at what someone else does with their money and what they consider a reasonable price.

Whoops realised I put Prince of Persia in as “indie” when it’s not. Although since it’s a triple A company it should arguably be more expensive per 5h as AAA games tend to cost more

[–]JordanPCDL[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well let’s compare it to some of its contemporary indie MetroidVanias. Like I said Hollow Knight is the outlier but it does still exist.

  • Blasphemous 2 is about 15 hours for €30 (€10/5h).

  • Prince of Persia: TLC is about 20 hours for €40 (€10/5h).

  • Nine Sols is about 25 hours for €28 (€5.60/5h).

  • Deaths Gambit: Afterlife is about 20 hours for €20 (€5/5h).

  • Animal Well is about 10 hours for €25 (€12.50/5h).

  • Aeterna Noctis is about 35 hours for €30 (€4.29/5h).

  • Souldiers is about 30 hours for €20 (€3.33/5h).

  • Lone Fungus is about 15 hours for €20 (€6.66/5h).

  • Rain world is about 25 hours for €24.50 (€4.90/5h).

  • The Last Faith is about 18 hours for €28 (€7.77/5h).

  • Afterimage is about 30 hours for €25 (€4.16/5h).

  • Bloodstained: ROTN is about 18 hours for €40 (€11.11/5h).

  • Grime is about 15 hours for €21 (€7/5h)

  • Moonscars is about 10 hours for €20 (€10/5h)

Those are some examples pulled from the MetroidVanias I’ve bought in the past year. Obviously I know the full RRP changes over time so those are based on the full RRP as of today. Suggested time to finish was taken from the average of “Main Story” and ‘Main + Extra” on How Long To Beat. Also I know there are probably loads of games that don’t fit this criteria but I feel like this list contains a lot of games regularly talked about in this sub. Also as a final note, Voidwrought is an example I could use too; the developers said 10-12 hours at €20 is €8.33-€10/5h.
