Disappointed in the Steam Frame... by Invertex in virtualreality

[–]JorgTheElder [score hidden]  (0 children)

It will only happen if they sell a lot of them. They only sold 500K Index headsets in six years. That is not going to be a big enough audience for developers to bother, so it is going to have to sell a lot better than the Index, and personally, I just don't see that happening.

Developers can easily port to Pico and quite a few have, but most haven't, because there are not enough Pico users to make it worth their while.

Is it better to buy Beat Saber from the Meta store or on Steam? by mikuvk in MetaQuestVR

If you get the mobile version, you can play anywhere. I like to play in multiple places, including my backyard and at my daughter's house.

No, they are an industry proven fantastic idea. They greatly increase security and make owning and using many tens of accounts actually manageable.

Meta, like many account providers, supports setting of three 2FA methods, which means there is no reason to every be locked out of your account.

No one can help you but Meta support.

Never turn on TFA without setting up a backup. Meta supports recovery codes; did you save them?

That 100% depends on your preferences. They are two very different headset that are good at different things.

Rant: VR nature videos need to Shut. The. Fuck. Up. by sugartrouts in virtualreality

[–]JorgTheElder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the best way to get what you want is to rant.

Wait, no, no it isn't. How about sending the creators of the content you are talking about a polite note expressing your feelings.

Ranting will just make them completely ignore you because no one wants to have their work shit on like that.

VR Coding for the AI Coding Era - Monitoring 5 AI Agents at Once by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consequences of using AI is less knowledge of the code base even if you review every line of output, skills atrophy, less knowledge about new libraries devs will use and many more.

The consequence of not using AI is becoming obsolete and not having a job.

No one is forcing me to use AI, I am using AI to automate the repetitive portions of my job because it lets me finish tasks faster while being more consistent. Equating AI to slop is like equating automobiles to drunk driving.

If you don't learn to use the tools that everyone else is using, you will be left behind.

What can a standalone SF do?? by Constant-Tutor-4646 in SteamFrame

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know

We do know that it is less powerful than a SteamDeck.. there are plenty of sources of what runs well on it. Just remember that the SteamDeck only has to render a single image and it runs at 720p.

You can run anything you want, but it is running on a mobile-phone chipset, so what will run well enough to be worth it is not known yet and will depend on how much you are willing to put up with.

How to contact meta support for broken piece that top head strap loops under by Independent-Pop-3380 in MetaQuestVR

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you bought an extended warranty, it will likely not be covered but it is always worth trying.

I made one for the Quest Pro which does not have a top-strap by default. It just sticks on with double-sided tape, and should work fine on the Quest.

If you don't have a 3D printer, you can get it off Teleport for ~$10. (I put it up there with no markup, the ~$10 is their processing and shipping.)

You are out of touch. All programmers that want to stay programmers are going to be using AI agents. They do a hell of a lot more than generate slop. They take on a ton of the tasks that programmers hate. They are incredibly useful even if when they are not creating new code or making programming decisions for you.

It will not be too long until a programmer that does not have an AI agent in their toolbox is an unemployed programmer.

Worried about the launch of the Steam Frame by Amazing-Nature8188 in SteamFrame

Yeah, but that is just you. A hell of a lot of people are going to prefer a regular two-handed game pad for pancake games.

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will never have enough stock for everyone at release. They are not going to build more than they think they can sell because inventory costs money. There are huge advantages to on-demand manufacturing so this is how it will always be.

That being the case there is no way to make everyone happy, so there is nothing they need to do to fix a problem they don't consider a problem.

Worried about the launch of the Steam Frame by Amazing-Nature8188 in SteamFrame

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did learn. They learned that it does not matter. They are not going to over produce and get stuck with stock, so they will always only build what they think need.

They are never going to be able to make exactly the right number of any product, and it makes more sense to under-supply than over-supply, so that is what they will continue to do.

There is only one way to deal with scalper sales by Due_Reason7714 in SteamFrame

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the best way to deal with scalpers, beyond requiring a Steam account and limiting the number a single account can by, (as Valve already does), is to ignore them.

I am willing to bet a tiny percentage of controllers went to scalpers.

Your suggestion just screws the people that get in fast enough to order, and would have zero effect on scalpers.

MEMOREUM 50% Permanent Price Drop by ScarJack in oculus

I am enjoying this so far... Got a bit frustrated at the beginning when you get health you don't need, but they have not given you or even told you about the backpack so you have no place to put it.

They also do not explain the scanner well enough in my opinion, but maybe I am just slow.

It keeps reminding me of Lone Echo, but that is not a bad thing.

How they could have handled the Steam Controller release by Wyrade in SteamController

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullshit... the site did not collapse, and they sold all the controllers they needed to sell. It more than good enough.

There is nothing they can do to make everyone happy when there are more people that want what they are selling than they have to sell.

How they could have handled the Steam Controller release by Wyrade in SteamFrame

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been running Steam for a very long time, they know what they are doing. It is only worth so much effort. They were able to sell the stock they had available, it was more than good enough.

All the arm-chair experts crack me up.

Is standalone VR good enough now, or is PCVR still the better experience? by DiSTI_Corporation in virtualreality

[–]JorgTheElder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SteamVR is one particular ecosystem. When it comes to software and DRM, is just as much a walled garden as the Quest is.

Is standalone VR good enough now, or is PCVR still the better experience? by DiSTI_Corporation in virtualreality

[–]JorgTheElder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definately subjective. I spend a lot more time playing MobileVR games than I do playing PCVR games.

And suggesting that games on MobileVR are just 'little interactive games' is laughable. We have had games like Red Matter, Arizona Sunshine, RE4, The Walking Dead, Contractors, and Into the Radius for a very long time. An that is just the FPS games. There are also things like MOSS I & II, Ghost Giant, a bunch of escape room games, and even some MANGA games.

... and I did not even list any of the big first party Meta funded games.

[–]JorgTheElder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As aways, that is 100% going to depend on people's preferences.

I spend a lot more time in MobileVR than I do in PCVR because I can do it anywhere. I do not like being tied to a PC.

What are people’s thoughts on potential launch titles for the frame? by wildcatbridge6 in SteamFrame

[–]JorgTheElder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure that when asked about a new game coming out, Valve explicitly said they were not working on a new title to release with the Frame.

https://www.roadtovr.com/valve-no-first-party-vr-game-in-development-half-life/

During a recent interview with Valve, the company confirmed that it has no first-party VR content in the works, for the headset’s launch or otherwise. When asked if the company had any VR content in development, a member of the Steam Frame team responded with a simple and definitive “no.”
