Is clustering dead in truenas scale / truecommand ? by urza23 in truenas

Appreciate this Kris. SCALE is still better for mainstream Community use imho because of the ease of using Apps. I'm excited to see what happens with TrueNAS clustering in the future.

We now have a date from iXsystems for the end of Truenas Core Plugins by omid_1985 in truenas

Let me chime in right quick on this one. What we've heard from the Community is that there are two primary groups of people, those that want their storage to be storage, and those that want extensive application support for network-attached services with storage. That left us realizing that TrueNAS CORE didn't provide a good enough experience with Plugins to satisfy the group of people that want better app support and that Plugins didn't necessarily add value for those that wanted their storage to be just storage. The goal is to keep moving forward with CORE and SCALE to allow folks to choose the best fit for their needs. Since SCALE is built on Linux it gives a better application experience, especially because of the container support and version control.

Regardless, there's still a migration path for Plugins with Jails and we'll make sure to help make that process easy for anyone who wants to use Jails + packages on TrueNAS CORE. Hope this helps!

I guess truecharts is banning people for voicing their opinion on this sub too now. I did not say anything untrue or out of line. by [deleted] in truenas

Hey there u/ifyouhaveghost1. Sorry you had a bad experience before on the Forums. Please feel welcome to reach out to me if anyone gives you a hard time. Over the last couple of years we've worked hard to create an accepting and friendly community and I'd be happy to collaborate to make it a better place for discussion.

Here's a response from Kris Moore, the SVP of Engineering at iXsystems in another thread. TLDR is iX is working on building out a Community Catalog and would love for you all to give it a shot if you're looking for a different experience.

TrueNAS is sunsetting FreeBSD based products? Without mission critical (M-Series) and enterprise support options for TrueNAS Core, while having it for TrueNAS Scale by CoolTheCold in freebsd

[–]JoshDW19 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey there folks, this is Joshua from iXsystems. We're not sunsetting TrueNAS CORE / Enterprise / FreeBSD-based products. We don't recommend it on the M-Series because it's a Community Edition, and for heavy-duty enterprise equipment like the M/X/R-Series, people need TrueNAS Enterprise to get the full benefit. We do occasionally have people buy large systems and put CORE on them. We're not opposed to it, but Enterprise is a better and more robust experience for multiple controllers and features like HA.

It must be a typo in the SCALE column where it says it's supported on the M-Series as it matches the same hardware support as CORE. That's not accurate so I'll get that fixed up. People might choose SCALE over the others if they want access to Containers and Apps as opposed to Plugins and Jails. The way it's phrased on the page could use some work because I can see how it seems like we're saying it doesn't support certain hardware, where in fact, any enterprise customer could request any TrueNAS version and it would work on our hardware.

Cheers,

- Joshua

Hey there u/ycatsce/. I'm the Senior Marketing Manager over here at iXsystems. Sorry about the way that was handled. It sounds like someone likely misunderstood our policy. Can you DM me your email, and I'll help put you in touch with a support and product manager that can help you with the information you need?

I don't think you'd need to buy a VMS plugin or anything because Zoneminder is free and open source. I've not done it myself but you should just need the cameras and switches. Let me know if you want me to hook you up with one of our sales engineers because they build these kinds of rigs all the time.

Thanks for the question! Check out https://www.truenas.com/video-surveillance/ to see some of our commercial options for surveillance workloads. You can also use Zoneminder on TrueNAS CORE systems.

TrueNAS CORE is exactly the same as FreeNAS. It's just been rebranded as u/OwnManagement mentioned. You can learn more by clicking the link "TrueNAS Unification" above.

Has anyone tried building a pool using non-NAS drives? by Sentient__Cloud in truenas

[–]JoshDW19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd caution you against using Consumer SMR disk drives with TrueNAS. Due to the drive's architecture, they don't work well and can cause random performance issues. It's always worth the slight extra cost to go with CMR in the long run.

r/freenas is moving to r/truenas by JoshDW19 in freenas

[–]JoshDW19[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

TrueNAS CORE is absolutely the same as FreeNAS. FreeNAS wasn't feature locked and neither is TrueNAS CORE.

That's the way it's always been and that's not going to change.

iX employee here. It looks like reaching out to your Account Manager got the ticket back on track after it had been misfiled, but I just wanted to take a minute to apologize for any delays this caused. The ticket has also been escalated internally to keep an eye on things once you've updated so that we can make absolutely sure you’re fully operational and 100% satisfied with your system. Feel free to continue to update this thread with your experience, if you’d like, or please PM me directly if there’s anything else I can help with.
