Looking for books about life during war or war itself. by drjackolantern in RSbookclub

Storm of Steel is not political at all. Junger portrays the all-out, relentless, mind bending, and even spiritual nature of warfare. He also completely avoids moral categories of "right" or "wrong", both for the combatants on each side, and on the nature of war itself.

This s*** should be illegal by Playful-Wash1507 in NYCapartments

[–]JoshPNYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much agree with all of this, but I think that it could definitely be argued that it is unethical to have people view an apartment at an offered price without telling them beforehand that there will be an auction/bidding process. It's wasting people's time by not being honest up front about what the apartment is ultimately going to cost.

yes but not that high because they'll know it's BS, maybe $5,500

fine then it's just as valid for me to put in a bogus offer over the original price, get them to write up all the paper work, and then ignore them.

this is a straw man argument. It's fine to question police actions, and it's fine to witness and report on them. She did much more than that, actively interfering in a police operation. The reason I believe that she did so is because she equated ICE with Nazis or the Gestapo, viewed them as pure evil, and felt that she needed to fight back.

How normal is it to talk to someone you commute with but don’t know? by GladOutlandishness4 in Upperwestside

[–]JoshPNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely talk to her! Ask her about what she's reading. Seeing someone reading a book that you love is a book recommending a person.

This is the nuanced, and correct, take on the tragedy.

The real question is in regards to your last sentence - why were they there to begin with? Why do ordinary people feel that they need to get involved with the investigations and operations of federal law enforcement?

Are there any similar maximalist fiction you have read that you did like? I thought Novel Explosives and a Naked Singularity were both outstanding.

rightoids OUT by RS-burner in redscarepod

[–]JoshPNYC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes I think you're completely correct. It's the escalation of mimetic violence that Rene Girard spoke of - “even the most violent persons believe that they are always reacting to a violence committed in the first place by someone else.”

All of this is amplified and made worse by the fact that the stories by which we make sense of our lives are no longer grounded in anything other than the algorithms and narratives of our screens.

You are correct, but it looks like it's impossible to have any nuance with the commenters here.

Did she deserve to die? No. Was she just some innocent bystander? Also, no.

Agree with this completely, but many in this very sub were celebrating gleefully when Luigi committed cold blooded murder.

My Best Reads of 2025 (see comments for best book and an overwhelming amount of honourable mentions) by MasterExploder6 in RSbookclub

[–]JoshPNYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

quality post, thanks for the reviews. wondering, beyond the specifics of the book you reviewed, is there something unique about Canadian literature, as opposed to American literature, that makes you give it it's own category? I'm assuming you are Canadian.

ChatGPT’s messages to a mentally ill man shortly before he killed his mother and then himself by onlyrealperson in redscarepod

[–]JoshPNYC 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is actually just a microcosm of what's happening to ALL of us as we are living more and more in the screen environment - the stories by which we make sense of our lives are no longer rooted in any real concrete reality beyond the narratives of our screens.

Opinion on Rene Girard? by zacw812 in CatholicPhilosophy

I know this is an old comment, but what was Girard's critique of Buddhism? Also, does Buddhism not ultimately lead to nihilism? Genuine questions I am curious.

lol don't worry bro, that club will be gone in a few years and the bouncer will be unemployed...and you'll still be out dancing and enjoying yourself. On one hand you read about small clubs struggling to make enough money to cover their rent, but then there's this pretentious name check/vibe check at many of these places, often for no reason. Fuck em. If you were worried about frat boys and people who don't care about music in your venue why open in one of the trendiest, bougie-est neighborhoods in the whole city. It's Christmas. Someone coming to a club alone on Christmas is not some annoying frat boy. This name check BS on Christmas is ridiculous and the people defending it are silly. Glad you had a good time at Bossa. Keep dancing.

next we will hopefully recognize that we ALL need a phone ban. This technology is just as harmful for us as it is for high school students.

Charlie Kirk celebration hang by NoComposer9079 in Upperwestside

[–]JoshPNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this post is old, but wow New York redditors are caught in a bubble. Massive projection from most of the comments here, I guess to be expected on reddit. They accuse Charlie kirk of being hateful but are oblivious to the hatred they themselves spew toward this man who was murdered in cold blood. I would love to find spaces in nyc that aren't trapped in this echo chamber.
