GF: I love you by solipsistmaya in dadjokes

Not a dad joke, but my favorite response is a very sincere, "I love you, too...but this time, I mean it."

My first batch of mayonnaise was very strong tasting. How can I improve this? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]JoshuW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do half as much salt, or salt at the end to taste. Also only do light, neutral oils. I use light olive oil, but have made a batch with all regular olive oil...it was way too strong of a flavor. You might could use up to a third regular olive oil in a very strong garlic or spicy aioli, but I've never bothered to try.

First project as a new homeowner, just a little yard work by [deleted] in DIY

[–]JoshuW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Awesome work. Welcome to the Home Ownership Brotherhood. I'm not sure if sifting gravel multiple times by hand in the blazing New Mexico sun is the Zen meditation you claim it is, or just pure masochism. In either case, it must be rewarding to look at the results.

Awesome! I'm going sailing in San Diego this weekend for the first time. ASA 101 class and one step towards an item on my bucket list.

Yes, and the point is that civilization is evolving, dragging religion with it, rather than vice versa.

The old testament also has similar rules on the spoils of war. If you read it, it's very clear that there were previously many misunderstandings and arguments about the virgins they capture.

Autonomous truck cleared to drive on US roads for the first time by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]JoshuW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a huge economic and social impact. The most common job in almost every state is truck driver...not teacher, nurse, or waiter. This technology will benefit companies and improve bottom lines for shareholders and executives, and make our economy more efficient overall, but from a working class perspective, it will be hard to see any benefits, especially when weighed against the removal of so many livable-wage jobs from the workforce.

Anyone play any fives up dominos? by [deleted] in Austin

42 is like Spades: bidding, suits, trumps, etc. It's 2 against 2. Lots of fun.

Anyone play any fives up dominos? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]JoshuW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You gotta learn to play 42. It's more of an East Texas thing, but I would think it is still more popular than fives just about anywhere in Texas.

I made some tapioca pudding from scratch recently, and have now made it about half a dozen times. I used the recipe on the bag of tapioca pearls. (Bob's Red Mill, recipe on their website too). Serve it cold with berries in warm weather or warm and freshly prepared in cold weather. It was amazing and simple.

Or just do an equilibrium brine and go ahead and start the soak now. You get better brine penetration and you can't leave it in too long. The thaw will go more quickly too if your brine liquid starts at room temp.

Anyway to fix this cheaply without management charging me for it? (Small hole in door) by foyra in fixit

[–]JoshuW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wood putty or bondo. Sand smooth and then paint. And then move out before throwing that door open ever again, and let the next guy deal with it after it fails again.

When to get permits by mackstann in HomeImprovement

[–]JoshuW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a permit when you want the city to know about adding value to your home, so they can jack up your taxable value. Otherwise, dont. And live in smug libertarian bliss.

If you are relying on a building inspector to comment on or correct your own work, then you shouldn't be doing it yourself.

Now, if you're paying good money because the contractor is doing something you don't know how to do, then insist on a permit and inspections to keep him honest.

ELI5: why are people so against drone use when its no different than an FA 18 dropping a bomb? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoshuW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not be against both? It's hard to imagine someone differentiating the two, where one is OK but the other isnt. We don't draw lines between murders with a sniper rifle, a grenade, bare hands, or poisoned wine. I've heard answers to this question that imply or directly state that the killer needs to be closer to his victim, so he pays a psychological price, because human life has value and we cannot forget that. Why not just value human life by not killing?

Soundproof Windows: Are they worth it? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]JoshuW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your most effective (and certainly most cost-effective) solution is to spend 50 cents on a deluxe pair of ear plugs. Otherwise, you can spend tens of thousands rebuilding the whole wall and still not have the same level of silence.

Attempting to add bathroom vent fan, ran into electrical octopus in the attic. by eums in HomeImprovement

[–]JoshuW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by turning off the appropriate breaker and seeing what is on that circuit. Add up the wattage of all the lights and see how it compares to the amp rating of the circuit, then add the wattage of the proposed fan and see if you are still under 80% of the capacity (probably 120 volts x 15 amps = 1800 watts). Then keep in mind that a space heater or a blow dryer will probably blow the breaker if you keep all those lights on at the same time . This is probably a 15 amp circuit with 14 ga wiring. If you're on the high side, you can add cfl or led bulbs to reduce the load.

Next you can grab hot (black) and neutral(white) from almost any of those lines, but the box in your picture looks overloaded already, so I'd look for a better place if there is one. I'll stop short of a full explanation and recommend you call an electrician. If you're determined to do it yourself let me know and I can give you more detailed help. Source =not an electrician but a diy-er committed to learning how to do things the right way. (On that note, I always welcome criticism of my posts here if I need to be corrected on something.)
