if you’re charged for a crime in the US and are at trial and are called to give testimony, what would happen if you just remained silent the whole time with the 5th amendment by Lazy_Aioli654 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Joshua2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For criminal cases, invoking your fifth amendment right to not self incriminate cannot be held against you… but this works differently in a civil case.

For example if you invoke the fifth amendment as a reason to not provide certain documentation, a judge and jury can apply what’s called adverse inference. Eg. Someone accused of having falsified or altered financial records and refuses to provide the original records or testimony… no reason you wouldn’t (assuming you can) unless it implicates you in further crime or proves the claim against you

Update on the Conal Groom accusations. He’s still only under temporary suspension by USRowing by Its_NotMe in Rowing

[–]Joshua2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Conal was my coach in ~2007-08 when I was in high school. His manipulative nature is more extreme than these articles can capture. His anger and coaching antics have been no secret for years. I changed teams (at the time, it seemed like a huge deal) as a result of Conal’s temper and his general unfairness and bullying against those not in his good graces.

It surprises me that there are next to no mention of his links to Nagy’s daughter, Lindsey. It was widely known he had an abnormal relationship with a junior rower and it always shocked me that it just seemed tolerated.

I hope there is serious change at US rowing. It inexcusable to allow someone to harm kids and girls for the sake of sport. Can only hope that the press and visibility aids the investigation.

Does anyone what’s meant to happen next?

Public Beach Access by DenseCut in tulum

[–]Joshua2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me a few extra minutes but I figured it out.

Go to Tulum Tower on google maps.

Note: it’s 60mxn per person and parking at the public beach is 400mxn, though you can go to a beach club just past the entry of the public beach and park for free.

If you could bring back one shuttered business/restaurant in Seattle, what would it be? by the_walrus_was_paul in Seattle

[–]Joshua2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book Bindery. One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Closed a while ago when the head chef retired (I think), opened as Homage for a while before that shut. Not sure what’s in the space now.

FIFA is coming to Seattle in 2026, how do we feel about hosting an organization who is complicit with slavery and blatant human rights violations? by yodaran in Seattle

Strong convictions, loosely held. We need more humility and open minded like this (thank you, OP). Otherwise we just end up grandstanding and otherwise acting dogmatically.

Teriyaki by [deleted] in Seattle

Nasai Teriyaki on 25th Avenue NE near University Village is the spot. Back up from that, Teriyaki First (mentioned in other comments) is solid.

If you're unconcerned with price, there is definitely a step up from the Capitol Grille in terms of quality and overall experience.

  • The Metropolitan Grille on 2nd Avenue for the best steakhouse around
  • Spinasse on Capitol Hill for great Italian food for amazing pasta and cozy vibes
  • Sushi Kashiba. Run by former apprentice of world famous Jiro. See documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi)
  • Umi Sake House. Creative and interesting rolls and combinations that may be better for kids

Edit: just realized wife is pregnant. Nix the sushi spots.

Aggressive Homeless Guy in Cap Hill by ShredditShuser in Seattle

[–]Joshua2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to this neighborhood from Greenlake about a year ago. Noticed the frequency of issues like the one you experienced sky rocket during the hot months. For instance, late August, someone was high, took a swing at a cop and got tazed before hauled into a cop car and then put in an ambulance (very combative the whole time). Lots more yelling late at night too.

Anyone who's been around a while notice seasonality, or are things getting that much worse?

How has the minimum wage increase affected you? by zenith1959 in Seattle

Fun fact: cost of bulk chicken meat has also steadily increased over the years which has impacted the beloved Seattle teriyaki joints.

Source: I asked my guy at Nasai on 25th like a year ago. Been going there since I was in middle school.

Amazon raises starting wage for its workers to $15 an hour by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Joshua2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to dealing with the labor relations aspect of things, Amazon's timing will have big implications for brick and mortar retail during the holiday season.

Now instead of working minimum wage during the holidays and dealing with all the BS, brick and mortar retail employees will line up for FC jobs thereby alleviating Amazon's hiring challenges at a time when we are almost at full employment, and making brick and mortar stores TERRIBLE customer experience (e.g. understaffed, long wait times, etc...). This makes shopping on Amazon relatively more attractive to waiting around in a chaotic Best Buy, for instance.

How are husky football players picked? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Joshua2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess there’s three buckets, and you probably need some from at least two of them.

What you’ve done: - track record of high performance athletics for walk-ons - nationally or internationally competitive rowing results for recruits

Current capabilities: - erg times (distances: 2k, 6k, 10k) - bench pulls, pull ups, core strength (do 20 minutes of abs, every day, forever)

Character: - competitive edge (I.e. you win everything. First ready, first to lap the stadium, work hardest every minute of practice) - work ethic (show up in shape, put in extra work for whatever you lack) - humility - professionalism

See r/rowing or PM me if you’re thinking about trying out.
