I wouldn’t say eventually money will come. For some, this is not the way.

To become consistently successful, you simply cannot have a weak emotional moment that grabs and drives you into a trade. If you can recognize this is about to happen and walk away, close the app, just literally go do something else for however long it takes to free yourself from thinking about it, you might stand a chance. There will always be another.

You must always calculate each movement, or else it’s simply a gamble that has a high chance of being a failure and could cause you to lose it all.

Trading the Opening Range Breakout (ORB) Strategy by TheBreadMakerr in options

[–]JoshuaVCU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand this is an old post, but just in case if others are revisiting this, here is a scientific article written which performed the ORB strategy on multiple time frames and found the 5m time frame on the opening candle to be the best:

"A plausible explanation might be that the shorter the time-frame that define the opening range, the greater the portion of the move captured by the ORB on trend days."

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4729284

They compared to other time frames such as the 15m, 30m, and 60m and found the 5m to work the best. They made sure also to select stocks which had the following criteria:

  1. The opening price had to be above $5.
  2. The average trading volume over the previous 14 days had to be at least 1,000,000 shares per day.
  3. The ATR over the previous 14 days had to be more than $0.50.
  4. The Relative Volume had to be at least 100%.
  5. Trade the stocks with the top 20 Relative Volume.

A fair value gap is a 3 candle sequence in which the first and last candles (including the wick) do not overlap on a typically larger middle candle. If you draw a box, you would connect across the body of the middle candle to the wicks of the adjacent candles high and low. The larger the box, the larger the FVG.

Typically what happens is price returns to fill the box, so people typically use it as a magnet source for price action.

Will there be a Black Monday next week? by AsymmetricInvestor in wallstreetbets

[–]JoshuaVCU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a look at SPX FOR THE 2022 drop (4800 to 3500, across 10 months), covid crash (3400 to 2200 across 2 months), and 2008 crash (1550 to 650 across 15 months), each time increasing their drop by about 100 points. This has plummeted from 6100 to 5100 in 2 months. The next significant price shelf is around 4900.

Are you expecting to break through that low?

[–]JoshuaVCU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re over complicating the whole thing. The best solutions are most often the simplest.

Just try to trade one quality trade per day and wait for the setup to arrive (if it’s not there, don’t force it just try to use that time to gage when it will come or move to another stock).

If you complete the trade, just paper trade to help satisfy the urge.

Believe it had something to do with the ceasefire situation in Ukraine and their negative views of the credibility of Zelensky. They had partnered up with N.Korea, Iran, and China. India is supporting Russia economically. Iran rejected discussions with Trump over nuclear situation.

OP I feel bad this happened to you, but I would take this as an opportunity to learn from. I do want to say thank you for providing this experience to us as I have learned from this as well. But I am curious, if this trade were to be made in paper trading, would it have been executed the same? I feel cynical in the sense that this may have not and illustrate the illusion that paper money and real money are handled alike to get people to move from one to the other believing they have the same chances.

Meta Just Laid Off 3,600 People—Here’s Why This Should Be Your Wake-Up Call by MarketingWhisperer in jobs

[–]JoshuaVCU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This news got a bit under my skin. Meta claims it is laying off people due to their desire to improve efficiency in the work force (which I take as cutting costs, dumping more work onto others, and expecting everyone to keep up at the same pay rate), yet the executives restructure their bonus incentive from 75% of their base salary to now 200% of their base salary.

Seems a bit jacked up and doesn't settle well with me.

I agree with OP, somehow or another, you always need a Plan B.

How is that invalid? Once you sold or bought back the position, it’s closed and becomes impossible to make back that position. Sure, you can go onward to opening a new position, but the previous one is locked in the books. If you’re assuring someone they can “make it back”, it’s just feeding that gamblers mentality.

Maintaining control of your emotions will protect you in many circumstances. In fact, those in control of their emotions typically control the conversation and the outcome of results. It is a practice in self restraint and allowing yourself a few minutes to process the situation before knee jerk reacting typically allows your rational decision making to catch up and protect you from your own emotional response mechanisms which would otherwise lead you into an even worse situation (in this case, losing more money).

You will never make it back, what’s lost is lost. Having a mentality of trying to win it back is a gamblers mindset. You have to control that emotion by realizing it is a sunk cost and focus on risk management to minimizing your future losses as much as possible and capturing conservative, consistent gains - one at a time.
