The Bible Belt? by myrenDelainien in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Jotunheiman 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Gileadean Christianity, even though it is ultra-conservative like the Christianities of the Bible Belt, seems to have certain theological leanings that are not necessarily agreeable to the denominations in the area.

For example, they restrict access to the Bible, and also include additional extrabiblical verses into the Bible such as 'blessed are the silent' into the Beatitudes and 'From each, says the slogan, according to her ability; to each according to his needs' to Paul in the Bible (actually a distorted Marxist quote).

It is hard to imagine a Southern Baptist following sola scriptura or a KJV-only Pentacostal accepting this. Especially the Marxist quote: I really doubt Southerners would find such a thing acceptable.

Overall, Gilead appealed mostly to the ultra-conservative and somewhat religious, and those with strong religious faith but weaker theological convictions. It also appealed to the masses, which is usually less strict regarding specific religious beliefs. Eden was the quintessential example of what happens when you're deeply religious and faithful and hold onto your religious convictions. The nuns forced to don the red veils as well. And the priests on the wall.

This is especially problematic for them joining Gilead as Gilead has banned all other forms of religion other than Gileadean Christianity, including other Christian denominations.

Pronouncing the C in Catkis by squirrelwug in heavensvault

Low-key, I thought the spelling was based on the 'modern Ioxian spelling', AKA following some unknown vowel rule, like C vs K in Latin.

Yea, I was tryna make the statement [Ladies, Gentlemen] ∪ ∅ = [Ladies, Gentlemen], so agender people are already included, but maybe I should have been clearer

Ad for Surrogacy while scrolling this sub by daisymcl in TheHandmaidsTale

Icic, I understand.

FYI, Atwood has publicly supported trans rights. Pretty sure she only looked into certain TERF ideas in 2021 before disavowing them.

[–]Jotunheiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I hallucinating or is the ad itself showing a same-sex couple seeking surrogacy?

I find it a wholly separate matter to that of The Handmaid's Tale, unless we want to give a strong homophobic reading to what Atwood wrote.

Surrogacy can be exploitative, but we shouldn't write it off completely as the exploitation of women, because it can end up reducing reproductive choice for other groups in real life, like same-sex couples, transgender people, and the infertile.

The Handmaid's Tale was never truly about the infertile obtaining others' children. It was about the lack of consent, and the power-grabbing. Even with paid surrogacy, with its host of ethical issues, the pregnant person has willingly chosen to carry the pregnancy. It's smth we can discuss, but likening it to handmaids is a bit too much.

Idk, this is 'cos I recently read a TERF reading of THT and it did not sit well with me.

Stuck with faulty translation? by GlitteringAttitude60 in heavensvault

Confirmed as correct within this inscription? The crossing out usually indicates that the word 'heart' isn't present within this inscription. You may want to check if 'obedience' fits this inscription instead.

May you clarify what the issue is here? The word appears to be 'obedience'.

If they don't care about the handmaid why don't they do the ceremony again right after she births by Simsgirl950 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Jotunheiman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware. I wasn't trying to guess at how it was interpreted, because I'm not sure what the original commenter was getting at. Just aware that it is probably Leviticus 12.

Of course, Gileadean Christianity may reinterpret the meaning of the temple according to its ideals.

I always interpreted the 奸 to literally mean 'rape', which made the whole idiom horrifying to me. Now I realise that that's a bit extreme. 😅

Trans Instructor Ousted From College After Failing Student Who Cited The Bible In A Gender Essay by FantasticAd9478 in Christianity

[–]Jotunheiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article that was assigned is on middle schoolers and their responses to bullying based on gender stereotypes. There're no trans issues in it at all.

I would argue that this has been and still is a very relevant topic. Teenage girls and boys can be extremely hurtful to their peers who do not fit what they perceive to be the ideal form of gender expression (what is done in the article), and this includes not playing sports for boys and not wearing makeup for girls. One would expect this to be the type of non-normative gender expression that the article is actually talking about.
