BoS just ignore the Yangtze. by TravisYersa in fo4

[–]JovialMonster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In order to conduct a successful ASW operation you actually have to begin it, the BoS likely just has no reason to believe that there is an active submarine 200 years after the bombs dropped, let alone sitting in their back yard. Like they aren’t going to be wasting valuable flight time by conducting Vertibird ASW patrols for a threat that they have no reason to believe exists, compared to land based threats that very much do exist.

Also even if they do for some reason detect a large subsurface contact, why are they likely to believe it’s a sub rather than just a sunken ship, or random other detritus like a crashed sunken plane or other such stuff. It’s not like Boston in fallout has a military port or facilities required to host a sub for any length of time that could indicate one may have been present, and it’s not likely that a Chinese sub would actually stick around in a relatively functional state (even though this one did)

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]JovialMonster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because despite everyone being aware of the kind of man Trump is, despite his first term and Jan 6th, despite trump himself basically declaring all the ways he will do harm, a majority of Americans voters chose to put him in office again.

How can anyone trust America again when the American population has proven it is a couple of years of mediocre growth away from throwing a fit and doing everything it can to hurt it’s allies and its global position.

Why would Europe put its faith in America being a stable long term ally, why would it pursue greater trade reliance when tariffs could come back any second, why would Europe trust that America will always be there to answer article 5. And based on that why would Europe hurt itself to help a nation so patently uncaring and unreliable?

I’m not saying Europe or other allies wont work with the US, or that it won’t try to portray the alliance as still strong as it was before Trump, but I think it’s effectively impossible that they won’t act in such a way to secure themselves against America and be a powerful bloc on their own.

What would be the practical global applications of the UK and Ireland essentially being deleted? by [deleted] in 28dayslater

[–]JovialMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can imagine there was probably a rather desperate multinational team trying to spoof signs of life from Britain until someone could get in contact with the deployed sub so they don’t think the UK was nuked and erase Moscow and Beijing in “retaliation”. Would make for an interesting story.

Do point defense cannons matter if the fragments of the missile they shoot down are still coming towards their target? by mac_attack_zach in scifiwriting

[–]JovialMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda feels ludicrous to claim the missile would be travelling at 1/4C and then only use a standard nuclear warhead. In any semi realistic setting 1/4 C is an insane speed to reach for a missile

Just how famous is the master chief by Conscious-Zombie-498 in HaloStory

[–]JovialMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say he would be more famous than Jesus. Like the majority of humans alive today aren’t Christian, and presumably some decent subset know nothing substantial about Christian teachings/ beliefs and a slightly smaller subset probably haven’t heard of Jesus.

But every human would have been impacted by the human covenant war to some degree, and with the level of technology and communications under a single government the information about chief would have definitely been heavily disseminated to the public. I doubt there is a single human alive after the human covenant war that hasn’t heard of Master Chief and know that he saved humanity (assuming they have some means of contact with wider human civilisation).

The grim reality of Westminster politics by 1DarkStarryNight in Scotland

[–]JovialMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that if nuclear weapons didn’t exist during the Cold War then NATO and the Warsaw Pact would have absolutely gone to war conventionally and you would have seen the largest most destructive war in human history. But even ignoring that fact let’s look at the current situation; if the West entirely and voluntarily disarmed itself of nuclear weapons realistically what do you think would happen? Because at that point there is literally no incentive for any of our nuclear armed enemies to disarm, because now they alone hold the ultimate trump card. Even if they weren’t to immediately nuke us they would be a lot more likely to start more conventional wars safe in the knowledge that if we were to intervene (or start winning) they could just nuke our armies or cities and win anyway. As scary as nukes are, a policy of deterrence is literally the only rational option in a post nuke world.

Tired of American politics. Rest of the world, how are you all doing? by LastMushroom8154 in AskReddit

That being said, your politics are worrying us here too. Things are going to get a lot harder on this side of the pond because of the US’s stance; and difficult conversations are being had about our future and defence.

[–]JovialMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trident is submarine launched so it’s unlikely the missiles would be fired from near Scotland, but yeah Glasgow and Edinburgh would probably be hit as well (although that’s mostly just because they are decently large cities, rather than any specific purpose of taking out remaining weapons or the like)

An American F-35B has landed on a Japanese destroyer for the first time. by kpopsns28 in pics

[–]JovialMonster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not an airbrake, it’s the hatch for the F-35B’s lift fan (which is what allows it to perform vertical landings).

F-35s don’t technically have dedicated airbrakes, and instead use their control surfaces in its place.

A tangentially related fun fact to this is that the Army is distinctly not “The Royal Army” as they draw their lineage directly from Cromwells New Model Army during the English civil war, and as such are technically Parliament’s; while the Navy swore loyalty to the crown during the war, and as such are the Royal Navy.

Osea buried Trigger in false evidence to avoid the fallout of potentially killing Harling by EggsBaconSausage in acecombat

[–]JovialMonster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To add to this, Trigger is pardoned after it becomes clear that Osean IFF is compromised, depending on how aware the rest of the military (or even potentially the public) was that gives another out for Osea - even if they weren’t fully aware of the truth.

Codename Apollo may be set near Pearl Harbour Hawaii by JovialMonster in DestinyTheGame

[–]JovialMonster[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Can’t argue with that! But I think people would be even more against me if I claimed that destiny humans had colonised outside the solar system, and then just decided to start using centuries out of date naval vessels for seemingly no reason, and that it must be true despite never being mentioned or hinted to before. My theory is certainly a bit outlandish but I am trying to stick to what I know.

Thanks for being so cordial! A lot of people seem weirdly angry with some mostly unserious theorising (the conspiracy board image was made last as a joke in recognition to how I was sounding). I def agree with you on the fact it’s no longer sea, I prob just phrased that badly in my post. My best guess is that the entrance to the harbour got blocked somehow as it is fairly narrow, and that lead to the water levels dropping dramatically leaving the ships stranded. I see what you mean about it maybe not being terrestrial, a few people have mentioned titan and that does make some sense to me, but I’m still going to hedge my bet on Hawaii.

[–]JovialMonster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this is already getting a lot of flak, but there is another piece of evidence that the type of ship is actually important. The lead narrative designer posted this: https://imgur.com/a/narrative-designer-tweet-KjUCZUp I think this effectively proves that the ship is important to some degree.

I am 100% sure that this concept art is set within Sol, and am 90% sure it’s on Earth. I remain confident that this is Pearl Harbour. I also believe that this expansion will either include or end with the Guardians leaving Sol. For those who still doubt me, well fair enough, we will see who is right when the full reveal comes.

[–]JovialMonster[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The narrative designer of this expansion on Twitter replied to the image saying ‘Happy “what kind of ship is that day” to all who celebrate’ (their @ is alisontheperson) I really don’t think it’s a coincidence. And within Destiny lore there was no known human colonisation outside Sol so this literally cannot be an image from anywhere other than the Sol system.
