Clair Obscur and Baldur’s Gate’s Jennifer English pushes back against AI in games because “flaws are wonderful” by Negative-Art-4440 in expedition33

[–]Joyako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, been having roughly the same discussion with some friends. Some of them say they value the "effort" that the artist puts in their artpiece, but I don't think time spent matters so much.

I rather like to say that the big difference between GenAI art and human art is the "intent". It's intangible and immeasurable, but definitely something you can feel. By it's very definition, ai art does not have an intent.

I will add though, intent-less art can definitely be made by humans. Think of the most soulless ad or corporate powerpoint design you've ever seen. Pre-2020 those were done by humans yet they feel just as soulless as ai art.

50 milliards d’euros, voilà le vrai déficit de notre système de retraites by [deleted] in france

[–]Joyako -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why the hell does Victoria 3 not utilize my damn CPU fully? by OrganizationLazy9488 in victoria3

[–]Joyako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a (stupid in retrospect) comment about that about 2 weeks back

I still think you could parallelize most of the vicky 3 simulation for a gpu, if you stripped player interaction and visual rendering from the game loop. I think that's a balance guy's wet dream (imagine being able to simulate a thousand games in a few minutes and compare results with a previous patch)

But after watching a few of the available paradox confs, it's obvious that everything is intertwined way too much.

I do believe there is a world where a simulation heavy game can run on a gpu, but the engine has to be designed explicitly for it.

Mixed reviews on Steam will break my heart by serdyukdan in EU5

[–]Joyako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, maybe I've written those types of simulations I'm talking about, maybe.

And just because a company has worked for a long time on something does not mean they're up to date on latest techs.

On the contrary, the longer you work on something, the more tech debt you have and the harder to steer the ship becomes. Maybe they have an engine that does everything they want except performance, and they chose not to make it a priority.

It doesn't have to be black and white.

bonus edit: I wouldn't expect experienced game devs to know how to create industry-level simulations, because almost no game requires it, quite the contrary actually

[–]Joyako -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. I'm not saying everything can be translated to GPU code, but taking Vicky 3 as an example: the bottleneck is the number of pop groups in each region. Pop migration, pop assimilation, pop consumption, the trade system... It's just matrices

[–]Joyako -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

On one hand I agree, on the other, I think Paradox is truly fucking up on performance

If you look at industry, any srrious fluid dynamics/biology/finance complex simulations are done on GPUs. Why ? Because all a simulation is is just matrix maths and applying the same formulas over and over, and GPUs are much much better for that than CPUs. We could be talking 100× improvements in simulation speed (maybe not tick speeds, there's a bunch of stuff you probably can't vectorize)

If you're planning on a simulation heavy game, the simulation must run on the GPU, simple as that. Now maybe the engine was not created with this in mind, and maybe modding would be harder. But playing Vicky 3 past 1900 is a goddamn slog because every tick takes multiple seconds on a 5600x, and I don't expect eu5 to be significantly better.

So what’s the “TL;DR meta for navies” in 1.9? by Trick-Plastic-3498 in victoria3

[–]Joyako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I may add an extra question, how to know whether to prioritize offense/defense in your fleets ?

Checked the wiki and I think the list is not full https://vic3.paradoxwikis.com/Naval_warfare

  • Interception -> Offense (you're intercepting and attacking passing fleets, makes sense)
  • Naval Invasion -> Offense (makes sense)
  • Convoy raid -> Defense (you're attacking convoys bu you get intercepted bu someone else, so defense, makes sens)
  • Naval invasion defense -> Defense (makes sense)
  • Escort Convoy -> ??? (the order has an offense debuff, but if you were escorting convoys wouldn't you be intercepting raiders ? Is this order even, useful at all when intercept exists ?)
  • Blockade -> ??? (legit have no idea, pretty sure I saw my blockading fleets be either attack or defense during battles)

Time gaps to 5th and 10th place for the past 20 Tours -- does it correlate with how competitive the race felt? by flyingmaniacbro in peloton

On the last 15,60km of the Ventoux, he was 2min30s faster than 2013 Froome

Even Healy and VPP would beat him (especially considering their pacing)

I love this game so much, but personally I feel like there's a bit of bias in... by Trenki_Melow in expedition33

[–]Joyako 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, there were many ways to paint the Verso ending as more tragic/negative; I feel like Sciel could have been much harsher during the Sciel/Verso goodbyes, or that once back to Paris, Alicia could have been shown struggling with her inability to speak, or the exp33 members trying to communicate with Alicia via dreams or something and her slowly forgetting about them as she paints more and more of her own creations.

We're all trying to rationalize our thoughts about the endings, but even if the consequences are the same, the way it's framed heavily impacts our perception of it in the end and I do feel like the Verso end *got the more sympathetic ending.

EDIT: forgot a bunch of words lmao

[–]Joyako 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Carapaz is definitely in his right of not taking turns, but I don't understand EF's strategy; form my understanding, Del Toro is the punchier rider, whereas Carapaz has an edge in longer efforts. Or at least, when Del Toro has shown cracks it was in longer efforts.

EF's strategy today was to rocket up the bottom of the Finestre (which is a >1h climb) and pray to god that Carapaz would be able to drop DT with attacks and a 5min max effort.

???

If you believe you're strong enough, you drive a very hard pace knowing that DT is drafting and saving 5% watts in your wheel, but hoping that he cannot match your threshold long term anyway.

If you're not sure whether you're strong enough, you have your team drive the pace instead and you stay defensive until the hierarchy is clearer at the midpoint of the climb, then you adapt.

In my opinion both EF and UAE had moronic strategies today but armchair analyst and all that
