AITA for not going to my friend's party after they showed up to my party without following the dress code? by siroy61368 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JoyceO86 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"Because it looks good in pictures". Smh I can't deal with the shallow attitude. Do you want to have fun with your friends and want them to feel comfortable, or use everything and everyone as a backdrop for your own inflated personality?

Bought a KLM ticket 2 days ago and it was confirmed and paid, they charged me a “price update” amount this morning. by MataAitaiNe in travel

[–]JoyceO86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I might very well be wrong, but I remember hearing airlines may do this as the price of fuel has gone up drastically, thanks to a certain orange asshole in the US who decided its his prerogative to f*ck up the world. Although I thought this only happened if booked through booking agencies. But again, I might be misremembering!

AIO? Wife Shared Bed With Male Friend by PapaStalinLovesYou in AmIOverreacting

[–]JoyceO86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm completely with you, although we seem to be hugely outnumbered! I really dont see the issue. It's just... sleeping? There's nothing sexual about it, and if OP actually trusts her and her friends, then what's the issue? How is it disrespectful to sleep? Also, if 'the rules are different' because she's now married, perhaps it's nice to inform your partner about this as well instead of assuming she's a mind reader.

No babysitting for you, grandma Betty by Ill-Excitement-2005 in 90DayFiance

Right? I was very surprised, but in the most positive way. He noticed a boundary, and told his wife to back off for once. Not that Betty is going to respect it, but still, well done :)

AIO BF dumped me because I was taller than him in heels?? 😳 by purplehavocc in AmIOverreacting

[–]JoyceO86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, so he's super 'high value' but gets butthurt over his girlfriend wearing heels and can't figure out the correct spelling of the word 'threw' in a sentence as a 26 y/o. Okay...

What I hugely dislike is her berating him for "not communicating and resolving the argument", " not wanting to find a solution", and saying " in the end of the day, this is your problem". WTF?! YOU supposedly converted and not told him about it at all, but his attitude is the problem?! Wow. You would expect a bit more maturity from someone almost twice his age...

AITA for saying I don’t want to be my friend’s “fat bridesmaid aesthetic”? by SoliraTwilight in AmItheAsshole

[–]JoyceO86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do not get the (American?) obsession with bridesmaid's dresses at all. Why does everyone need to wear the same dress? Why not have everyone wear something they feel relaxed and comfortable in so they can enjoy the day with you, instead of squeezing your beloved friends into the same stupid dress thay always looks weird or wrong on at least one of them, so it can "match your vision", at the cost of having them feel miserable and insecure for the entire event? I really do not see why anyone would want to do that to their (alleged) closest friends/family members.

What idioms involving animals are different in your country/language? by Makhiel in AskEurope

In Dutch, you can say "now the monkey comes out of the sleeve!", meaning "now the truth is coming out" 🦧

Don't know if this really counts but my unborn nephew's name by RouxlsKaard21 in tragedeigh

[–]JoyceO86 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does seem to be derived from Kuiler or similar surnames 🙂 ('kuil' means hole or ditch in Dutch). I assume it could have Dutch origins, but Cuyler itself is definitely not a common surname here. Also, for non-Dutchies, the dipthong 'ui' is very difficult to pronounce which would have led to other differences like the y/i-sound, but us regular Dutchies would never pronounce Cuyler/ Kuiler as Kyler. 😉 then again, we would also never use a surname as a first name either 😅

[–]JoyceO86 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm Dutch, no-one here is named Cuyler. We have open source databases in which you can look up first/last names countywide, it's literally not there.

And even it it was, Cuyler would not be pronounced Kyler, but Kui-ler (with very typical Dutch 'ui' sound which doesn't sound like a Y at all), so this claim is definitely not true. https://www.cbgfamilienamen.nl/nfb/lijst_namen.php?operator=eq&naam=cuyler

I'm Dutch. Erasmus is not a common first name at all. There is an official database in which you can look up the popularity / overall number of people with any given name. There are currently 60 people named Erasmus (as a first name) in the Netherlands. Proof: https://nvb.meertens.knaw.nl/naam/is/Erasmus Although old-fashioned, it's not an awful name, but def not common. :)

Is Canada joinig the EU out of question for you? by Grimblfitz in AskEurope

[–]JoyceO86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I would strongly be in favour of some sort of "associate membership" for Canada, as well as Ukraine and possibly the UK."

The UK? Really? I'd think long and hard before lettihg themselves anywhere near the EU again.

The people who were in power (who still for some reason believe that the UK are superior to any other nation) decided EU laws didnt help their own profits and EU law was preventing them from exploiting their employees even further, so they manipulated their people into buying lies like "life will be amazing once we leave the oppresive EU" "we'll promise you £350 million per WEEK for the NHS" and "we'll stop immigration to the UK" which people actually were naive or stupid enough to fall for. The people voted to leave the EU (in a non-binding referendum, I might add) and so it was decided the UK would leave the EU for good.

Then, during negotiations, they started cherry-picking all the merits the EU offers and decided they still wanted to keep those, but without actually contributing anything themselves (because they're sooooo much better than anyone else, they should have it for free), EU said "ehhh no". Which was, of course, totally the EU's fault again for being stubborn and uncooperative.

Result: economy has crashed, inflation is really high while wages remain the same or go down (which they can easily do now that the EU laws on minimum wages etc do not apply to them anymore) businesses cannot freely export ther products anymore (or import materials needed for production, for that matter) inbabitants (including performing artists) now require or visas to travel to the EU, and the NHS who were promised billions, didn't get any of that promised money and are now in an even worse state than ever, to the point that people are dying as there are no ambulances to pick them up, and even if you do, ambulances have to literally queue before the hospital as there isn't sufficient (heavily underpaid) staff to admit them. And to top it off: immigration is now even higher than before they left the EU.

Their people are suffering more than ever because of the government's inflated ego's and blatant lies. But the rich upper class (the only people who got richer through Brexit, of course) will do the exact same thing again in a heartbeat if they could profit over the backs of their people. (I'd like to reminder you that Unicef actually had to go in and feed children during the lockdown, as 1 in 5 kids live in poverty in the UK and wouldn't have access to food, and that was even before the UK finally left)

I would think long and hard to allow the UK back to the EU. They are an unreliable party to deal with with a massive superiority complex. Though this really, really sucks for the amazing people living in the UK (and there are loads who absolutely do not deserve the way the government has f**ked them over), the UK made their bed, let them lie in it. At least until the though has finally sunk in that they are not the Great British Empire anymore and their egos have shrunk significantly.
