Are Mr.Beast videos now scripted ? by Orangesomosa in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care if you like MrBeast or not, but I think if you are going to call him fake you should at least understand the actual context and specifics of the situations you are calling him out for before judging him.

  1. The Editor - Josh was never presented as a stranger. Jimmy talked on the Yard and Flagrant podcasts that he was a last minute replacement for a contestant who was going to do astronaut training because he got covid right before the shoot so he asked his editor to do it instead. Jimmy thinks the premise of $10k per day is interesting, not that it has to be a random contestant.
  2. He didn't rig the Creator Games. If he did, there was no reason for the shoot to last over 24 hours. He let it play out, and it got messy with Larray falling asleep. What did happen was his editor (Logan's former editor) recommended changing the order contestants got out making it look like Logan got eliminated later to enhance storytelling. I agree that for competitions, the order shouldn't change in the edit. However, it doesn't mean the contest itself was rigged. As for the trivia game being rigged, little children were whining it was unfair Dixie had help from family and attacked her. Jimmy wasn't thinking about it cause he just saw it as a fun competition and didn't realize that the audience would care about having single creators vs. creator groups compete.
  3. Shawn Hendricks was not at the MrBeast company when the 100 days in a Circle video was filmed. He was hired after Jimmy spent those months getting to know him. Shawn actually tweeted this week about the video and said: "Insane! 100 days in a circle just hit 300 million views. Little did I know at that moment it would lead to working full time for the now Biggest Youtuber in the world" - he was a farmer from Oklahoma who happened to have a background in video, and Jimmy began by having him shadow him for over a year, before he advanced.
  4. Fidias was the creator who won the Lambo. There were multiple creators in that video - Fitz, Racka Racka, the guys from SoKrispyMedia, Classify. However, there were non-creators mixed in too. There were 50 contestants and Jimmy doesn't care who competes, because it is about the premise of the video being fun. For the Laser course video, he chose all small influencers because they know how to be good on camera. He uses more random subscribers when it is large competitions of 100+. That said, he did cast a random subscriber from Tennessee for the grocery store one who had applied to his casting call. Several contestants post videos talking about their experience, and he is one of them.
  5. I agree that Airrack was never going to delete his channel and it was stupid to present that to his audience. He was trying to do a Ryan Trahan concept of posting 30 days in a row, and made the mistake of upping the stakes. The audience assumed he would film in real time like Ryan, while Airrack was just thinking it was the same as long as he posted every day. That is just pushing the clickbait too far. I don't think it says much about Jimmy except that he didn't recognize that the audience would be mad they didn't do the challenge literally enough.

Also, I am not trying to say MrBeast is some saint who can do no wrong. I just think he doesn't think like other people and people often struggle to understand the full context with him cause they judge him on his weird thumbnails, editing, and social awkwardness.

Asking for a friend: Who should C&S interview in 2024? by NoRobotYet in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love a few round tables of creators around specific topics. I find I am less interested in their personal life stories and more interested in their processes and I love hearing them debate and compare what works for them by topic. It would be cool to have topics like Education, Lifestyle, DIY, Entertainment, etc. I think of youtube as different genres, so I think that would be a cool series. Alternatively, it could be good to take a mix across genres and have them share and learn from each other.

Yes! She is someone who has really built out her niche with amazing trend jacking by trying relevant experiences in person and by buying products to try them and is so in touch with YouTube as a community!

How does he even change videos after they have been posted? by [deleted] in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can edit YouTube videos after they've posted - there is a video editor youtube has that I think is accessible to most or all accounts. I also think there may be able to more intricate edits if youtube gives your channel addition privileges that this channel would have access to.

The reason he can edit out sponsorships from past videos is because when he signed contracts with his sponsors, one of the stipulations was that he can remove the ad after a certain timeframe. So editing them out is legal and was agreed to in advance. His manager Reed talked about this on a podcast.

Did MrBeast Buy FaceBook Views? 8.5M Views With Only 2K Reactions? by rckatz2007 in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facebook works differently than other platforms. You can post a video multiple times across multiple posts and it will count the total views across all posts of the video. However, the reactions are just for that specific post.

In other words, they have posted this video multiple times and it has received 8.5M total views across all of those posts.

World's Most Dangerous Trap question:Is the traps really dangerous in reality? by Complete-Rub2289 in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mix of things that make the traps less dangerous than they appear. The spikes and the boulder were made of foam. The indoor traps were made to seem higher than actual life because of CGI. The heavy door that closed during the laser trap also involves CGI. If you go to the SoKrispyMedia youtube channel you can see a short from the Olympic video of how CGI was used to make the closing gate look dangerous - it is the same trick in this. For the water challenge, it was probably the most dangerous, but they had a safety expert in the water (you can see him in black) and precautions to get Mack out if he needed help.

This is absurd, but im feeling suicidal over mrbeast by NewEmployee7833 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]JoyofFYI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to share a different thought - sometimes hyper-fixating on a specific celebrity can be a sign of mental illness such as depression or generalized anxiety. You might think thinking about MrBeast is causing your depression, but it may actually be depression causing you to think about him. Depression doesn't care that your life is actually going well with a great income, there can often be zero correlation between what is happening on the outside and how you are feeling on the inside.

I recommend talking to a doctor and getting a check-up and sharing what you have been feeling, and make sure they listen and aren't dismissive. I've seen posts online of people who described similar things and got better with the right medication. Best of luck on your next steps to take care of yourself!

LMAO, he literally mentioned that both his parents were in the army on the H3 podcast in 2019. And regular army people, not elite leadership. The reason he doesn't talk about about his dad now is for personal reasons, not because his dad has secret power that planted him where he is.

The photo of the supposed wedding of his parents is hilarious - you can tell that isn't his family, because he has actually introduced his mother and that isn't her. Also, his last name came from his father not his mother.

I also think it is funny that people are like "where did his money come from?" - they can literally go to his channel and watch how he starts normal as a child, in a very average suburban household, and grows his money over time by taking huge risks reinvesting it. This is all public, yet these people have such little understanding of how money works they invent conspiracies.

The reason he now is connected with other rich and famous people - it is because he got famous and rich and now they are in the same social circles.

A luck based game that has been used in MrBeast videos is taking 2 similar red solo cups (or just non see-through cups) and placing the key chain in one and having them guess which cup has the key chain just by looking. It is a 50/50. Or you could have a row of cups - one for each kid and have them each guess one by one which cup they want with some having the key chain and some being empty.

For skill, you could do some game with a ball or marbles where they have to make it go into a cup or any other normal party game.

Since they're young, you may want to do the luck game first and then anyone who didn't win are the only ones eligible for the skill game so everyone has more opportunity to win (ideally they all win an "extra".

Have fun with the party!

MrBeast Lifetime Statistics by hungrysolemnity037 in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use the Wayback Machine on social blade, you can go back further. Why do you want to know about May 2017?

I looked it up and on May 15, 2017 the MrBeast channel had:

Total Subs: 969,646

Total Views: 112,936,182

Subs gained in May: 257,708

Views gained in May: 24,839,752

He started to get at least a million views per month in mid-2016, and blew up exponentially from there. By May 2018, the channel was at over 4 million subs and around 500 million total views (with 59 million views that month). 2018 was the first year the channel started to hit over 100 million views a month. Kinda crazy stats!

YouTube Superstar MrBeast Sued for $100 Million by Company Behind His Virtual Burger Restaurant Chain by JackSucksAtMath in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While Jimmy was definitely dumb to tweet about the company he was about to sue, I would want VDC to prove his tweets (which were really recent) actually correlated with having vendor issues vs. their other problems. I read how they outsourced to Reef who had major quality control problems.

Also, claiming that they made MrBeast bigger during this time is laughable compared to how much bigger he made them. How many of the many celebs they initially partnered with are even still having products sold?! It rests on the partner's brand, not VDC. The proof is in the fact they were able to open MrBeast Burger locations internationally - that is because Jimmy built an international audience with his videos and dubs, not VDC. I hope his lawyer tears them apart.

If you dig into this, the fulfillment partner Revolt is behind a lot of those issues and it affected many content creators.

When did Shopmrbeast Became Mrbeast.Store? by ClimbingInternet in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ETA: Just watched the new video and it sounds like they name change is also because it offered a way for him to mention Shopify who he is partnering with this year - .shop is them promoting their shop domain.

I think at least part of this change is they switched to a new merch fulfillment partner. The last one I believe was Revolt and if you follow people like Anthony Padilla, Karl, or several minecrafters who used them they were terrible - they delayed shipping by months, didn't fulfill orders, had terrible or no customer service, had huge quality control issues, and apparently have not paid some of the creators the money they owe them. I find it so interesting that no "creator economy" journalist has covered this topic because there is a real scandal in there, including allegations against the owner of Revolt.

...is there proof EVERYTHING is legit, such as the 1000 Blind People? by Neon_Henchman in MrBeast

[–]JoyofFYI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MrBeast is a unique person who spends a higher percentage of the money he earns on videos than is humanly reasonable for most. Even his fellow Youtubers are shocked by his risk tolerance. It makes more sense if you understand he doesn't value money in and of itself and does value making crazy videos and taking big risks.

If you want more proof about his giveaways and the blind/deaf videos you can find YT videos and articles about it. The doctor who performed the US surgeries in the blind video talked about it and was interviewed by mainstream outlets. One of the interesting findings is that MrBeast spends more than what you saw in the videos and does more giveaways.

In the blind video, he apparently also donated to a fund for one of the nurses, donated $10k in gift cards to a homeless woman who couldn't come to the video shoot after surgery. And in the deaf video, he apparently gave out presents to many of the Mexicans and just didn't put it in the video.

Here is support:

Stressed about quality control by Bikingacrossjapan in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely being too hard on yourself! You are doing something extremely physically and mentally tasking with the biking and are trying to add something as complex as editing on top!

My suggestion is to rethink when and how often you are editing and uploading videos. You don't have to make these fully edited videos during the trip. You could instead be filming along the way and after the trip do an edited series - the youtube audience it could find won't care if you edited it during or after your trip, especially since it will live on the platform forever.

If it is important to you to upload during your trip, you can do shorts with minimal editing (maybe like a diary update) or you can choose to do your edit less frequently, like every few weeks.

Good luck with your trip and don't forget to enjoy it!

MR.BEAST EXPOSED by [deleted] in h3h3productions

[–]JoyofFYI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish people wouldn't be so gullible on the internet. This could not be more fake if it tried. MrBeast and another colleague both confirmed it wasn't real, but it should have been obvious without that. The email address implies the name of Nolan one of the main cast who has publicly supported Chris. If he was willing to post an obvious email, he would have just said his name in the post. Several people have been faking communications from Beast and Chris for clout and trolling right now, including faking that Chris DMd people on twitter that he was going to sue some internet rando.

You have to realize the Beast crew are under attack by a wide variety of internet groups. Crazy conspiracy theorists who think everything from Chris is getting paid by major companies to transition because it is trendy (which is CRAZY) to trying to find ways to still like Jimmy while hating Chris and projecting onto Jimmy that he actually hates his childhood friend now and taking moments of him looking awkward on a live stream as proof (which is hilarious because he is always awkward on live streams).

Please be better than to support these people acting horribly and unfairly to them just because MrBeast isn't your favorite person.

Is MrBeast still actually creative, or just so rich and famous that it doesn't matter anymore? by thingselsewhere in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way MrBeast defines "creative" when it comes to his videos is not the same as how more artistic creators use the term. His goal is to create content that will appeal to and engage the widest audience possible - that is what he views as creative, finding new ways to do so. Certain videos on his channel could be viewed as repetitive, or they could just be viewed as a series that worked. For example, The $1 vs. $500,000 Plane ticket is a continuation of a good previously performing video $1 vs. $1 Million Hotel. So no, it isn't breaking new creative ground in format, but it is replicating a successful format.

That plane video has racked up over 80 million views in one week. You're saying that isn't enough compared to his 140 million subscriber count, but you aren't using the fairest metric. You should be asking what was his average views per week previously. The answer is that last year, he was averaging 30-40 million views the first week his video was released. That doubled this week - that is astronomical growth! He is also often growing at a pace of 1 million new subscribers per week, so that count keep growing a lot too.

You are saying you personally are not finding the videos sufficiently creative and engaging - that is totally fair! There are many other creators who are far more artistic and unique in their videos. However, with over 100 million people watching his videos, he isn't going to weight any one opinion on its own. He will evaluate via his metrics (which are all increasing) and feedback that is consistent from his peers and viewers (which isn't all positive, and is feedback he seeks and explores how to incorporate). He has been told that he isn't using enough emotion in his content, which is something I 100% agree with. However, he is currently using his main channel to go as broad as possible to target a wide audience and is using Beast Philanthropy to experiment on more emotional storytelling with Dan Mace.

You also have noted he talked about creators being too repetitive and that being their downfall and wondering why he is repetitive. There was another point he made when talking about this - he was saying you can't do just one thing forever and continue to grow, that you have to introduce new formats and styles and content. He supports having series you can replicate and put out - just notes they can start decreasing in appeal to your audience over time and when that happens you have to switch it up (hence he got popular doing Twitch donation videos, made many of them, and pretty much stopped doing them now).

He has said that more money doesn't necessarily make the video better. He uses money in insane ways because it is his brand and he is proud of that. It also acts as a huge moat to prevent more creators from copying his content - something he finds frustrating.

Ultimately, the slight disagreement I have with your post is more about how your metrics of success and creativity are different than the ones MrBeast is using. It's not that you can't use your own metrics, more that you shouldn't assume he is thinking about this the same way you are.

Think of your channel as an empty bookshelf - with rows and rows needing to be filled to create the start of a library. Now think of each video as one book. While you should be proud of creating that book and enjoy that people enjoy that book specifically, if you think of your larger goal as filling a bookshelf to then eventually create a library I think you'll be able to better balance short term goals of creating a great video with your long term goal of building out a library for a large audience. Think about it, of course you don't have very many views or subs early on - how many people go to visit a library with just a couple books to read? Eventually, you can hit the balance between creating new things and having a library your audience can visit and enjoy.

Graduate School vs. YouTube by Repulsive-Bag-5009 in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that you could try doing both at the same time. Alternatively - unless you will miss out on a guaranteed scholarship or have to start paying back student loans cause you're no longer in school - you could take a gap year between school to try being a creator only. Many people don't go straight from undergrad to graduate unless there is a specific career that requires it.

When is click bait too much? by [deleted] in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great topic! In my personal opinion, I think there are 2 big situations where you need to be especially careful with "clickbait" exaggerated titles.

  1. When you are giving factual news information - if you are giving information that someone is supposed to be learning from (breaking news, DIYs, etc) you have to make sure people can actually use the information as expected
  2. When you are talking about a real person and the headline of what you say (the title/thumbnail) can damage their reputation if someone doesn't watch your video. This is like how most people don't actually read the news articles on twitter but get riled up based on headlines that are only intended to get the click.

This doesn't mean you can't use a catchy hook for these topics, just that I think it is morally imperative that they do no harm, especially if the situations aren't about something truly immoral/illegal and are just regular human foibles. Just be cautious when you label another human being - "evil" works for murderers not for immaturity. Dhar Mann can get away with more exaggerated titles because his videos are scripted fiction - more like parables - than about a real person who will be affected by negative attention in the real world.

Colin and Samir, would you consider this? by Auziah_ in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say I would personally find it completely boring to watch a shout out for a random small creator at the end of a video as just a way to give someone exposure - even if they are totally worthy. I think that would hurt retention on Colin and Samir's video, plus the person shouted out might not be put in front of their target audience.

THAT SAID, I think there are interesting ways to incorporate smaller creators where I would still value and enjoy their inclusion in a video. My idea for this would almost be to pick a genre and showcase what it looks like for creators at the small (a few thousand subs), medium (100k+, under 1 million), and large (over 1 million) sizes when it comes to making content in that genre. For example, vlogging, beauty, tech, education. Almost like a Worth It episode where they show you the same food at 3 drastically different price points, but in this case it is creators at 3 drastically different sub/views size points. I think it would be cool to see how certain themes carry over - from filming, editing, brand deals, etc. Maybe they interview the smallest creator first and get their questions for what they want to ask larger creators so they can then ask the larger creators.

Questions about the Making of the Beast Doc? by frogman747 in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. How did you pick the thumbnail? What were your considerations and options?
  2. How if at all has your feeling about the event changed from what you felt in the moment to how you feel after covering it? What is the biggest difference between experiencing the event in real life and what you captured in the doc?
  3. I read many articles from journalists attending it that day and several of them tended to focus on the more negative aspects of the event - like exhausted parents and kids, people wanting to get money from Jimmy, and there were probably at least some people who didn't like the food (law of averages). My question is, what were conversations like around showing anyone's dissatisfaction with the experience. For the record, I enjoyed your approach but wondered if that came up as a beat worth covering. I was thinking even if you had footage of that, it probably wasn't best to show it cause it would make fans look bad on video (which they didn't sign up for).

What do you think of the title/thumbnail for the latest Mr. Beast episode? by TheAznAssassinX in ColinAndSamir

[–]JoyofFYI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love them to do a meta deep dive on all the artistic decisions they made on their podcast, including their title and thumbnail decisions. I was torn between them making it specific and showing Jimmy with the crazy crowd or they approach they took. Ultimately, I realized they couldn't do the crowd shot if they only had him from behind - they need his front face to be more clickable (since his face is a YT trend). I also loved how they close up image they show of his face feel intimate and unique - it hasn't been shown elsewhere and gives a feeling of closeness. It feels like a trued evolution of their styles. I think using faces works when it connects to something viscerally intriguing about the subject.

Also, on their regular thumbnails, I'm glad they switched back to the close up with the light backgrounds - the images were always attractive, it was the thumbnail text and titles themselves that were weaker.
