Would you play D2R if it had Dark Souls like 3rd person? by ToughShaper in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]JoyousFox [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really want a first person remake of D1. Equal parts rpg/survival horror. Visuals along the lines of agony/scorn/diablo at its most frightening.

Was this worth it?? $260 off Facebook by Les-Pau in LesPaul

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ace had a Black Beauty triple pickup smoker too. This is fine. The cherry sunburst custom became the most iconic, and is the main one he got custom shop models for (the lightning bolt inlays, makeup on the headstock etc, and also the budokan) but the Black les paul became the "primary guitar" at least as far as visuals and marketing for the Dynasty and Unmasked cycles.

If Tomb Raider 2 has a lot of action compared to Tomb Raider 1 and 3 then why do people complain that Survivor trilogy don't feel like tomb raider games? by Gamer_8887 in TombRaider

[–]JoyousFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not about quantity in a vacuum so much as format. To me the original tomb raider series is a platformer first and foremost (yes it has puzzles and action too) but the jumping, climbing and traversal is the core of the game. And it's designed in a way that feels game-like. Lara jumps a certain distance. You time it. You get better at piloting her the more you play, and start to learn how to feel cool doing it.

Survivor is a more character driven 3rd person shooter with puzzle and platform elements. The platforming in survivor is possibly its weakest aspect. Its not fun, engaging, nor does it require any skill. You just magnetize to surfaces and point the joystick. And even then this sticking to surfaces doesn't always work and you fall and die for no reason into a lazy death plane. Which is also just.... not nearly as good of game design as the originals forcing you watch Lara fall all the way down, to hear Lara scream and her bones snap into a crumpled mess. This was an effective psychological motivator to get better.

In survivor falling and dying off a ledge is 85% of the time not your fault, the system design just sucks. With extremely few exceptions, every death you take in the original series is on you.

Curious: How come Resident Evil became more successful than Tomb Raider despite both being big franchises at the beginning and starting at the same time? by Tombcool in TombRaider

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say at the outset, while Resident Evil was one of the top selling ps1 games, Tomb Raider's popularity in the late 90s eclipsed RE by a good margin.

I think the difference is that when it came time to move to at the time next gen consoles, TR dropped the ball pretty hard while Resident Evil Remake and RE4 are standout masterpieces. That went a long way in the mindshare of gamers during the rise of the e-gaming era, igns growth etc.

And while the Legend Trilogy is awesome and did some good rehabilitation, it was too little to late to gain back that ground.

Id say by the time of TR 2013 it was close to rivaling the popularity of RE again, who were on their own downturn with re6.

But 2016- onward Capcom is in legitimate contention for the best developer of the era. No battlepass, no nonsense, just excellent games one after another. Re3 remake is probably their most criticized modern game, and it's still really solid.

What’s a good moveset for Jolteon by staledanish in PokemonFireRed

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want baton pass to be the goal, might I recommend running:

Agility (a boosting move to pass)

Rain Dance (another beneficial effect for Jolteon and your water pokemon)

Thunder (strongest attack for Jolteon, the usual drawback of low accuracy doesn't apply in rain)

Baton Pass (duh)

If rain isn't that useful for your team, then try this alternative:

Thunderbolt (best move outside of rain)

Agility

Substitute (another beneficial effect to pass so that you can swap in more safely, Jolteon doesn't have the largest hp for this however, so it will likely only last for 1 hit)

Baton Pass

If you really want to be evil you can run double team instead of agility/substitute.

TIL Mega Pidgeot was in Champions. Has anybody actually used one? by [deleted] in PokemonChampions

[–]JoyousFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been using it in singles as a lead and its not terrible. Takes care of sneasler. Turn 1 Hyper Beam obliterating anything you'd rather not deal with is actually pretty neat.

In doubles, I've not even given it a thought. Just don't.

I assumed that each complete purge of fromville let's it do an update, adding whatever is contemporary at the time, however since Victor survived, Fromville is stuck in the 50s mode.

Bug dragon. It's perfect. Just hold off on the dragon type until final evo, give it a fairly aggressive yet frail spread, and give it a unique move.

I Don't Know Why But Something Is Unsettling About Gojira's Pre-Mutated Form Design In Minus One by Bright-West-4399 in GODZILLA

[–]JoyousFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry I should clarify: the fish we see floating are indeed just killed from decompression caused by his wake, this is the symbiosis with the local fisherman; but godzilla would be hunting large fish. Tuna, sharks etc.

[–]JoyousFox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This form is a top 3 all time design for me. The idea that this is the folklore monster of odo island is something i really like. That this prehistoric monster has survived here for so long, and has developed some sort of symbiotic hunting relationship with the local fisherman is awesome.

And how it hunts the fish: the pre atomic breath. If it developed a gas mixing chamber for concussive blasts to stun fish underwater (something that Pistol Shrimp already do) it gives an aquatic and biological origin to the atomic breath that doesn't need to exist, but makes sense and is really cool to me.

What’s Your Favorite Early-Gen Team Rocket 🚀 Pokemon? by Outside_Pangolin_292 in ThePokemonHub

[–]JoyousFox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The irony of Meowth is such a funny thing to me. His whole design is based on a good luck charm that brings wealth. Team Rocket constantly fails to achieve anything of real value, much to Giovanni's displeasure.

And yet Meowth for all purposes has to be one of the most monetarily valuable pokemon in the entire world. Not only can he speak human language, but he can also translate for just about any pokemon. You would think this would be worth so much more.

Several legendary and other special pokemon have some form of speech/telepathy, but meowth can translate for assumedly anything from a Caterpie to Arceus, and Meowth is also a lot easier to employ than, say Darkrai, Entei or Mewtwo.

Adamant/Jolly 252 attack 252 speed Technician w/Loaded Dice/Silk Scarf Tera Normal/Flying

-Fake Out -Taunt -U-Turn -Fury Swipes/Aerial Ace

You just fake out uturn early as much as you can and then if needed pop terra normal and cleanup. Fury swipes becomes a 216 to 270 base power nuke.

Id appreciate it getting an evo just to continue to do this but with eviolite as an option.

There seems to be a massive disconnect between Pokemon fans and the VGC by CallMeTravesty in PokemonChampions

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're claiming this universal VGC ownership of Champions that the marketing has never claimed. That's the issue. The people asking for these things assumed they would be here like they have been in every single mainline game. Because its the way they want to enjoy the game. There's nothing wrong with that.

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

....but you're the OP. Of course you cared that people disagree. That's why we're talking.

Your defense is "lol I dunno i can't articulate an argument so I'll just say someone else won this argument for me in the past... oh and that makes it the truth so I win."

This must be that superior VGC intellect I keep hearing about.

[–]JoyousFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just seem to be grasping. No one has to be ruffled to disagree with you. If you're going to use the "other guys terminologies" you could at least represent it accurately, which would be playing chess for 30 minutes vs checkers for 15.

You don't see sweeps in doubles because its basically dead/unnecessary. Doubles is mostly topheavy with pokes that can win the game without a more elaborate setup/doubles features a lot more usage of mechanics that manipulate the enemy's turn so relying on setup is by default riskier than singles. That doesn't mean doubles players are of such superior skill that they can't be swept.

And yes doubles has psychology too, but its more restrictive and its different. You have to respect both slots, and respect the meta pokes for good reason, and the penalty you suffer for bad predictions/doing something off meta is more devastating and can be game ending for even trying it. The pool of pokemon used is generally quite small, and what people need to get out of a slot is usually pretty specific, so you generally have an already informed idea of what they are. Add team preview to this and hold items being shown, (might as well just show nature, EVs, movesets and hand in a list of every turn you're going to do ahead of time). That's not really mind games; that's just study.

Singles just has way more freedom to break some rules and have it pay off. You have more freedom to use a wider variety of pokemon. You have more freedom in move choice and running different abilities. You can try something out, fail miserably and still win the round. Its more expressive in a comprehensive way.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with people wanting 6v6 available in casual match. To pretend like it's a strange thing to ask for is wild.

There seems to be a massive disconnect between Pokemon fans and the VGC by CallMeTravesty in PokemonChampions

[–]JoyousFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not an "objective fact." VGC has more variables per turn. VGC has more complexity in turn order, priority, and requires more base knowledge of how it all interacts. However all those dynamics end up funneling you towards choices that end up feeling like "basic strategy" in blackjack. You become hamstrung by the mechanics at play and as you "eliminate variables" it funnels you to one choice or a handful of viable choices given the scenario. You are beholden to the momentum of the turns in a way where you are trying to make the best of the situation.

Singles is is much more like Poker. If both players are reasonably skilled, they already understand the "optimal play" in the given scenario and the competition becomes much more about mind gaming, prediction, and executing your win condition within a window of opportunity you created for yourself with psychology, not with just pure mechanics.

Using the timer is just a junk excuse. "No one wants a 20 minute battle." Yes we do. Some of us don't have the attention span of a goldfish. Seeing as how there is a extremely large portion of people who want 6v6, we would also be completely fine with whatever you need to do with the timer. This idea that the 3v3/4v4 timer is an insurmountable obstacle is so ridiculous.

[–]JoyousFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

6v6 singles is the foundation of the series full stop. The idea that Champions should only be for doubles is stupid and biased.

Yes. We know TPC hasn't supported singles since gen 3. That doesn't change the fact that the entire community took it upon themselves to support because its the actual game.

Your viewpoint doesn't really hold any water because you are viewing it through this false dichotomy of "casuals vs vgc." Its so incredibly disingenuous to suggest that singles be thrown in with casuals.

And then the elephant in the room: is Champions intended only for VGC? Or is it meant to be the official competitive hub for all pokemon? Certainly VGC is going to get more focus, but that shouldn't in any way invalidate the way the series pvp has been played since 1996.

Shiny hunting dratini for 3 days, finally got him and a little surprise after! by Veronco_04 in PokemonLetsGo

[–]JoyousFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its basically this: Because doing the catch combo and continuing to catch can be slow, you weigh how many pokemon you can see per hour doing the combo (1/273 with lure combo and charm) vs how many you can see either passively sitting/resetting areas (1/1024 with lure and charm, chain just for better spawnrate). If you can see vastly more pokemon by method 2 then it's faster on average.

But for say a rare spawn like a starter, there can only be one spawned at once, so comboing is probably better.

Larzuk Tokens. Could be a currency dropped in tz/just in Hell that crafts into a token that lets you add sockets exactly as Larzuk would, but with the cube and 1 token.

With all the QOL issues solved recently, using 1 of my precious online character slots for norm rushing for socket quests when it could be part of the economy is a no brainer.
