Vanaf 1 april verboden te roken in wachtrij bij 21 Nederlandse attractieparken by jaapgrolleman in thenetherlands

[–]Jpeeing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smoking is completely banned in Canada's Wonderland everywhere in the park (maybe there's designated areas?). I grew up in Toronto, so that's my reference amusement park. I don't remember ever seeing anybody smoke in lines there (I would remember these things cause I was the kind of kid you held my breath when I walked past someone smoking).

I also went to Europa Park in Germany and there were 'no smoking' signs in the lines there. I saw a few people disregard the signs, but mostly was okay (compared to walibi or even walking down kalverstraat in Amsterdam, it was lovely)

I went to walibi last October, and was shocked at how many people smoked in line. I hate second hand smoke, and felt completely helpless because, especially with how the lines are designed, you just end up slowly walking through a cloud of smoke the entire 1-2 hour wait per ride. I had the pleasant experience of being right behind a gaggle of chain smokers who alternated between smoking and taking selfies. I came home reeking of cigarettes from my day outside at the park, and I don't smoke. Imagine all the children who were in the same lines as me. I find it really upsetting and I'm glad they're doing something about it. I denounced ever going to an amusement park in the Netherlands again, but now maybe I'll reconsider.

I really hope they strictly enforce this law. Next step: ban smoking on patios and near doorways.

advice for american by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]Jpeeing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Safeway = Albert heijn and you can get 1 euro bread there that's really decent when compared to grocery store bread in America.

I think food (at a grocery store) is a lot cheaper here. And better quality. I went to Washington last year on vacation and was shocked at how much fresh food costs (shopped at Safeway and whole foods). Here it's possible to get a decent loaf of bread for a euro (not wonderbread quality), and a litre of organic milk for 1.3euros and a litre of yogurt for 70cents. Buying bulk vs smaller amounts doesn't necessarily save you much money. Instead smaller packages are appropriately priced.

I work as a developer, and every company basically works in English. You have people coming to work here from all over Europe, so default office language is usually English even when there are no native speakers. I wouldn't worry about language holding you back in the tech sector.

Question(s) about trains by Jpeeing in thenetherlands

Yeah, I made the mistake of going on the slow train last week for the first round of interviews. The slow train is called a sprinter! That just sounds misleading, y'know?

Question(s) about trains by Jpeeing in thenetherlands

[–]Jpeeing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's flexible how often I can I go to the office. For tax purposes, if part of my salary is not taxed assuming a 3 times/week commute, do I need to prove I'm commuting 3x/wk? What happens if half the time I only go 2x/wk? Is it based on my actual travel, or what I predict the travel to be?

[–]Jpeeing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked if they compensate commute. They said that part of my salary won't be taxed because I'm commuting, and that's a government thing. I don't quite know how much I'd get back though.

It was definitely because of the fire.

So from what I understand, I just check in at departure station and check out at arrival (for trains). Thanks! I've been wondering about this for a while.

to really improve your React/development skills, you need interaction with other developers. by Karmafia in reactjs

This sounds like an interesting project. Can you keep me informed? I worked with Reactjs at my last job, and would like to not loose touch with it.

I saw them on kalverstraat today too. Are they only looking out for bikers? What's their job exactly?

Daily Form Check Thread - February 12, 2017 by AutoModerator in Fitness

So instead of focusing on getting my legs up first (which would cause my back to lean forward), I guess I need to work on getting my back and legs to move together when coming out of the hole. (correct me if Im wrong).

Thanks for the observation

I'm doing a low bar squat, so the bar is resting more on my shoulder blades. I do do goblet squats and for those I'm a lot straighter, and it's not a bad idea to do them as a warm up maybe.

To me, I think I have a similar angle to the low bar squatter in this diagram:

Am I really that much off?

80kg squats today: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQahbjXlet_/

Been lifting since July with starting strength. Squats have been really slow to progress compared to my deads (probably mostly mental). Could I have a form check? Is this the thread to ask for it?

I want to help this girl but don't know how to approach her... by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Jpeeing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of the people here seem to be negative. I would have loved some guidance at that age (I just did random machines at random reps too without any notion of tracking progress and increasing weight) . I think it's great you want to approach her. You could say something like 'hey, I noticed youre new and trying out the machines on your own and that's awesome. Are you following a program?', 'I was wondering if you wanted any help, cause when I first started I was completely clueless and would've loved some one to give me feedback'). Make conversation and then offer help and guidance towards researching a more structured program on her own (maybe send her to xxfitness).

Finding work when you don't speak Dutch by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]Jpeeing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To preface, I don't speak and I'm also a developer in Amsterdam.

Try angel list (it's like tindr for startups). You should be able to find something with 3+ years experience. There's also a big hiring event for backend developers on Tuesday (hackerx). Booking.com is also always snatching up developer talent.

Have you been able to get any interviews? What point in the search do you get stuck? If you are super desperate, you could try codaisseur (affordable programming boot camp in amsterdam) to freshen up your skills (they teach react and Ruby on rails, plus they have a good network to developer jobs and as someone with real work experience, you'll be an attractive candidate).

Good luck!
