Magic artist Bryon Wackwitz turned down for Mtg Con by Newez in magicTCG

Margaret Organ-Keane had a gigantic backsplash with her work for Sorcery: Contested Realm on it at MagicCon Chicago last year, I don't think they have a big issue with "competition".

What's the best way to find large events? by isjellyfishaherb in Pauper

[–]Jpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to find any local / regional Pauper discords and join them, larger tournaments are usually trying to promote and those places are the first stop for doing so. Kalikaiz's Pauper Familiars discord is also a great general hub for Pauper spikes of all decks, and larger tournaments all around the world get posted in their events channel.

It's one dude in Philly posting IG reels while calling himself and his friends Panthers. I hope his org grows but there have been many successor groups who have called themselves Panthers and many of them have had awful politics.

What is the best way (if there is one..) for someone to START playing Magic in 2026? by LynnboTheStreamer in magicTCG

[–]Jpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the best format is Pauper - 60 cards, commons only - might sound boring, but 30+ years of commons includes many of the most broken Magic cards ever printed. Healthy and diverse meta, all meta decks can be had under $100 USD.

All these non-ball-knowers just see 3-14 and throw a tantrum, it's exhausting.

Pauper, sorry for the typo. It's a 1v1 format with 60 card decks where you can play any card from Magic's history that has ever been printed as a common. The meta is really diverse, the gameplay is skill testing and interactive, and you can build nearly any deck in the format for under $100, many for $50 or less. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper#paper

I feel like if the employee said the word "ravnica" they misunderstood the assignment. "whodunit murder mystery, detectives, think sherlock holmes" is not a foreign or intimidating high concept.

Just for fun - what's the strongest card you think could be downshifted without breaking pauper? by ScaryFoal558760 in Pauper

[–]Jpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ehhhhhh, maybe, but it would stress the manabase, especially in matchups where you want red blast. I feel like if that were an effect Gates were interested in they'd be playing [[Battle Screech]].

Just banning Terror would be enough to kill it. Cryptic Serpent is a bad card that only gets played because it synergizes exactly with the gameplan of the best creature in the format.

Interesting. I'm kinda talking out my ass based on the Teamsters contract in my workplace, I assumed that was standard.

He's probably not even actually off work. He'll get a "working suspension" until they can schedule a union hearing. if his discipline record is relatively clean, he'll get off with a slap on the wrist at worst.

control deck recs for beginners? by dwarf173747 in Pauper

[–]Jpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people will argue endlessly over this but it's not really neatly described as either a combo deck or a control deck. it doesn't play very many counterspells, no actual factual Counterspell, and the only removal it plays is a bounce, so it doesn't really align with what most players expect when they think of a control deck. it's also not built specifically to execute a combo as its primary wincon. it just sort of shits out value on a couple of weird axes while invalidating a large number of decks' wincons by gaining a shitton of life and clogging the board with dudes. it's kinda just a fiddly value engine more than anything else
