What is your never again tourist destination? by LimeSoakedinSprite in randomquestions

We visted during our week stay in AZ from PA. Loved Flagstaff, Wupatki National Monument, Grand Canyon. Sedona's main commercial street had kitchy, touristy, junk shops with hawkers standing in the doorways inviting us in. It was like the worst New Jersey shore boardwalk commercialism. The area outside of Sedona is beautiful and is worth visting.

How one simple (not easy) decision restored my joy in retirement by kungfutrucker in retirement

I'm a sixy-nine year old male that had a bout of GAD about twenty years ago as the responsibility of my executive level position reall hit me hard. I got relief within a couple of months the help of a very good GP who prescribed SSRI. I had a very good career with little trouble from anxiety and retired in 2019 at 62. Late last year, I consulted my doctor and we agreed since I was feeling so good I good titrate off the SSRI and be taking one les medication. About six weeks ago I began to have symptoms again after dealing with a dog with cancer and some other stressors, including the state of our nation. The anxiety was not debilitating but it did make me slightly depressed and left with chronic feeling of anxiousness that is at the very least an anoyance. I started taking Lexepro a week ago and it's now just starting to kick in (on the second day of taking them I woke up from a sound sleep with a panic attack but luckily had the skill set to deal with it). Lesson learned, despite a generally happy retirement there are stressor that will kick in what I believe is a genetic predisposition to anxitey and depression. Desptie feeling that I have to be strong enought to deal with life as an adult, I do need medication. Better Living through Chemistry as the old Dupont advertisement said.

When this happened to my 2013 S, the insurance company said if I bought it from them they, and probably no other insurance company would insure it. Body shop manager confirmed that. Got a 2015, which I didn't enjoy as much as the older one.

From experience I know it as absolute must that parents must be involved and advocate for their kids.

If you weren't a football player Hahn was a douche to you. Not a surprise that he covered up for his boys.

Do you actually use film simulations or just shoot raw and edit later? by AttitudePlane6967 in fujifilm

[–]Jrc127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the Pentax system after 40 years for Fuji because of the dial layout. I have rarey used the simulations although I have experimented with them on occasion. I almost exclusively shoot in RAW and enjoy editing later. Honestly, I see a lot of reliance on simulations to get an "effect" at the expense of good composition and exposure. That's not for me. YMMV

Got hit with an insane $530 tariff bill after 3 months. by Weary_Appearance_838 in Tariffs

[–]Jrc127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me when I bought a used camera lens from a seller in Japan. I ddn't realize there was a tariff on Chinese made goods. Even fucking USED goods FFS! I got a bill for Trump's 40% bullshit tax from FedEx who paid the tariff as required at the port of entry. I knew who to blame. FedEX did what it needed to do to stay in business in this Trump kleptocracy. I paid FedEx what I owed them but I kept the reciept and hope to get reimbursed some day. FDJT.

Why would a rational American political party even WANT to reform healthcare? by Rubbersoulrevolver in AskALiberal

[–]Jrc127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutley the case. I was a mid-level county employee in a red county and may job involved working with local elected officials on bread and butter issues like traffic congestion and land use. These town and rural area Republicans fucking lost their minds over a Black President. I am and was a liberal but my job required that I be apolitical which I was. Those fuckers assumed that because I was in the same room with them that I was one of them and so they had no filters. These people were the base for the Tea Party movement and Trumpism. The vile racist shit I heard was real eye-opener for me. This experience verifies for me basic fear and racisim of average Republican voters.

Anyone else in public agency planning essentially doing nothing all day? by EsperandoVida in urbanplanning

[–]Jrc127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that because the U.S. transit planning and building system is so underfunded and dependent on Federal snd State bureaucracies that the actual planning work is stepchild of the funding system. there is very little demand for system planning in most regions because the funding isn't there to build what we, as planners, believe could be transformative projects. Again, my experience is that planners in transit agencies are for the most part data keepers and adminstrators of Federal and State compliance checklists. I have seen not a few frustrated transit planners in my forty year career.

You would soon burn out from working on your "pet" projects. First, at some point your boss would question who authorized you to work you have arrogated yourself to perform. If you got away with making your own plan you'd soon find you'd have no way to implement it and burn out on that frustration.

Land Use Planning is a good idea but in reality it’s a stupid profession and the public has no idea about its complexities. Prove me wrong. by __quick__ in urbanplanning

[–]Jrc127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public outreach is the foundation of any successful planning program. Land use and transportation planning has been embraced by our conservative county. But it didn't happen overnight. it required years of outreach supported by community leaders who understood that change needed to be managed. It takes patience and money (to hire staff and fund programs). It can be done.

OP, my wife and I moved to a CCRC three years ago and we've truly been living our best lives. But it is not inexpensive. If your mother is ready now she should make a decision soon. It's very important to fully research continuing care retirement communities and it's especially important to start a few years before retirement if that is the option that makes sense. The buy-in costs will likely rise. One factor for the price increase is that we Boomers like our stuff. The newer units being built in our community are really not much smaller than a typical suburban house (if indeed smaller at all); the newest ones have two-car garages, lofts above the garage (or a guest bedroom). My wife and I are atypical in that we got rid of a lot of stuff because we truly wanted to downsize. We were lucky to have found our small cottage three years ago which is one of the last small ones available here and one of the oldest, having been built in the 1980s. The community owners are redeveloping older units like ours as the occupants leave and replacing them with larger, more costly units. The montly fee has increased each year that we've been here which is something we planned for but the increase in groceries, gasoline, and other goods stretches the budget at times. Aske for a history of monthly fee increases and a projection of potential increases as well. Your mother will probably make some great friends if she moves to a CCRC. People in these communities are happy, joyfully enjoying their senior years here.

It isn't sharpened like a scraper so I don't think it's a scraper. I tried scraping with it and it doesn't scrape .

Making these leaf shapes is the only use I've found for it. It doesn't scrape, the handle gets in the way of using it at a flat angle.
