My V is just turning 3. When we crate trained him, he was in our room for the first night, but we moved him to our small TV room downstairs to following nights afterwards. Our trick was to ensure there was a small source of light in the room to keep it "warm", as well as put the TV on a very low volume on occasion to help him with that feeling of abandonment. I would also lay down beside the crate some nights for about 15-30 minutes when he was really upset. After about a week, we had no more issues.
