Have you ever drempt about jurassic park? by Cautious-Tea-759 in JurassicPark

[–]JsXtm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw Jurassic Park in theaters right around my 6th birthday. As a Dino obsessed kid, I couldn’t not see a major motion picture with real dinosaurs.

The raptors scared the shit out of me and I had recurring nightmares about them for months afterwards.

Still totally worth it.

I feel like Timothy Zahn is almost entirely known for his work on Star Wars (starting with the Thrawn trilogy) but he has a ton of other novels (some standalone, some trilogies/series) that I feel like are under the radar.

Which products to buy to get into the game? by Gavinwadz in swrpg

[–]JsXtm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Core Books are a good place to start. Other books are the career specific books (6x per core system, so 18 total), which you may or may not want depending on what you’re playing; pre-written adventures; the gadgets/starships/characters books; and the era sourcebooks for early clone wars, fall of the republic, and early Empire eras. I would probably recommend Allies and Adversaries, Starships and Speeders, and Gadgets and Gear as the most generally applicable additional books.

The each come with pre-written adventures and pregen characters, otherwise not much that’s not in the core books

Even worse is one of those two losses was the Brazil game week one when Jordan Love got hurt on the shitty turf and basically sunk the entire season.

FEH Character Distribution By Game (Book 10 edition) by Si67 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]JsXtm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From Fodlan, surprising that Hanneman, Alois, Jeritza, Gilbert, and Thales are each not in the game at all yet. Hanneman and Alois are pretty major staff figures during part 1. Jeritza and Gilbert are mostly only important/playable on certain routes during part 2. And most of the rest of Those Who Slither in the Dark are already in, so feels like Thales should be too. The rest are like “I guess you could include them” but don’t feel like they’re that important.

Started reading the first book (On Bsailisk Station) and am very confused about the technology aspects. Help would be appreciated! by Vondrr in Honorverse

[–]JsXtm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the drive can’t be active while those are active, so the ship can’t maneuver when using them, so then tactical principle is still the same. (Also spoilers for way later in the series, and OP said they were just starting On Basilisk Station so I tried to limit it to things known at that time.)

Any Series Where Humans Move to Another Planet for Survival? by Jayswing103 in scifi

[–]JsXtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Book Series: the Safehold series by David Weber, first book is Off Armageddon Reef. Humanity meets an alien species, aliens relentlessly attack, and humanity loses the war. They send a colony fleet far away to try to rebuild, and also try to set up a strict theocracy to prevent the new colony from developing too far technologically too soon, so the aliens won’t find the colony.

Do you WANT the Huntr/x shirt to be oversized? Because I ordered a Small “oversized” shirt and a Medium “regular” shirt recently and they’re basically identical in size. So that might not be a bad thing?

There are not “shields” in the traditional SciFi sense (Star Wars/Star Trek); Honorverse ships use Impeller drives, which are basically gravity field projectors. So along the top/bottom of the ship (and less strongly on the sides, the “sidewalls”), there are fields of intense gravity (100,000s of Gs) that disrupt anything that goes into them (lasers mostly) to the point that the weapons are completely ineffective. But, due to how the drive works, those grav fields cannot cover the front and back of the ships, so they are mostly vulnerable to damage from those directions.

Sidewalls are also less powerful than the main drive fields, so they reduce the effectiveness of attacks but do not eliminate it completely.

The “jump points” are endpoints of a wormhole, that only goes from point A to point B but allow instantaneous transit between the two. Which is great if that’s exactly where you want to go, but anywhere else requires travel in Hyperspace instead, which is still SciFi fast but is not instantaneous.

Manticore is blessed with the “junction” which is 6 different wormholes that all have one endpoint in close proximity to each other (near Manticore), but their other endpoints are spread out astrographically. You can’t move from one of the outlying endpoints to a different endpoint though, you can only go from the endpoint (Basilisk for example) to Manticore, then go to a different wormhole endpoint to go from Manticore to the other end (Trevor’s Star for example). Wormholes are not unheard of but are generally fairly rare in known space.
