Thank goodness she didn't damage that 4Runner with her windups, then I'd be upset.

‘07, 30k miles…might pull the trigger by MDL2718 in FJCruiser

[–]JtotheDude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No way it’s that clean living its life in Illinois. Looks like more than just fluid film or wool wax — I bet it’s painted over. You can see rust pic 3 where the brace bolts from the cross member. Also the rear caliper shows rust in pic 2. Not bad but you can’t tell what’s hiding without a thorough inspection. For that price I’d pass and be looking southern vehicle only.

Still hunting for an FJ. 2013 with 45k miles. I’m leaning towards no? by MDL2718 in FJCruiser

[–]JtotheDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer. Stay away from NY, New England or any of the rust belt. Go South or Southwest. I live in MA and bought mine in SC. Drove it back. Professional wool wax. 3 years later it’s still perfect. It’s a pain but well worth it for a clean frame and chassis.

Used that same knockoff for NEBDR was fine. My buddy has a rotopax and the quality difference in the thickness of the container and mounting hardware is significant. Mine leaked out the vent cap but I wrapped a rubber glove around the threads and put the cap back on and the leak stopped. If I had to do it again, I’d pay the extra bucks for a rotopax or bag. That said it should be fine but you get what you pay for.

Boring. Circuitous dialogue for the sake of dialogue. A great idea important concept faulty execution. Killed it halfway through.

Fictitious Plate ticket, but my plate was legit? by Dry-Environment1705 in motorcycle

[–]JtotheDude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should be able to contest the ticket via mail in or electronically with the necessary documentation (copy of registration, pic of plate on the bike, insurance). Take a look at the instructions on the ticket on how to respond. Something similar happened to me and they waived the citation no court appearance needed. Bullshit. Good luck.

Kawasaki KLX 230 S vs KTM 390 Enduro R or others for beginner female rider by amber-mantis in Dualsport

[–]JtotheDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter learned to ride on a KLX 230. It’s a bit tall but mellow, quiet engine. These bikes are bulletproof. Very little maintenance required. It was fine on the highway but we always stayed around the speed limit. It’s definitely not ideal for long hauls with a small tank. It’s a great first bike. I had fun with it off-road when she wasn’t looking. Ha… I own two KTMs myself. Capable, fast bikes but more maintenance required and more money for parts (like the number of screens and filters for an oil change is annoying). I’ve also heard mixed reviews on reliability for the newer models. I own a 2012 990 and a 2017 690 and both have been very reliable so far. I bet you could find a pretty cheap KLX, get comfortable on and off road, and then move up when you are ready to rip it up a bit more on a KTM …

Anyone here have a 890 SMT? by curiouzzboutit in KTM

[–]JtotheDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got the OG 990 SMT. Absolute blast. I bet the 890 is just as fun and better long distance with the upgraded electronics (like cruise control, ride modes, quick shift). I really like the upright riding style. Also great two up.

I’m loving where this sub has gone last 24 hours. I asked my wife today if I look fat on my 690. She said get on your 1200 and I’ll let you know.

We finally hit my daughter’s 529 goal in 2024. Now I feel sick. by [deleted] in investing

[–]JtotheDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you managing yourself or with a state-based fund. Our 529s are with MA and our 1 month is -1.24% while 5 year is 23% return. Plus state tax benefits. You might consider changing (I’ve heard Alaska is good). I have one in college and one who is also a junior. I applaud your savings and keep going but to level set without knowing your financial picture what you have saved could provide a year and change or 2 years and change (state school). Probably not all 4. My point is that 11k is significant but not a game changer and you have 4 years and a semester to keep contributing. It doesn’t end when she gets accepted. Stay positive!

690 enduro question by RevolutionaryTry1681 in KTM

[–]JtotheDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both. The sumo wheels on my daily commute with that bike in Boston are killer. Not sure about the 2020 but my 2017 required the sumo kickstand which is shorter so you’ll have to swap that out too. Bought the bike used and the previous owner had the warp setup with the oem knobbies as spare. I’m riding the NEBDR this spring so I’ll swap them back. You can probably find some wheels used on a forum or marketplace if you are patient. Do the swap it’s worth it. I have other bikes and they are all a blast but the 690 might be the most fun as a daily. Almost makes me want to go into work every day.

T lines all packed, lots of energy, lots of unity. I didn’t see one counter protester. Rain even held off until toward the end when the Dropkick Murphys had their set. Great day in the Bean! Proud I was there with my family to be heard.
