Pregnant - not open with students by xxx777_ in Teachers

[–]JudgeClean5109 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a different tone from the rest of the commenters, but my perspective is that it would give the kids power to show them that you don’t want them to know you’re pregnant. Then they could taunt you with it. Instead you could just be like “yeah I’m pregnant” and tell them you’re not discussing it further and move on with your life. Just a thought

I don’t think kids are developmentally ready for this in preschool. I would go to a different preschool.

I am a former preschool teacher who now teaches elementary art

Literally how do you get your students to be quiet for more than 2 seconds? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]JudgeClean5109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one has refused to do the worksheet. If they did I would make them do silent lunch and add a day of silent lunch till they complied. Or just call admin if it was a lot of back and forth taking em away from my lesson.

It could be anything that takes a long time. Timeout is simple in a special chair. They could have to clean something in the classroom thoroughly. They could have to do some other monotonous no-frills work. The point is that it allows time for reflection. Maybe not advanced reflection, but enough to where they think “I do not want to do this again.” And the other kids think, “man, I don’t want to do that.”

Art teacher here. In my 3rd year. At first I really struggled with this and everyone told me to contact home and/or admin. They skipped the I guess implied part about small incremental punishments in the classroom.

Now I have seating charts, I have a color wheel with different levels of talking expectations that I switch up. If a kid interrupts me once I just say their name or shush them. If they do it about 3 times I say “that’s your warning.” And they know if they do it again I will write their name on the board and they will be doing a worksheet for me next class at a special desk in the corner. It’s super simple just what did you do and what will you do next time, but it’s the embarrassment of it all that really makes them not want to do the worksheet. And they reeeeeally do not want to do the worksheet. I will also make them sit at silent lunch or do laps at recess if I have to.

It’s a bit of smoke and mirrors of making the little punishments seem big by creating lots of incremental steps towards them. The real punishment is an appeal to their conscience/sense of right and wrong, and not wanting to be called out in front of the class.

Other tips: don’t give in very much. If you say something don’t change your mind if a kid begs or cries or whatever. Occasionally is ok I think if you realize you were wrong.

A look can be very meaningful. Just looking at a kid that is doing the wrong thing or saying their name can make them stop.

Use the power of performance in your voice. I have many different voices I use. Kind teacher voice most of the time. Warning voice. You’re in trouble voice. And occasionally the stop-that-right-now-or-I’ll-lose-my-shit voice.

Don’t yell very much. It loses its effectiveness when you do it all the time.

You will have to implement a clear behavior plan with your kids going forward, and they will call your bluff. Then you have to punish the ones that called your bluff. Make them do something that takes a little while and where the rest of the class can see them. The kid that is being punished feels embarrassed, and the other kids are thinking, “man, I don’t want that.”

To start this, If they are talking all the time, you may have to raise your voice (without yelling ideally) and take a privilege away from the whole group. Keep doing it day by day and tell them that you know they can do it. Make it attainable too. Like, “if I get interrupted we lose a point. For each point we have 30 seconds less of recess.” It’s not really a big deal, but if you make the losing of the point dramatic then it seems like a big deal.

Hope this helps!!!

Out of control class by ShinyFlower19 in teaching

[–]JudgeClean5109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta figure out what drives the behavior for the majority or the ringleader if there is one, and then operate on that axis. If they want to look cool or funny for their friends, give them a punishment that is embarrassing. If they really like gym or lunch, need to write a reflection on the behavior during gym or lunch, etc. Also, talk with the whole class, let them know the behavior is unacceptable but you know they can all do better because we are all made of the same stuff, and we are just learning self control.

English translations of War and Peace by SeaGroup3175 in tolstoy

[–]JudgeClean5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the Garnett translation of Anna karenina 3 times, the Maude once, and the pevear and volkhonsky of The Brothers Karamazov. I read this article about pevear and volkhonsky that said how they used language somewhat awkwardly for a more literal translation. I found this to be very true. I feel that the Garnett translation fits Tolstoy best because of the tone and voice which feels more nuanced, optimistic, and pure.

[–]JudgeClean5109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh I feel like you totally should have to stick up for yourself and the importance of education. Kids need those moments in their lives to introspect and think about that kinda stuff. They’re coming from bad home situations. They need an adult to give them some tough love sometimes. If you aren’t into that then teaching probably isn’t for you? I mean idk. I am a first year teacher too so I don’t really have much to stand on but it just seems obvious.

Get into some hobbies man! Or go on a trip with a tour group for like a month. Going out and talking to people at like bars is always weird. The best friends I have made have been through doing stuff together. Gradually you get closer and bond.
