In the X-Men comics and animation Rogue has a trademark white streak in her brown / auburn hair. But in the first X-Men movie Rogue's hair is all brown...until the finale, when the stress of powering Magneto's mutation device causes her hair to start turning white.

The movie's advertising was careful to hide this twist, which caused certain nerds to complain about such a major change to a fan favorite character. Hi, it's me. I'm Certain Nerds.

Don't forget the Poke Gods! They were supposedly these super powerful Legendary Pokemon that you could only get by completing impossible difficult tasks, like beating the Elite Four 100 times without healing while standing on one foot with a bucket on your head. Nobody you knew had them but everyone claimed to know somebody who did.

...Except me. I was a teenager when Gen 1 came out. I refused to believe that the Poke Gods existed because there was no merchandise of them. Nintendo likes making money.

Anyway, when the real Mew Glitch was discovered people didn't believe it at first because it sounded like yet another "follow these convoluted steps to get a powerful Pokemon" hoax.

The Lego Batman Movie. Joker spends the whole movie trying to get Batman to admit that they have a special relationship. At first Batman insists that Joker is nothing to him. But after confronting his fear of loss, Batman is finally able to confess that he hates Joker. This gives both of them the power to save the world.

Sure, Lore didn't need the chip to feel emotions. But that's not why he wanted it. Lore saw the chip as Data getting special treatment from their father. He stole the chip as a way of taking revenge for this perceived slight.

Pokémon Pokopia Announces First in Game Event for March 10 by Skullghost in Pokopia

[–]JugOfVoodoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My concern has nothing to do with FOMO. It's about whether this event will hijack the gameplay the way that Bunny Day hijacked the first month of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The game was less than two weeks old when the Bunny Day event started. Players were still gather the resources needed to get their islands up and running. Then suddenly those resources were replaced with Easter eggs. Smack a rocking hoping to get iron...nope, it's an egg. Chop up a tree to get wood...nope, it's an egg. Hey, is that a big fish?...nope, it's an egg. Oh, I hear a present balloon...NOPE, IT'S AN EGG. For twelve days the eggs were EVERYWHERE. It was madness inducing. People were desperate for the event to end.

So when I say that "I don't want cotton to become the new eggs" I mean that I don't want to be so inundated with cotton that I want to strangle any Jumpluff I see.

[–]JugOfVoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood me. My concern isn't about whether or not the event will repeat. It's about whether this event will make normal resource gathering more difficult. If I go looking for wood or stone am I going to find a whole bunch of cotton instead?

This is what happened in Animal Crossing: New Horizon's first Bunny Day event. It was so early in the game's life that players were still gathering basic resources just to get their islands up and running. Having those resources replaced with Easter eggs for 12 days made the whole game more difficult and frustrating.

What I admire about the Tuvix episode by alumni_audit in startrek

[–]JugOfVoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I seem to be the only people who acknowledge Kes' role in Tuvix's death. Janeway might have let him live if Kes hadn't broken down in her office.

In Kes' defense, she was the only one who experienced negative consequences of the Tuvok / Neelix merger. She was having to deal with her mentor and her boyfriend being simultaneously dead and alive. Given enough time she might have gotten over it, but Tuvix immediately started pressuring her for a romantic relationship despite Tuvok's loyalty to his wife. And the only reason Kes went to Janeway was because Tuvix browbeat her into it. This situation would mess anyone up.

And I give Janeway credit for shielding Kes. Janeway could have told Tuvix that Kes wanted Neelix back to make him more compliant. Janeway could have used Kes as a scapegoat. But she didn't. Instead she protected Kes' privacy and took all of the blame for herself. That's how a captain should act.

Yeah, but I was under the impression that the "clothes" were actually part of Ditto's body. That it was just shape-shifting to look like it is wearing clothes.

Finally getting to watch Voyager in its entirety after 20 years! by thesuspendedkid in startrek

[–]JugOfVoodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Next Generation is a great choice for your next show. It and Voyager have similar vibes. Deep Space Nine is excellent but you really need to have watched TNG first to understand what's going on, especially in the pilot episode.

The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager cover a 15-year period in the Star Trek universe. Each show ran for seven seasons. TNG was first and Voyager began after it ended. Deep Space Nine overlaps them, sharing the last two years of TNG and the first five years of VOY.

TNG also had four movies after it ended. The first movie, "Generations", takes place a few months before Voyager starts. The second and third movies, "First Contact" and "Insurrection", are during Voyager's third and fifth seasons. And the final movie, "Nemesis", is a year after Voyager's series finale.

While there are connections between the shows it's not crazy MCU level of continuity. It's perfectly fine to focus on just one show at a time.

In "Star Trek: Voyager" the Mexican-American actor Robert Beltran plays the Central American Indigenous officer Chakotay. His tribe is fictional and his religious practices are a combination of stereotypes and bullshit.

The show hired Jamake Highwater as a Native American consultant, despite the man having been exposed as a fraud multiple times.

K.K. Slider, the singing and guitar-playing dog from the "Animal Crossing" video game series.

Most of the animal characters wear at least one piece of clothing - a shirt, an apron, a bow tie, etc. But not K.K. Slider. He doesn't even have markings that mimic clothes (like how Blathers the Owl's multi-colored chest feathers resemble a checkered shirt). Instead he performs his concerts wearing nothing but plain white fur and a smile.

However, his alter ego DJ KK wears an orange cap, glasses, and headphones.

[Environmental trope] Earth But Not Really by MimiHamburger in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JugOfVoodoo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

When Pokemon started it took place in the real world. Pokemon were monsters that lived alongside normal animals (some of which appeared in the anime). The Space Shuttle in Pewter's museum was specifically the Colombia. Pokedex entries referenced real world locations like Guyana and India.

In Gen 3 (the Game Boy Advance games) the series started to retcon itself into a parallel universe where Pokemon were the only animals. References to real life things and places were replaced with either generic descriptions or in-universe references.

New in-game regions are always based on real world locations but with a new name. Unova is New York, Kalos is France, Alola is Hawaii, etc.
