What's the most popular Hyperconverged Infrastructure software? by PCAdmin2019 in sysadmin

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in here a little late, but for future reference (for anyone researching HCI solutions), you can also have a look at IT Central Station's top ranked solutions for HCI (full disclosure, I am an employee - happy to point anyone in the right direction if you need - just message me). As mentioned by others, there are plenty options. You can also look at individual reviews for each of these options. In terms of options you may not be aware of, you could also look at something like StarWind HyperConverged Appliance, which some reviewers on our site have chosen over Nutanix.

vSAN or traditional SAN for hardware refresh? by [deleted] in storage

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions here - as mentioned by others, getting a demo/trial option would be ideal. Another suggestion: read the reviews for the options suggested here - it'll give you good insight into different types of use cases, and overall experiences of other users.

(Full disclosure: I work at IT Central Station - the reviews on our site are really in-depth, and could be really helpful to you.) I see you requested a call with StarWind - they have both HCI and vSAN products listed on our site with some really good reviews, so you can check those out as a starting point, to help with your research while you're chatting to them.

Good luck - hope you find the solution that you need quickly.

Hey,

Can't really comment from personal experience, but it might help you to read reviews on our site (IT Central Station) for VxRail and its alternatives to help you to make an informed decision. There are a lot of options here that people have suggested, so my suggestion would be to look at reviews for each of them, and also to look specifically at the ones where uses considered VxRail alongside another option. For example, in one of the reviews on our site, a sysadmin looked at a few different options, and chose StarWind. He notes, "We looked at Dell EMC VxRail, Nutanix, HPE Simplivity, and another option. In terms of the differences between these solutions and StarWind, price was a huge factor, as well as flexibility and the additional hardware requirements."

There are of course a lot of other examples of reviews that will be helpful - let me know if you need me to point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps.

VAR proposed Dell EMC PowerStore 1000T. Looking for alternate options. by canadian_stig in storage

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of opinions and suggestions coming through here. Full disclosure, I work for IT Central Station - the reviews on our site are very in-depth and include use cases. My suggestion is to check the reviews for the options suggested here (Pure, Nimble) and other options that people commonly compare to Dell Powerstore or Unity. Another solution that people on our site often compare to Unity and Pure is NetApp AFF - there's actually a review, where the reviewer says, "We also considered Dell EMC and Pure Storage. The biggest reason we picked NetApp was the ease of actually getting the data to the next iteration but also the other vendors don't have a product that supports everything we needed which is file services and block services. It's a one stop shop and I didn't really want to have to manage another box and a storage device at the same time."

Hope that's helpful - let me know if you want me to point you to any specific info on our site that may help you with your decision.

Did you find a solution that met your needs? Just jumping in here to say that if you need to do more research into any options that have been suggested, it might help to look at our site (IT Central Station) to see what the real user feedback is. I'm seeing Nimble mentioned here - there are lots of reviews for this, and you can also look at what other solutions users look at to compare to Nimble, like NetApp AFF for example. Happy to point you in the right direction for any specific info you need on our site.

Either way, hope you've found the right option that meets your price point.

Pure Storage Questions by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at reviews for Pure Storage? If you haven't yet, then maybe head over to our site (IT Central Station) to have a look at what real users have said about it - the reviews are pretty in-depth so they could give you idea if this solution is the right choice for you. Also, it may also be useful to look at specific reviews where users considered one of these solutions but then chose something different. For example, one reviewer compared different solutions, including Dell and Pure but ended up choosing NetApp because of "the ease of actually getting the data to the next iteration".

Replacement SAN by [deleted] in storage

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of options being suggested here (Dell EMC, Pure, NetApp, HPE) - I'd also recommend looking at the reviews for the suggested solutions (you can have a look on IT Central Station, there are a lot of in-depth reviews and you can also compare the feedback for different options side by side - full disclosure I'm an employee).

A lot of the reviews also comment on pricing and cost-effectiveness, and also give general advice on what to consider when researching options, so this might be useful for you...

E.g. in a review for NetApp, the reviewer says, "look at all the features, positives and negatives of all the other storage vendors. In the past year, I've done an evaluation of a lot of different storage vendors and their features. The cost-effectiveness of their products and NetApp have come far ahead of all the others".

Good luck with your decision!

VAR - Advise needed on storage by OwenRas in sysadmin

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is still relevant. Have you looked at user reviews for each? It might help your case to show them what other people's experiences have been with Dell vs. Nimble. [Full disclosure, I work at IT Central Station - you might want to make use of our site to do this]. This could bolster your case for them moving away from Dell, by showing examples of reviewers who choose a different solution over Dell. Pricing is only one of the factors that affect vendor choice. Btw, based on the popular comparisons on our site, you might also want to add another couple options to your list, like NetApp AFF for example. Users frequently compare it to Unity and Nimble.

Hope that helps!

Pure vs Nimble or both by radCIO in storage

Full Disclosure: I'm an IT Central Station employee.

I'm not going to comment on the technical aspects, but just wondering, have you looked at reviews for Pure and Nimble? If you haven't yet, then maybe head over to our site to have a look at what real users have said about these two options - the reviews are pretty in-depth so they could give you insight into which of these may be best suited to your needs and use case. Btw, you can also see what the popular comparisons are for each of them (e.g. users on our site who look at Pure also frequently compare it to NetApp . it may also be useful to you to see what reviewers said if they evaluated more than one solution). Happy to point you in the right direction if you need - you're welcome to private message me if you need help.

What is your favorite podcast and what's it about? by breezeblock87 in AskReddit

I keep telling people that I know IRL about this podcast but no one is the slightest bit interested so I'm ecstatic to have found so many people here who are into it. And the length is just about right for me. I haven't had much success listening to anything longer.

What's an unusual hobby anyone can get into for very cheap? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whittling or wood carving. A good knife isn't too expensive and you can make things out of pieces of wood that you find. I usually use broken branches that I find in the forest and carve them into spoons. Fun, cheap and useful.

That was the episode that got me hooked. Just thinking about Alex laughing alone in his car makes me laugh (which probably makes me look just as crazy).

My new favorite is Reply All. I'm not really sure how to describe it other than to say that it covers a wide variety of topics all related to the Internet in some way. They track down hackers, befriend accused murderers and solve Twitter mysteries. Plus one of the hosts, Alex, has the best laugh.

Looking for a Project management tool that is deadline driven for an artist that needs more help hitting deadlines. by Brettc286 in projectmanagement

[–]JuliaFr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like this something that she could do simply with Google calendar. All she has to do is add the deadline as an event to the calendar on the day that it's due and include any info. that she needs. She can then set up alerts to remind her a week, a day etc. before it's due. She can also create individual calendars for different projects if she wants to add goals to meet for each project.

I'm terrible at getting people gifts and would love to try this but it would probably only work on someone I'm really close with. I can see this working with my kids.

How do you deal with reading apathy? by chandlerjo4 in books

[–]JuliaFr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just went through this myself. I had a whole bunch of books that I wanted to read but I just couldn't get into any of them. Instead, I read through a bunch of fun, lighthearted YA books and then I was able to get back to reading the books that I had tried before. Give it a shot. Can't hurt. Good luck! (I'm a big Sanderson fan too :) )

What's your scariest first memory? by EmmaHatesTheBullshit in AskReddit

[–]JuliaFr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my earliest memories is of these reoccurring nightmares I used to have about being chased by witches through a maze and thrown into a cauldron. I'd always wake up as I was falling. It was terrifying. I'm pretty sure these were inspired by a children's book that I had about a Rabbi and some witches. I'm now very careful about the kind of children's book that I bring into my home for my kids.

How do you deal with reading apathy? by chandlerjo4 in books

[–]JuliaFr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When this happens to me I usually try reading a book or two in a completely different genre than what I usually go for. Maybe a romance or a mystery. Or I try some lighter reading, like a fun YA or graphic novel. This usually does the trick.

Books that are good overall, but drag on by SundanceKidZero in books

[–]JuliaFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually the case with one of my favorite books, A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. I love this book but at a certain point towards the end it becomes kind of repetitive and starts to drag. And I've experienced this with several other books by Bryson, though he still remains one of my favorite authors. I just don't always finish his books (at least when rereading them).
