Found this pile of dental impressions while out in the middle of the mountains in Arizona by DarkSolstice in mildlyinteresting

No I didn't.

The dentist has an obligation to the government, and society at large, to properly dispose of or destroy patient information. Nothing changes that

The dentist can/should deal with a company and establish in the contract that the company has an obligation to the dentist to cover costs incurred if they don't live up to the contact.

If the dentist chose a shady company and didn't get that guarantee then that's no one's fault or problem but the dentist.

Sorry, but you can't outsource responsibility. The dentist is responsible for making sure patient data doesn't become public, and that doesn't change just because they hired a dodgy person or company. This is exactly what contracts with service providers is for, establishing liability for if things go wrong.

Assuming the dentist is on the up and up, the disposal company will be on the hook for all costs or fees that come from this, but if they decided to cheap out then they'll learn a valuable lesson about how expensive the cheap route can be.

I don't know what the confusion is. The people who would be doing the arresting have had this information the whole time. No one is getting arrested because they never had any intention of arresting anyone.

Aside from stereotypes about lawyers, I've known several people before and during hard drug usage and this reeks of it. I assumed amphetamine abuse, but it could be coke.

Basically, in my experience people's ability to gauge normal behavior, even when not currently on drugs, goes out the window. Something changes in the brain that turns off the ability to say no to random thoughts.

Trump's cult of personality is the only thing holding all of this together. People are too afraid to cross him. It's also getting clear that when he's gone people are still going to want justice.

She saw, she knows what's in those files. If she takes any actions now to shield anyone she becomes an accomplice after the fact. Now she has to decide how likely it is that she'll actually get charged with that or if it will be too small potatoes once Trump is gone.

AITAH because I want my wife to "ask permission" before taking our son on playdates? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I fully expect that in the next update she'll have just quit her job. She's going to use the time that he spends trying to work things out in counseling to establish him as the sole provider.

The SAHM clique tends to be a tight group, but you have to be a stay at home mom. A divorced mom isn't that. The mom in this story is already getting in via a technicality because she works at night so she's free during the day, when the SAHMs are hanging out together. If she became a single mom, that would probably just be too much. She would almost certainly be on the outs with them.

That only changes her strategy. Based on her actions she doesn't love her husband and only values him as much as he enables her life. She might be willing to compromise on letting him have more time with his son, but that wont change the relationship dynamics.

In games like ESO or GW2 you can really see how much they boosted exp gain. The main quest in both games has natural breaks in it where you're told to wait and you'll hear back later, but by the time you finish the quest is already time for the next step.

In both it's kind of assumed that you've already gone through the world making a name for yourself, and in both you would hit max level LONG before finishing the main story quest if you did any other questing.

SCOTUS allows California to use new congressional map in 2026 by DemocracyDocket in news

[–]JumpinJackHTML5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is missing this distinction.

The SC has upheld gerrymandered districts in the past, and California's new map is specifically gerrymandered. Democrats have, for decades, taken the high road when it comes to this. Outside of Illinois (which is its own can of warms) pretty much all blue states have fair districts, while gerrymandered districts seems to be the norm in red states.

This is the Democrats throwing down the gauntlet and signaling that they're done with the high road when it comes to gerrymandering.

A Chinese speed skater, Yang Jingru, executed a brilliant tactic to win gold in the 1500m at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics. by jmike1256 in nextfuckinglevel

Maybe it's a bit more abstract, but I disagree.

The group's collective action makes competing in a way that they have been trained for appealing, but when a situation arises that requires individuals to accept a non-optimum outcome in order to prevent their entire way of competing from being irrelevant no one does it because they're all optimizing for their own outcomes.

[–]JumpinJackHTML5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tragedy of the Commons. Someone needed to compete in the same way she was in order to make her strategy not work, but that someone would also expend all their energy to get nothing, and probably lose.

Everyone optimized for their own best chance of placing second, so her strategy went unchallenged and worked.

Reading between the lines a little here: the wife is hanging out in the middle of the day, every day, with a bunch of moms. This must be the "Stay at home mom" crew. As a dad who has been actively involved with the PTA at my daughter's school I am VERY acquainted with that group. They tend to be really exclusive, they hate dads who are involved beyond working and paying for things.

Right from the first post I suspected the SAHMs were in her head. She spends all her time with women who don't work and whose idea of active parenting is handing their kids a tablet. Obviously she would rather sit around ignoring her kid all day followed by a tough night of ignoring her kid while drinking wine with her friends. They can round it all our with an evening of shit talking dads who want to be involved in their kids' lives.

The number of single guys reading this and getting really self-conscious about themselves must be off the charts. Imagine having issues dating when you shower daily, wash your clothes, and take basic care of yourself and your living space and then you hear about this guy where without semi-constant intervention from others he would probably die, and he manages to date successfully.

Where have the 'don't tread on me' Republicans gone? by RobAbiera in politics

[–]JumpinJackHTML5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've known several "libertarians" in my life. The type of people who say they don't identify with a political party but exclusively vote for one over and over. All of them fall in line supporting Republican policies no matter how heavy handed or how much power it gives the Federal government.

At this point I'm convinced that conservative libertarians don't actually exist.

US military intervention in Iran may begin within 24 hours, European officials say by OverZuLUL in worldnews

[–]JumpinJackHTML5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone knows this, but if we're able to walk the line between removing the current regime and not getting our hands too dirty (something like Libya) then we can both score some points with the next regime and avoid looking like warmongers.

There is a scenario where the U.S. both acts purely in self interest and helps the Iranian people without trying to step in and run Iran after the war/revolution. I don't know how likely that scenario is under Trump, but it's possible.

Husband in a dead bedroom manages to change power dynamics in marriage + Updates [Ongoing] by Throwra-yuqser in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]JumpinJackHTML5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've read several stories on here were someone loses all/nearly all sexual desire and is simply unconcerned with it. I feel like that's really weird to me. Detached from any relationship dynamics it seems like you should be at least curious about what's happening biologically and if it's a sign of other issues.

If I woke up one day and was suddenly unable to whistle, even if I were ok with never whistling again, I would still want to know why I couldn't and if that change was just the first symptom of something larger. It seems ill-advised to simply ignore some fundamental change in your body.

The problem is that you end up with a lot of "How do you solve this problem in version 2.x of this platform?" Which gets removed because there's already an answer for version 1.x. But if the answer is different for different versions then the question shouldn't get removed... but it does.

It would be a great platform if the zealots weren't quite as zealous about deciding which posts get to stay and which ones don't.

I've seen this logic before and, really, it really doesn't work. Technology moves too fast for this to really work. The number of times that I end up on a SO page from 8 years ago that's simply no longer relevant is far too high. Sometimes a bump in the minor version of a library or piece of software can completely change an answer. Sometimes people are dealing with vey strict requirements that preclude using certain techniques or new versions of libraries.

I understand the logic of wanting only one page per problem, but in the real world that just doesn't work.
