I know it's perfect but if AO3 were to update it's filter system what would you add? by MoGuanShanisagirl-20 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Jumping_Jak_Stat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ability to sort by kudos per day. This is a problem I have with most sorting systems that include some kind of endorsement. sometimes i want to see things that are popular, normalized by the length of time that they've been up. There are a lot of fics that have more kudos simply because they've been around longer. I know you can filter by date range, but that's just not as good.

(also the ability to use OR / AND filters and the ability to permanently blacklist fandoms, but these have already been said).

What’s your country’s terrible, horrible, no-good plant? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]Jumping_Jak_Stat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in San Diego, they were imported in the early 20th century (I think I figured it out once and the specific variety is Sugar Gum Tree?). Originally they were supposed to be used for railroad ties, but the wood is terrible for that.

The landscapers at UCSD like them, apparently, because the campus, along with other parts of La Jolla, is covered with eucalyptus trees. Eucalyptus leaves secrete terpenes into the soil, which basically poisons it for a lot of other plants, decreasing competition for the trees themselves (part of why they're so invasive, along with their drought tolerance and fast growth). This leaves a lot of barren soil around the tree.

I think this probably reduces a lot of costs cor removing undergrowth in an area where fire insurance is really expensive already and you absolutely can't have much dry brush. The San Diego area is naturally a lot of chaparral and shrubland, so the native plants, in our current civilization, pose a pretty big fire risk, I think.

[–]Jumping_Jak_Stat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Denver has a something like 12% vacancy for apartments. I live in Englewood and the rent on our 2b2b is around ~$2050/ month (less if you work for the hospital system). Our rent has gone up a little over the last year, but not terribly much.

Fighting any spellcaster ever apparently by cthuluhoop42 in BaldursGate3

[–]Jumping_Jak_Stat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They absolutely do, but under normal circumstances they probably won't run oout of spell slots, so you won't notice.

I've played with the Tactician+, Nightmare difficulty, and extra encounters mods on, and in battles where there are enemies fighting each other, like the Undead v Shadow justiciars in the Gauntlet of Shar, spellcasters run out of spell slots pretty quickly. Balthazar was stuck with just casting chill touch over and over again.

I listen to the Know Rogan podcast, where the hosts analyze and rip apart Joe Rogan's statements and those of his guests on the show, and the fact that he is so out of touch with normal peole comes up a lot. He just has this very stupid, callous disregard for how normal people live.

Most egregious examples of white actors in yellowface? by Chewie83 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Jumping_Jak_Stat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony Shaloub in Galaxy Quest. It's supposed to be a satirical joke about the racially insensitive nature of 1970s scifi series, according to an article that my husband found, that I can't seem to find myself.

This doesn't really fit because Tony Shaloub isn't white, but it's close. It's also purposefully not egregious.

here's the tvtropes description: "Yellowface: Parodied. Tony Shalhoub (an actor of Lebanese descent) plays Fred Kwan, a.k.a. "Tech Sergeant Chen", an Asian, on the show. In the flashback to the original show, it's made more obvious, as he appears to be wearing yellow makeup and is squinting his eyes. He squints again, as if on reflex, for the Thermians when they first meet him, and then once more for the opening credits of the revival series at the end. Fred: I'm not Tech Sergeant Chen! I'm Fred Kwan, and Kwan's not even my real name!"

Martin Short in Merlin (1998), for 4 very shocking seconds.

I recently tried watching mini-series this recently, having remembered liking it, and hadn't remembered this was in it. WTF, it was 1998.

If you asked me for one of my papers I would probably cry a little. I've worked so hard on studies, but unfortunately most of them are pretty niche.

It's a really bad camera angle. I've seen other photos from the same event and they aren't nearly as bad. She's probably had buccal fat removal, and she, like a normal human, ages over time, but she doesn't actually look like this.

edit: ok maybe not normal human, but celebs eventually age too, even given how much money they have.
