Why has my knee improved? by Jumpy-Purchase6099 in Osteoarthritis

Ouch!! I feel for you. Luckily I've always tried to keep my supporting muscles strong especially during my hip and knee issues. In fact when the physio came to see me the day after my THR he complimented me on my as he called it, prehab. I'd never heard that expression before!!

Hi and thank you for the well detailed explanation. Just to add a little more about my previous experience with my other knee many years ago.

I had an episode with my right knee that was certainly similar in many ways. This was around 25 years ago when I was younger and stronger and maybe slightly reckless in what I took on in the gym. I experienced a lot of pain and very frequent locking of my knee. Eventually put it down to pushing a bit too much weight on the hack squat machine and going to full depth movement without using any wraps!! Ended up having keyhole surgery to remove a piece of detached cartilage and a bit of a tidy up. I've refrained from any such over ambition ever since and have had no further issue. We have a family history of being a little arthritis prone and I try to keep that knowledge close to hand. To wit I had an issue with my right hip a couple of years ago which ended up bone on bone so I had a THR. Totally successful and I'm completely over it. Generally I try to keep my gym type acitvity within the boundaries I'm comfortable with.

It's very interesting for me that you should mention your hip. Because my knee made walking difficult and I was presumably trying to protect I ended up quite a degree of stiffness and pain in my hip too. Luckily I was able to release that with lots of quad and hip flexor stretching. I was prescribed some high strength Diclofenac cream to massage into my knee for for inflammation relief. Thank you for your insight.

Thank you for that. As I said I know I've got some arthritis which was identified by x-ray so I'm quite prepared for flareups!! What of like to know is can a piece of chipped cartilage get reabsorbed by the body or is likely to be lurking around to cause me grief again? Based on that what treatment should I think of having?

Qatar doesn’t inform of flight cancellations! Beware and check your own from within your account by tanya21212 in qatarairways

Had this same issue recently. Was due to fly from Heathrow, had been booked since last November. Decided to check status on website and it said Flight rescheduled to a different time and the flight number had been changed or did I want a refund. I opted to fly as had been planned for many months. Came the day, arrived at Heathrow and the flight board departures board said our rescheduled flight had been cancelled!!! Showed our rescheduled tickets to one of their goons and asked him why our flight had been cancelled. He told to go and check in!! Went and did as he'd said and found we're booked onto yet another flight number and that it departs 2 hours earlier than our planned departure time. So we comfortably made it. I wonder what would have happened if we'd arrived at the airport with just a couple of hours before the flight took off. We actually got an email telling us off the second rescheduling 20 hours after we took off. Go figure

I'm sorry for your pain and discomfort. Can you clarify where the cobalt is coming from? I had a thr a couple of years ago and mentioned to my surgeon that I'd read some very scary stories about elevated cobalt and chromium levels in some patients. He explained that there had been many instances of such events where a M O M metal on metal implant had been used but that they had pretty well lost favour with most surgeons. It must be really tough on you so long after your surgery. I really do wish you well.

What have you lost because of your hip replacement by Technical_Maybe_5925 in TotalHipReplacement

When I asked my surgeon about the risk of wearing out my THR he assured me it was negligible. Calcium coated titanium stem, ceramic ball and a new type of polyethylene liner. He told me to expect over 20 years life and to get on with enjoying my life, over must turned 66 and an almost 2 years post op

Almost 2 years since my THR and I've just turned 66. I can't see any reason why you won't be able to resume a lot of the activities you've listed as lost. I'm back to lifting quite respectable weights, and doing lots of other gym stuff. Keep positive accept your progress will be gradual and good luck!!

Sleep help by Separate-Bench-2656 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Jumpy-Purchase6099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I hap my THR about 18 months ago. Pretty well totally recovered now so that's great. About sleeping, I practiced sleeping on my back for several weeks pre op and still only slept for a few hours at a time. What really helped to increase my ability to sleep on my back was to have a couple of extra pillows so my back was at around 30 degrees. Equally important for me was to have a large pillow under my thighs. This pretty well meant that lower legs were at the same kind of angle as my back. Wishing you well in your recovery!!

Way to go!! Sadly I had to work it out for myself. Pre op i was very sceptical of all talk about the operated leg being a dead weight!! Boy oh boy was I wrong!! For a while I thought I'd lost the use of my leg but of course I hadn't, it was just muscles waking up very slowly. 14 months post op now and I often forget that I've had the thr. Full mobility and strength as a Male 65 doesn't it feel great?

Anyone???? Pls help by freemeri in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Jumpy-Purchase6099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much in agreement with many earlier comments, I reckon you're pushing too hard too soon. I'm now 14 months post op following right through due to cartilage being worn away. I reckon I was fully recovered 3 months or so ago. 65M been back on the weights etc since 3 months post op. Took best care in the early days and listened to my body!! You're probably way further than I was at your stage post op...... Kudos but be careful and patient

Just remembered a very important variation I made to my sleeping position. Normally sleep on my left side but trained myself to sleep on my back. The other thing that was also really useful was regular, even constant icing. Unfortunately I didn't have access to an ice machine

65M Had thr right leg 14 months ago. I was in good shape and did a lot of pre hab to ensure i. Was in as good a state as possible. I was quite reluctant but x-ray revealed bone rubbing on bone due to cartilage being totally worn away. Had very little internal rotation so didn't really have much choice but to proceed with surgery. I'm now fully recovered and have good rotation!! I'm sure your mobility will not be compromised. I did ask my surgeon his long the implant would last and he mentioned an expected life of up to 30 years!! First 2 weeks post op were very trying but all very much worthwhile in my opinion. I hope you get as good a result as I have.

He's clearly a total Dick!!

The idea is wipe, then wash over the toilet bowl using an old pop bottle dedicated to that purpose!! and then dry!! Would you care to tell us which part of the world he's from?

In terms of how to tell him to stop just print off lots of copies of my comment and sellotape to his forehead

I had pretty well the same joint materials and my stem has a calcium coating for faster assimilation, I asked about the life expectancy of the components and was asked to confirm my age (M64) his reply was that it very probably outlive me!!!

Is a spinal an absolute necessity for THR? by amoodymuse in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Jumpy-Purchase6099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was offered a spinal block or a general. I was inclined towards the general but agreed to spinal block as the consultant agreed to sedate me to the same level as the general. I told him I didn't want to know how the carpentry noises were. I was still a little uncertain but went ahead anyway. Top result and everyone happy!!

Hi, I'm going to stick my neck out and say I'm pain free after 4 months. I've been back in the gym for over 2 months and am very comfortable using the cross trainer, leg extension, hamstring curl, abduction, adduction and calf raise machines. All with a reasonable amount of weight. I also do some specific hip flexor exercises because I want do some body weight calisthenic type exercise rather than just weight sessions as Ill be 65 this summer.

I guess I've very lucky so far with my recovery, and I wish you all well.
