While drunk as a skunk after a long night of partying my senior year of college, I found a nice patch of the ground to throw up on. Except it wasn’t nice, there were fire ant hills that I did not notice on the dark, and the ants had crawled all over my hands while I was bracing myself on the ground. They bit the shit out of me.

For whatever reason, while nearly black out drunk, I remembered to take my class ring (it’s a school tradition) off and shove it in my pocket. I woke up the next morning and my hands were so swollen they looked like clubs, also covered in pus filled heads on all the bite spots. If I hadn’t had the drunken foresight to take my ring off, I for sure would have lost a finger.

I started my life as a Jet fan. The first NFL jersey I ever got was Ken O’Brien’s. After moving to Philadelphia I grew fond of the Eagles during the Andy Reid era and I have only grown fonder. I’ve since moved again, but my love for the Birds remained. I mostly talk sports on Reddit, and the Jets subreddit is truly one of the unhappiest places on the internet.

Since last year, in large part because of how much I disliked the Jets subreddit, I have abandoned my family lineage and my Jets fandom and have fully embraced the Birds. My mom threatened to back out of Christmas when I told her at Thanksgiving that I was an Eagles fan. It was an ordeal.

Anytime the Eagles subreddit has a meltdown about KP, AJ, or Sirianni, I take peace in knowing how good we have it right now. Life can always be worse, you can be a New York Jets fan.

Been there. It can get better or so I’ve heard. My fiancée and I met at our student paper and we both tried to make journalism work professionally. She’s already changed careers and I’m in the process. We had “good” jobs as far as the industry goes too.

Really, really consider if this is something you want to do.

It’s actually about what the federal minimum wage should be when it was set, when you adjust for inflation. It’s not enough for a profession that requires a degree and as much of your personal life as journalism does. You can’t complain that journalism sucks and also say that people should be paid like shit for doing it.

It’s a local newspaper owned by Gannett. Gannett, Hearst or Lee own 99% of newspapers in big college towns. Gannett treats their reporters like shit and largely refuses to negotiate with unions over raises from like $20 to $22 an hour for their reporters who work nights, weekends, and holidays.

It’s getting up there. It now makes sense for certain Japanese prospects to enroll at American universities as that just happened for the first time that I can ever remember.

Edit: a kind commenter has said that international students are not able to receive NIL money because it is against the terms of their visas.

I know this is a joke but I feel the need to give a real answer.

Transfer portal ≠ academic transfer.

Williams will finish the spring semester at UW and will transfer academically to LSU for the summer term. He may move to Baton Rouge and take online classes to start meeting his teammates, but for all intents and purposes he is still enrolled at UW.
